SUBJECT: Earth and Life Science

Content The learners will be able to develop and demonstrate an understanding of the
Standards internal structure of the Earth.
Performance Conduct a survey to assess the possible geologic/ hydrometeorological
Standard hazards that your community may experience.
MELC Explain how the movement of plates leads to the formation of folds and faults.
(S11/12ES-Id-22)
SUBTASK 1. Identify the three types of plate movements from a short excerpt.
2. Demonstrate the three types of plate movement based on plate tectonics
theory and how it leads to the formation of folds and faults.
3. Recognize specific examples of landforms as outcomes of plate movement.

Review Let’s do Carolling!

The Teacher will let the students sing the Igneous Rock song in the tune of
JINGLE BELLS ROCK!
In singing the song please observe the elements of music. The rhythm, texture,
dynamics, pitch, form, and timbre.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rsmcift_mYM
1. What are the types of igneous rock
2. What are classification igneous rocks?
3. What are the different texture of Igneous Rock?
Motivation The teacher will play a video presentation.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11-nqHkZs-Q

1. What was news all about?

2. Where did earthquake happen?
3. How strong was earthquake?
4. What do you think is the reason why there is an earthquake?
5. What do you think is our topic for today?

OBJECTIVES:
1. Identify the three types of plate movements from a short excerpt.
2. Expound three types of plate movement based on plate tectonics theory
using an illustration.
3. Cite specific examples of land forms as outcomes of plate movement.

Activity Experiment time!

Oreos plate tectonics!
AIM: To demonstrate how tectonic plates shift and interact.
MATERIALS: 3x Oreo cookie per group

METHOD:
1. Label the layers of an Oreo cookie –lithosphere (crust), asthenosphere (mantle), core

2. Remove the crust (top Oreo cookie) –try to keep the filling intact. [Hint: twist the Oreo
cookie to remove it in one piece]
3. Break the crust into two even pieces.
Complete these sentence stems:
The two pieces of the crust represent… __________________________________
The gap between the two pieces is a … __________________________________
4.Work in groups. Demonstrate the following plate boundaries to your group, using your Oreo:

Analysis Guide Questions:

1. What are the three plate boundaries?
2. Differentiate the three plate boundaries?
3. What are different landforms that are made because of plate boundaries?
Abstraction Directions. Read and analyze the diagram below which will provide them an
information about Plate Boundaries.
What is the other term for transform plate Boundaries?
What happens in plate boundaries?
What landforms does transform plate boundaries form?
Where does San Andreas from located?

What happens in convergent boundaries?

From the diagram, what are types of convergent boundaries?
What landforms are made when oceanic crust and continental crust collide?
What are the landforms made if oceanic-oceanic crust converge?

How about continental to continental?

What happens in the divergent plate?

What are landforms made when two plates move apart?

Application
Landform in the Philippines made by the movement of the Plates
The Sierra Madre is the longest mountain range in the Philippines. Spanning
over 540 kilometers (340 mi), it runs from the province of Cagayan down to the
province of Quezon, forming a north–south direction on the eastern portion of
Luzon, the largest island of the archipelago. It is bordered by the Pacific Ocean
to the east, Cagayan Valley to the northwest, Central Luzon to the midwest, and
Calabarzon to the southwest
The mountain range was formed by the collision of the Philippines sea plate and
the Eurasian plate.

Mayon is the main landmark and highest point of the province of Albay and the
whole Bicol Region in the Philippines, rising 2,463 meters (8,081 ft) from the
shores of Albay Gulf about 10 kilometers (6.2 mi) away.[9][10] The volcano is
geographically shared by the eight cities and municipalities of Legazpi, Daraga,
Camalig, Guinobatan, Ligao, Tabaco, Malilipot, and Santo Domingo (clockwise
from Legazpi), which divide the cone like slices of a pie when viewing a map of
their political boundaries.
Mayon is the most active volcano in the Philippines, and its activity is regularly
monitored by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology
(PHIVOLCS) from their provincial headquarters on Ligñon Hill, about 12
kilometers (7.5 mi) from the summit.
It is a subduction-zone volcano, between Philippine Sea plate and Sunda plate.

Manila Trench
The Manila Trench was formed by the subduction of the Eurasian Plate
Underneath the Philippine Sea.
Generalizatio Directions. Complete the diagram below by filling in the blank boxes with
n the corresponding terms/phrases.

Evaluation Directions. Read and analyze each statement and choose the letter which
corresponds to the correct answer by shading the circle before each
number.
1. Movement plate boundaries results too many events or
land formations, which of the following is the reason of mountain formations.
a. Converging Plates b. Both A and B
c. Diverging Plates d. Neither A
2. A movement of two plates moving toward each other.
a. Convergent Plate Boundaries b. Divergent Plate Boundaries
c. transform Plate Boundaries d. None of the above
3. Which of the following diagrams shows the strike slip fault wherein San
Andreas Fault which is bounded by North American Plate and the Pacific Plate is
the best example?
a.
b.
c.
d.

4.Also known as strike slip or sliding boundaries

a. Convergent Plate Boundaries b. Divergent Plate Boundaries
c. transform Plate Boundaries d. None of the above
5. How does Mayon Volcano formed?
a. Due to the collision of the Philippines sea plate and the Eurasian plate.
b. Due to the collision between Philippine sea plate and Sunda plate.
c. Was formed by the subduction of the Eurasian Plate Underneath the
Philippine Sea.
d. it is formed when the north American plates moves away to south American
plate.

Assignment A. Directions. Conduct a short interview with one or two of your family
members. Ask them about how they think the mountain, ridges and
volcanoes are formed. List all their responses. Afterwards, inform them on
how those formations formed based on what you have learned from the
lesson.
