BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE
May believe that the fashion industry and women’s magazines construct
a negative body image for women. The standard of beauty around the world
tends to lean toward fair skin, western features, and thin bodies. This has
resulted in women opting for skin whitening, plastic surgery, and damaging
eating disorders, such as anorexia and bulimia. (Give the meaning of the

Although there are products that try to promote a positive body image
celebrating differences in body types, skin colors, and features, these are in the
minority compared to those that feature the is has become opposite in
commercials, magazines, fashion shows, and the media. In this modern age,
this has become the case for men as well.
The excerpt you are about to read comes from the play The Good Body,
which is a series of monologues performed by different women. In this part, we
hear what the protagonist, Eve, has to say about her body.

CONCEPT NOTES
Body shaming is prevalent in the Philippines. Many overweight children
are affected by it, and this should be a good way to talk about it in class ---
how
people are bullied and looked down on because of their weight. There is also
the opposite --- of how certain people only believe that they will be beautiful if
they are rail thin, and this often results to anorexia or bulimia. Why do

Filipinos shame each other so much, when it comes to the body? For relatives,
the first thing that pops in their heads as a greeting is often a comment on
one’s weight, as if they were constantly weighing people in their heads. This
might be a good time to discuss this topic, and for students to know how it
feels, for those who have been bullied or insulted because of their weight.
