PART B – MICRO – PROJECT PROPOSAL

“Choose any product and study it's supply chain”

Supply chain management (SCM) is the discipline that manages the flow of supplies through
all of the stages of a production cycle. SCM applies to any organization that executes
projects, produces goods or provides services, as those activities require a supply chain to
maintain a steady flow of resources.Supply chain management is very important in the
business administration field because it affects other key business areas such as operations
management, inventory control and quality management. But what really makes SCM so
important is that it can also become an important competitive advantage for businesses.
The main goal of supply chain management is to make the most of the resources involved in
a supply chain and be as productive as possible. People are managed and supplies require
management as well. Whether those supplies are goods or services, they must be accounted
for and carried through from start to finish with deliberate control.
Concurrent with the development of lean approaches in construction, there has been
increasing interest and research in supply chain management as a field of study and
application. Supply chain management focuses on understanding and improving the
coordination of multiple firms that compose a supply chain. The explicit identification of
firms separates supply chain management from approaches that focus more narrowly on
production processes.

 Manufacturing process of AAC blocks :-

Anurag Wahane -
AAC blocks are light weight Aerated Autoclave Concrete Block.
It is manufactured through a reaction of aluminium powder and a proportionate blend of
lime, cement, and fly ash or sand. Autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) is a lightweight
cellular concrete that has been used for more than 80 years. Currently, however, no good
recycling options for AAC from construction and waste exist. During this process, the
hydrogen gas escapes create lots(billions) of tiny air cells, applying AAC with a strong
cellular structure. The hydrogen gas or bubbles cause the concrete to expand to roughly
thricetimes its original volume, further strengthened by high pressure steam curing. The
product thus formed is not only light weight concrete but also has higher compressive
strength. AAC is a masonry material that is lightweight, easy to construct, and
economical to transport. AAC is one of the materials which can cope up with the shortage of
building raw materials and can produce a light weight, energy efficient and
environmentally friendly concrete. This study deals with the manufacturing process of
the autoclaved aerated concrete blocks.
 Materials, Production, Properties and Application of Aerated Lightweight Concrete

Infra.Market has launched its Grade 1 AAC block plants at Talegaon in Pune and
Shirala in Sangli. The plants will use international manufacturing equipment to produce
AAC blocks, which have become one of the industry’s most sustainable and economical
building materials. The AAC block plants are located to make them easily accessible to the
city centres and the surrounding areas of Pune, Kolhapur, Satara, Sangli and Konkan region.
8
The manufacturing capacity of the Talegaon and Shirala plants is 20,000 cbm and 11000
cbm per month, respectively.
Aaditya Sharda, co-founder of Infra.Market, said, “The launch marks a significant
milestone for us, as we are committed and confident that our efficient supply chain
management and operations will ensure that our customers receive superior quality
materials on time. In the foreseeable future, we hope to expand our operations to serve more
cities in India.”

AAC BLOCK :

 Currently, however, no good recycling options for AAC from construction and waste
exist. During this process, the hydrogen gas escapes create lots(billions) of tiny air
cells, applying AAC with a strong cellular structure. The hydrogen gas or bubbles
cause the concrete to expand to roughly thricetimes its original volume, further
strengthened by high pressure steam curing. The product thus formed is not only light
weight concrete but also has higher compressive strength. AAC is a masonry material
that is lightweight, easy to construct, and economical to transport. AAC is one of the
materials which can cope up with the shortage of building raw materials and can
produce a light weight, energy efficient and environmentally friendly concrete.

 Manufacturing process :
1. Raw material preparation –

The key ingredient to manufacture AAC blocks is fly ash or pond ash. Fly ash is mixed with
water to form fly ash slurry. Slurry thus formed is mixed with other ingredients like lime
powder, cement, gypsum and aluminium powder in quantities consistent with the recipe.

2. Dosing and mixing :

9
A dosing and mixing unit is used to form the correct mix to produce Autoclaved Aerated
Concrete (AAC) blocks. Fly ash/sand slurry is pumped into a separate container. Once the
desired weight is poured in, pumping is stopped. Similarly lime powder, cement and gypsum
are poured into individual containers using screw conveyors. Once required amount of each
ingredient is filled into their individual containers control system releases all ingredients into
mixing drum.
3. Casting, Rinsing and Pre-curing –
After thorough mixing, slurry containing fly ash (or sand), lime powder, cement, gypsum and
aluminium is poured in moulds. Moulds can be of various sizes depending upon installed
capacity. Before casting, moulds are coated with a thin layer of oil. This is done in order to
ensure that green-cake does not stick to moulds.

4. Demoulding and cutting –

Demoulding and cutting are very critical processes in AAC blocks manufacturing. These two
processes play a major role in defining amount of rejection as well as dimensional accuracy
of the final product. Once a mould is out of pre-curing room, it is lifted by a crane or rolled
on tracks for demoulding operation. Two types of cutting are carried out: horizontal and
vertical cutting.
Entering autoclave -

10
The cut blocks then enter the autoclave and the semi-finished products are handed over to the
trolley. In the autoclave, hardening takes place. Once it hardens, it leaves the autoclave. After
which, hanging and stacking of finished products takes place.
6. Packing and loading -

Once the AAC blocks and panels are ready, they are packed with moisture-proof
material and loaded onto the truck or transport vehicle.

 Advantages of AAC Block for Your Business :

Construction cost-effectiveness.
AAC blocks are known to be accurate in size and shape, unlike traditional clay bricks. This
accuracy results in lower plaster usage, as well as lower costs. As a result, a thin layer of
plaster is sufficient to build a wall using AAC blocks. Additionally, plastering cost savings
can be approximately 35-40%.
-Low thermal conductivity and density.
Normally, the thermal conductivity of AAC block varies from 0.1 to 0.7 W/(m·K) for
density of 400–1700 kg/m3.
-Excellent acoustic shielding.
AAC blocks have superior sound insulation features to other building blocks of the same size
and thickness. The light and porous structure of these blocks provide strong soundproofing.
- Fire protection.
They offer the perfect combination of strength, fire resistance, durability, and elegance.
Because they are made of minerals, AAC blocks are non-combustible and can be used in any
kind of construction. In contrast to other construction materials, AAC blocks are fire-resistant
up to 1200℃.
- Permeability of vapor.
Thanks to its porous structure, aerated concrete has good vapor permeability. The vapor
permeability coefficient is between 0.23 and 0.4 mg/(m*h*Pa).The houses made of aerated
concrete “breathe”, and the microclimate inside is comfortable.
Environmental friendliness
Aerated concrete contains natural, environmentally clean ingredients. The material does not
release any harmful substances, does not age and is not prone to decompose. The background
radiation is 9 to 11 µR/h. For reference: Australian receive about 1.5 – 2.0 ‘millisieverts’ of
ionising radiation every year

per cubic metre. The final price of each block will totally depend on its size. Though
the price sounds high, do remember that these are large blocks, unlike traditional red
bricks.

8.0 Conclusion :
AAC block brings development through price lessening and to get better excellence
performance for the customer. This can be applied in the architectural, structural and material

12
components of the building. Conclusion says that AAC blocks are good for construction than
red clay bricks. Hence cost, quality, labor and time has been compared and suggestion from
this paper is to use AAC blocks for construction.
