stimulus substitution Classical conditioning “process in which a conditioned stimulus came to elicit a response after having been paired with an unconditional stimulus”. EXPERIMENT Before giving food to dog a bell was rung. The experiment continued for several days. After that the bell was rung, without any food the dog secreted saliva in the same measure as before. The response of salivation which was originally confined to the sight of the food (UCR) was now transferred to the sounding of bell (CR). The continued response is acquired by pairing CS and UCS repeatedly.

Before conditioning: food (UCS)

During conditioning: Bell+Food listening +salivation
(CS + UCS) (UCR)
After conditioning: Bell (CS) salivation(CR)
