OBJECTIVES OF THE VISIT

 Enhancing classroom learning: The very first objective of the industry visit was to enhance
the classroom learning. Till date I had learnt I lot regarding the companies and their work culture.
But purpose of this visit was to gain practical knowledge on industry practices, processes and
technologies.

 Product information and product management: A company might have several products
to offer. The utmost desire was to know about the products of Bengal Dairy and mainly how do
they manage all the products. Starting from production following up with marketing and
distribution.

 Exploration to professionalism: Attending meet with senior manager and several key
persons of the company was one of the great learnings. Observing their approach to several
circumstances and learning from their personal experiences.

 Technological Advancements: Explore the technology used and innovations implemented in


dairy production.

 Understanding other aspects of the industry: There are several safety majors, rules and
regulations and guidelines that are followed and maintained during the process, understanding
them and observing practically.

 Career opportunities: The other objective was to explore various career opportunities in
different career path within the industry. Understanding of job roles, responsibilities and
identification of areas of interest.

INTRODUCTION

An industrial visit to Bengal Dairy located at Dankuni, Kolkata, West Bengal was successfully organized

by Bengal Institute of Business Studies on 12.10.2023. The visit was to understand how the production

activity, management process, technology works and also to obtain knowledge and experience. The

process started with formal introduction and briefing of rules and regulations to be followed by visitors

inside the industry premises. The next step was introduction to the process of production of the dairy

products of Bengal Dairy. Further we were explained about composition of different elements present in

the product following with the technology used.

The Industrial Visit to Bengal Dairy Company enriched our knowledge and experience and provided a

great opportunity to learn practically through demonstration, interaction, exchange of information and fair

practices.

COMPANY PROFILE

Bengal Dairy is a private incorporated company of West Bengal, incorporated on 08.07.2016 under the

Companies Act, 2013. The main purposes are as follows:

(a) Develop the overall dairy sector of West Bengal by incentivizing the Dairy farming of rural

farmers.

(b) Ensuring procurement of surplus raw milk at a fair rate based on the quality of milk.

(c) Producing quality ensured milk and milk products at cheapest rate.

(d) Implementation of a hygienic supply chain of the milk from rural Bengal to the urban consumer.

Bengal Dairy Ltd. Was formerly known as Mother Dairy Calcutta. It was formed to serve the people of

the state of West Bengal with quality milk and milk products and in the process, help the farmers of rural

areas to produce milk products and find the market for their production for better returns.

Mr. Anirban Saha and Mr. Santanu Saha are the two directors of Bengal Dairy Ltd.

Bengal Dairy Milk Products Pvt Ltd is committed to sustainability and strives to minimize its impact on

the environment through its production processes and packaging materials. Bengal Dairy takes pride in

having a fully engaged workforce made up of motivational and highly skilled experts as well as focused

and industrious labourers.

KEY PRODUCT

The key products of Bengal Dairy are as follows:

 Milk – Various choices like Aayush (Toned Milk), Suswasthya (Loose Milk), Supreme

(Standardized Milk), Supravat (Tea Special Milk) etc are available in the market.

 Paneer – Paneer in various quantities like 100gm, 200gm, 1kg and 5kg are available at

reasonable rates.

 Probiotic Curd – Plain curd in different quantities like 200gm, 400gm or 1kg are readily

available.

 Ghee – HDPE Jar containing 100ml, 200ml or 500ml are sold at fair prices.

 Ice Creams- Choices like Vanilla Cup, Chocolate cone or Vanila cone tends to attract people

easily.

 Packaged Water – 500ml, 1ltr, 2ltr or up to 20ltr are equivalently sold.

ACTIVITITES OF THE COMPANY ON THE DAY OF VISIT

During the visit to the industry, we had several opportunities to experience a range of activities
that provides insights into the production process. The following were the majorly noticed
activities during the visit:
 Production Process:

The very first opportunity

was to observe the

production process of the

dairy products. From

mixing of the ingredients

and the packaging. How

the quality of the product is ensured through various checks and inspections.

 Product Sampling: We had the opportunity to sample some of the products produced by in the

factory. It includes different flavors of ice creams and other dairy products. It was a first-hand

experience to taste a product within the industry premises.

 Ingredient Mixing: The first step in the production of dairy products is to mix the ingredients

that makeup the dairy. This involves blending high lactose, caseins and caseinates, and milk

powder with purified water.

 Milk Preparation: Once the ingredients are mixed, they are combined with powder to create a

concentrated mixture. The mixture is then stored in tanks and transported to the packing facilities.

 Packing: The next step in the process is to fill the packets with the syrup mixture. This is

typically done by using a high-speed packet line that automatically fills and labels the packets.

The packets are then inspected for quality and finally packaged for distribution.

 Quality Control: To ensure that the product is one of the highest qualities. Bengal Dairy has

implemented strict quality control procedures. This includes routine inspections of the syrup,

packing process and packaged product as well as regular taste tests to ensure that the product is

consistent in taste and quality.

 Packaging: The packed bottles are then distributed in crates and prepared for shipment. This

involves stacking the crates on to the pallets, wrapping the pallets on to the trucks for distribution.

The process is carefully monitored to ensure that the product is protected during transport and

that it reaches the customer in the best possible condition.

 Factory Tours: Other than the production activities we were given chance to visit the over all

industry unit. This provided an insight in to the logistics of managing large scale production

operation and the challenges of meeting the demands of a global market.

 Employee Interaction: The opportunity to interact with factory employees who can provide

valuable insights into the production process, the company culture and their experiences working

for Bengal Dairy. These interactions were great for us to gain a deeper understanding of the

company, its operations and the people who help to make all these possible.

DESCRIPTIONS OF THE SESSIONS THAT WERE ORGANIZED BY THE COMPANY


FOR OUR VISIT

A one-day visit was organized by Bengal Institute of Business Studies on 12.10.2023 at the Bengal Dairy

Private Limited plant at Dankuni, Kolkata, West Bengal. The major focus was on learning and obtaining

knowledge from every possible way. An introductory session was conducted by the factory engineer of

Bengal Dairy who presented us with the company’s insight in a nutshell such as:

 An insight into the historical background of Bengal Dairy.

 Products offered like SM, TM, DM Milk, Curd, Misti Doi etc.

 Quality standards followed

 Mentioned every activity happening in the plant like washing of boilers, fillings, liquid

nitrogen, labelling, and packaging.

After the insightful session, we were taken to the Assembly Line and briefed about the processes and

operations undertaken by the plant. After visiting the unit, there was an Interaction Session of both

technical and non- technical questions related to the production process and company. The curiosity was

finally satisfied when a Q&A session was organized by the Senior Engineer.

ANALYSIS OF THE MARKETING FUNCTIONS OF THE COMPANY

Bengal Dairy has a robust marketing function that helps the company promote its products and build its

brand. Here are some of the key marketing functions performed by Bengal Dairy:

 Product Management and Development: Bengal Dairy continuously works on developing
new products and improve existing ones to meet changing consumer preferences. This includes
conducting market research, experimenting with new product formulations and launching new
products.
 Brand Building: Bengal Dairy has one of the most recognizable brands in the state and the
company places a strong emphasis on building and maintaining its brand. This includes
advertising, sponsorships and other marketing initiatives aimed at building brand awareness and
loyalty among consumers.
 Pricing: Bengal Dairy sets prices for its products based on a variety of factors including
promotion costs, competition and consumer demand. The company carefully balances its pricing
strategy with its marketing initiatives to ensure that it is competitive in the marketplace and is
able to reach its target customers.
 Distribution: Bengal Dairy has a highly sophisticated distribution network that helps the

consumer demand.

and maintaining relationships with its customers and it uses a variety of tactics to do so.

OVERALL LEARNING FROM THE VISIT

This visit to Bengal Dairy has provided with a wealth of information about the company and the beverage

industry. Some of the most important learnings from the industry visit are as follows:

 Hands on learning experience: Industry visit offered hands on learning experiences that helped to

apply knowledge and skills in real world settings.

 Knowledge about the company and beverage industry: The visit has provided a comprehensive

understanding of the dairy industry market trends, competition and future prospects. Along with

immense ideas and data related to Bengal Dairy.

 Understanding Operations and products: A tour to the industry has provided a of understandings

related to production process and various products of Bengal Dairy along with the technologies

used behind the production.

 Building professional connections: Industry visit has provided opportunities to meet with the

professionals and it will help to build relationship and bond for future opportunities.

 Improved Confidence: This visit to Bengal Dairy has increased the confidence by exposing to

new challenges and opportunities and helped to develop new skills. Overall, the visit has added

on to knowledge about insights and production and marketing.
