ROLE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN LEGAL DOCUMENTATION
INTRODUCTION
The functioning of law and artificial intelligence work on ideas that are unusually similar: they
both use precedents from the past to infer laws that will apply to new circumstances. Thus, it
should seem natural that law and artificial should complement each other and yet the legal field
has long avoided to embrace AI.

Even for historically low-tech industries like the legal profession, the demand for accurate
language prevents innovation and digitization. Legal documentation seems like it is not a good
candidate for AI integration since it needs precise terminology and structures to remove ambiguity
and diverse interpretations. In order to properly benefit from uses of AI, this language would need
to be updated.

This paper aims to understand the manner in which AI has been proposed to be integrated with
legal documentation and how it can possibly benefit the legal field by cost cutting, automation,
reducing scope for errors and enhancing precision. At the same time there are also concerns that
need to be addressed including data privacy, ethical implications, resistance to adopt AI and
liability concerns. It will also look at case studies where Artificial Intelligence has been
successfully adopted in legal contract management and legal filing processes.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
This project will adopt the armchair method of research with extensive analysis of pre-existing
data and literature such as articles, research papers and books would be referred while researching
the topic. The research conducted for the presentations would be mainly through the doctrinal
method.

RESEARCH QUESTION
Does integration of artificial intelligence in legal documentation process’s advantages outweigh
the potential harms?

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE
The main objective of this research is to find out the role that artificial intelligence can play in
enhancing the legal documentation process while comparing the overall benefits and harms that
the process might include.
HYPOTHESIS
Integration of Artificial Intelligence with legal documentation will provide more benefits to the
legal industry and outweigh the harms posed by the same.

LIMITATION
The scope of this project is limited to the role played by AI in the legal documentation process and
how it enhances the efficiency of access to legal justice. The focus is not on other methods of
integration of AI in the justice system such as the e-courts system, virtual assistants or chatbots.
The doctrinal method of research is employed for analysis and therefore no empirical data has been
collected for research purposes.

REVIEW OF LITERATURE

1. Artificial Intelligence in Legal System: An Overview (Jhanavi Gupta, 2021)

This study provides a framework for the role played by Artificial Intelligence in the legal world.
It explores the responsibility that can be imposed on AI. It also delves analyses of studies on
adoption of automated AI in contract management and how it has increased efficiency. It also
delves into the combination of AI with other legal areas like competition law, intellectual property
rights and labour laws.

2. Ethical Pitfalls When Lawyers Are Using Artificial Intelligence (H.K. Lidstone et. al.
2023)
The paper is a critical analysis of the ethical concerns raised when lawyers are using platforms like
ChatGPT to make contracts, undertake legal filings such as breach of confidentiality on sharing
facts of a case with ChatGPT and conflict of interest if the AI platform shows any form of bias. It
also gives suggestions on how to overcome these challenges including committing to a model rule
of conduct and ensuring technical and common knowledge competence in lawyers.

3. Online Legal Document Providers and the Public Interest: Using a Certification
Approach to Balance Access to Justice and Public Protection (S. Fortney 2019)
The study looks at how private governance may be more effective than government regulation or
and consequently analyses litigation brought against online providers of automated documentation
services. It further looks at steps taken by bar association to mitigate issues pertaining providers
of automated legal documents with an emphasis on best practices recommendations. It also studies
the benefits of private certification over government regulation. Lastly, it focuses on how a private
certification regime could both benefit online document providers and advance public protection.

CONCLUSION

In the rapid transition to a digital economy, it becomes crucial to embrace the change and the same
holds true for artificial intelligence in the world of legal documentation as well. There are several
benefits not limited to automation and enhanced precision through which AI can transform the
legal industry.

The legal industry is frequently seen as one of the most conservative in terms of digital
transformation. The laws already exist, and it is challenging to change the legal procedures that
support them since established experts in the field advocate for their preservation. The legal
sector's digital revolution should concentrate on areas, such as marketing, data management, and
client connections in order to improve efficiency. The purpose of the legal profession is to solve
problems and provide justice; AI is not a threat to that aim, but rather a means to that end.
