A Few words from

Grand Master Kwan Jang Nim Cariati

Instruction, let alone mastery, of any art form requires three main components. The first two are
straight forward, namely: diligent practice and a sincere dedication to learning. The third is the
acquiring of the correct technical knowledge which is always more tricky. Taekwon-Do has gone
through many changes since it was officially created on April 11, 1955, by General Choi Hong
Hi. Consequently, many original and authentic techniques have been modified due to innocent
misinterpretations of the original texts or a more willful disregard for tradition. The aim of these
books is to share with you General Choi’s legacy and build upon the fine work presented by General
Choi in the original encyclopedia. Every attempt has been made to stay true to the original text and
fully acknowledge the single authorship of Choi, Hong Hi. Where possible I have included: Sir’s
TIPS which are meant to augment, clarify and simplify understanding for the most precise execution
of techniques.

This is the first of nine handbooks whose focus is presenting the fundamental techniques of the
International Ch’ang-Hon Taekwon Do Federation from Saju Jirugi to Tong-Il. The objectives are three-
fold. Firstly, to break down in a step-by-step manner each tul (pattern) in a concise and
comprehensive way complete with illustrations/diagrams and pictures. Secondly, to standardize in
a definitive manner the execution of authentic and fundamental techniques as presented to me
personally by my instructor, General Choi, Hong Hi, the founder of Taekwon-Do. And lastly, to offer
insight and knowledge not found in ANY other encyclopedia based on observations, anecdotes and
real-life experiences culled from travelling the globe for many years as both personal assistant to
General Choi and as the ICTF President for the past 15 years.

I would personally like to thank the following individuals for their support throughout the years
and for being instrumental in making this book possible: General Choi Hong Hi, Master Sucre, Mr.
Adriano, Master Joseph Cariati, Master Angelo Cariati along the many others who are too numerous
to mention. Thanks to Ms. Emily Urbizo, photographer for the ICTF.

None of this could be achieved without the loving support of my wife who is affectionately known as
Mrs. C. and my entire family.

I dedicate this book to the entire ICTF global community.

Sincerely.

GM Kwan Jang Nim Cariati PhD

and both should be extended until they have

the same delivery distance. For a right low
block, hands at left chest side; for a left low
block, right chest side.
- The hands should be positioned back fist to
back fist, and blocking hand on top.

A right low block stops by the right low abdominal area; a left low block, by the left abdominal area.

When the low block has been completed, the fist should be at half facing.

For teaching purposes, the fist should be at a distance of 20 cm from the thigh.
The block, the landing and breath should be delivered at the same time.

Your body should be half facing when delivering a Walking Stance Low Block.

After delivering a low block, the technique should be on the chest line of your body.

6 TKD Fundamentals Book

KNIFE HAND LOW BLOCK
Sonkal Najunde Makgi
Purpose: It is used to block a low kick. To be
exact, you are blocking the inner or outer tibia
of your attacker’s foot.
Blocking Tool: the side part of the hand, from
the back of the pinky finger to the wrist.

Preparing to deliver a Knife Hand Low Block

- The hands should be crossing by the lower
rib cage, and both should be extended until
they have the same delivery distance. For
a right knife hand low block, hands at left
chest side; for a left knife hand low block,
right chest side.
- The hands should be positioned back fist to
back fist, and blocking hand on top.

The knife hand should stop in line with the shoulder joint line – right knife hand stops in line with
the right shoulder joint line, left knife hand with the left.

At the end of the movement, the knife hand should be half facing, and the distance from the thigh
should be 20 cm.

INNER FOREARM BLOCK

An Palmok Kaunde Makgi
Purpose: To block an attach to the middle
section.
Blocking Tool: The area is 4 fingers from the
wrist joint towards the back of the elbow.
Correct height of the inner forearm middle
side block: the fist is in line with the shoulder.

Preparing to deliver an Inner Forearm Block

- The hands should be crossing at the
opposite side of the block you are using –
for a right inner forearm block the hands
should cross from the left chest side; for a
left inner forearm block, from the right.
- The starting point is at chest level

Once the technique stops, the front of the fist is vertically in line with the 3rd toe, and horizontally is
in line with the shoulder joint line.

Level 1 7
KNIFE HAND GUARDING BLOCK
Sonkal Daebi Makgi
Purpose: To block an attack to the middle
section of the body.
Angle: Both hands should be 45 degrees or
half facing.
The tip of the knife hand should align vertically
with the front toe. The back hand should be
slightly touching the center of the solar plexus
area.
Preparing to deliver a knife hand guarding
block
- Hands should be slightly open (just release
the tension in the fist)
- Position of front hand: chest level and center
of the body (solar plexus area).
- Position of back hand: the back hand should be at eye level. The back hand should be 40 cm
measured from the head to the front of the fist.
- Body should be full facing in preparation for delivery.
When the knife hand guarding block is fully delivered the body should be half facing.

TWIN FOREARM GUARDING BLOCK

Sang Palmok Makgi
Blocking Tool: Both outer forearms. The area
10 cm away from the wrist joint going back
towards the elbow.
Angle: Both fists should be half facing or at
45 degrees.
Preparing to deliver a Twin Forearm Guarding
Block
- The hands should be crossing at chest level
and in the center of the body, with the arm
performing the high block on the outside
and the arm performing the side block on
the inside.
- The knuckles are facing outwards.
- If you are performing a right twin forearm
guarding block, the right hand is delivering the high block; if instead you are performing a left
twin forearm guarding block, the left hand delivers the high block.
Note: The front hand (side block) is the primary block and the high block is the secondary block.
When performing the high block in the twin forearm guarding block – or any high block for that
matter – the fist should be at a distance of 10 cm from the forehead to the inner forearm.
When performing a twin forearm guarding block while on an L-Stance, the front hand should be
vertically aligned with the first toe.
8 TKD Fundamentals Book
RISING BLOCK
Chookyo Makgi

Nopunde Bakat Palmok Yop Makgi
Blocking Tool: Outer forearm. The area 10 cm
away from the wrist joint going back towards
the elbow.

Should be delivered at eye level and in

line with the shoulder joint line. Once fully
delivered the body should be half facing and
the front of the fist should vertically align with
the third toe.

9
PUNCH
Jirugi
Attacking Tool: Front 2 knuckles (they are
fused together, therefore they are stronger).

After a middle punch is fully delivered while on

a walking stance, the front 2 knuckles should
vertically align with the front toe.
A middle punch is delivered to the center of
your body and at shoulder level.

When delivering a high punch, the front of the

fist should vertically align with the third toe.
A high punch is delivered at eye level.

Pulling Hand: After the punch has been

delivered, the fist of the pulling hand should be in the center of the body, at belt level.

KNIFE HAND SIDE STRIKE

Yop Taerigi
Attacking Tool: Outer side of the hand.

Preparing to deliver a Knife Hand Side Strike

- When crossing the arms, the bottom hand should be at chest
level and in the center of the body, at a distance of 30 cm
when measuring from the chest to the inside of the fist.

10 TKD Fundamentals Book

STRAIGHT FINGERTIP THRUST
Sonkut Tulgi
Purpose: Strike to the solar plexus area.
- The flat hand under the elbow is used to
deflect an attack towards you.

Preparing to deliver Straight Fingertip Thrust

- Arms should be bent upwards 90 degrees,
elbows in the middle of the body, bottom of
fisted hands facing towards you and release
the tension in the fist. The fists should
be at shoulder height – the inside of the
fists should be horizontally aligned with
the outside of the shoulders. The distance
between the fists should be one shoulder
width.

SINE WAVE

A full sine wave has 3 parts, and its sequence is “Down, Up, Down”.
When creating a sine wave from a parallel ready stance position, the front knee of the supporting leg
should be in line with the front toes.
When moving forward and crossing the center line, your foot should be at a distance of half shoulder
width.
When creating a sine wave while moving forward from a walking stance, you drop your body when
the rear heel reaches the front toe of the supporting leg.
As soon as you pass the front toe of the supporting leg you should start moving upward.
As we perform the second part of the sine wave, when the body rises on the up motion before
delivery, the hands will go back 20 cm creating a backwards motion. Once you’ve reached the high
point on the second part of the sine wave, that’s when you are ready to drop down and start the
delivery of your technique.

TIP:
- Prepare the delivery of your technique while your body is in the first down position.
- When you are delivering a technique moving forward, backward or sideways, the foot should not
touch the floor but should be paralleled to the floor.
- When the body rises on the up motion, the hands will move 20 cm forwards or backwards,
depending on the technique.

the forehead; the front arm blocks an attack to the middle section of the body.

TIP: Sine Wave

- Movement #13 – Low block: you need to perform 1 full sine wave.
- Movement #14 – Rising block right after the low block: you will need to produce 1 full sine wave.
It is performed at half the regular speed, and in a continuous motion. While preparing to deliver
the rising block your body should be in half facing and once it’s fully delivered your body should
be in full facing.
- Movement #18 – Knife-hand side strike after rising block: The pivoting motion performed before
delivering the knife hand side strike is called “Right Spot Turn Counter Clockwise”.
- Movement #20 – Knife-hand side strike after high punch: when preparing to deliver the knife-
hand side strike your hand should start to get ready as we go into the “down” part of the sine
wave.

TIP:
- Movement #3 – before you deliver the second Outer Forearm Side Block, your body should be
front facing.
When getting ready to turn to the other side, the front foot comes in the length of a foot on the
C/D line – the heel should be aligned to the center line. The foot that’s coming in should go down
with the bottom of the ball of the foot and land in line with the heel of the supporting leg.
- Movement #4 – reversed punch: you should produce 1 full sine wave and your body should be full
facing.
- Movement #5 – before you deliver the Middle Knife Hand guarding Block, your body should be
side facing, once fully delivered your body should be half facing.
- Movement #7 – after delivering the fingertip thrust, we twist the fingertip trust hand counter
clockwise by 90 degrees. The purpose of the movement is to release yourself from a hand grab.
When at the releasing point, both feet should turn 45 degrees from their current position, by
slightly lifting the heels and using only the balls of your feet.
- Movement #8 – Back fist:
• Purpose: Strike to the temple (eye level).
• The hands should be crossing at chest level, with the arm performing the back fist on the
bottom and with the top of the hands facing upwards. After the technique is fully delivered,
your body should be half facing and the back fist should be in line with the first toe.
- Movement #10 – The pivoting motion performed before delivering the Outer Forearm Side Block
is called “Right Spot Turn Counter Clockwise”.
- Movement #14 – Twin High Wedging Block:
• The angle of the Twin High Wedging Block should be 25 degrees from the C line to A Line, this
is to get closer to the center line.
• The block is delivered at eye level and the back of the fists are facing outwards, with a
separation of 15 cm between fists. The fists should be positioned half facing.
• There is NO hip rotation when delivering a Twin High Wedging Block.
• When the block is fully delivered the front of the fists should vertically align with the first toe.
• The pivoting motion performed before delivering the second Twin High Wedging Block is
called “Left Spot Turning”.
- Movement #15 – The hands should remain in the twin high wedging block position when
delivering the front snap kick, which should be aimed at the middle section of the body and
delivered in the same angle as the twin high block. The front snap kick should come back right
beside the center of the supporting leg before you land.
- Movements #16 and #17 – Two punches to the solar plexus area (two breaths):
• First punch: produce 1 full sine wave (3 parts).
• Second punch: it is delivered in a fast motion, and you should produce a partial sine wave (2
parts – up, down).
- Movements #23 and #24 – Knife Hand Side Strike:
• Should be delivered to the middle section and the body should be positioned on a sitting
stance and side facing.
• When preparing to deliver the second Knife Hand Side Strike, the left foot needs to come in all
the way in next to the right foot, before the right foot moves out to the other side, creating a
half moon motion.
- After completing the pattern, your right foot should move back into Parallel Ready Stance.
