I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standards The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of probability.
B. Performance Standards The learner is able to formulate and solve practical problems involving probability of simple
events.
C. Learning Competencies At the end of the lesson, each learner should be able to:
1. Interpret the uses of complement rule.
2. Solve for the probability of an event using the complement rule.

II. CONTENT Rules of Probability (Complement Rule)

IV. PROCEDURES Facilitator’s Activity Learners’ Activity

A. Reviewing previous “Good morning/afternoon class.” “Good morning/afternoon ma’am.”
lesson or presenting the new
lesson “Say present if your name is called.”
The teacher will call each names for the attendance. “Present.”

“What have we discussed last meeting? Anyone

from the class who can give some recapitulation.” “Last meeting, we discussed about the
disjoint and the non-disjoint events.”
“How these two are different from each other?” “Ma’am, disjoint events are events that
cannot occur at the same time. On the
other hand, the non-disjoint events are
events that can occur at the same
time.”
“What are the other names of these two events?” “Disjoint events are also called as
mutually exclusive events while the
non-disjoint events can be also called as
not mutually exclusive events.”
“Excellent.”

B. Establishing a purpose “For this lesson, our objectives will be the following. A student will read the objectives
for the lesson Kindly read.” pasted on the board.

C. Presenting “I will be presenting you some topics from your

examples/instances of the elementary years. Who wants to answer?” A student will go to the board and will
new lesson answer the following.
SUBTRACTING WHOLE NUMBERS AND FRACTIONS
Answer the following. Answers

5. 5.

6. 6.

“Okay, I guess your knowledge are already refreshed

regarding fractions.”

D. Discussing new concepts Rules of Probability

and practicing new skills #1 1. Complement Rule
Denote “all events that are not A” as Aᶜ. Since
either A or not A must happen, P(A) + P(Aᶜ) = 1.
Hence, we derive the following formula.

P(Event happens) = 1 - P(Event doesn't happen)

P(A) = 1 - P(Aᶜ)
P(Aᶜ) = 1 – P(A)

Example:
When throwing a fair die, what is the
probability of getting a number that is not 6?

P(not 6) =

Example:
1. What is the probability of drawing a card that
is not an 8 in a standard deck of card?
“What is the complement of drawing a card that is
not an 8?” “Getting a card that is an 8.”
“How many 8 cards are there in a standard deck of
cards?” “There are 4 cards.”
“Yes, so our solution will be like this.”

E. Discussing new concepts 2. The table shows the blood types of people in
and practicing new skills #2 Pinabacdao.

“What is the probability that a person in Pinabacdao

is not a Type O? What will be our solution?” P(not type O) =

“Yes, that’s correct.”

“What about the probability that a person is not a

blood type A?” P(not type O) =

“What will be the probability of a person not being a

blood type B?”

“Lastly, what is the probability that the person is

neither blood type AB nor blood type O?”

F. Developing mastery “I will be grouping the class into 6. Each group will The students will go to their groups and
(Leads to Formative answer the following.” will answer the following.
Assessment 3)
Problem 1 Answers
A basket contains 8 yellow balls, 5 orange 1)
balls, 7 green balls and 3 red balls. What is the
probability that you will obtain a green ball when
you pick one from the basket?

Problem 2 2)
Jack and Jill were playing the deck of cards. It
was Jill’s turn to pick a card. What will be the
probability that she will not be picking a card that is
a multiple of 4?

G. Finding practical This applies in the examples of discussion.

application of concepts and
skills in daily living
H. Making generalizations “Do you have any questions? Or something to clarify
and abstractions about the from our discussion today?” “None, ma’am.”
lesson “Did you fully understand our lesson?” “Yes, ma’am.”

“What was the first rule of probability that we have

discussed?” “The complement rule.”

“What have you learned from this rule?” “The complement rule is simply
subtracting the opposite or the
complement of the event from 1.”
“What is again the formula for the complement
rule?” P(A) = 1 - P(Aᶜ)

“Very well said.”

I. Evaluating Learning On a half sheet of paper, answer the following. Answers

1. In a little box is the letters of the word 1.
‘disestablishmentarianism’. What is the probability
that you will be able to pick a letter that is not an S?
2.
2. Using 3 dice and rolling it simultaneously,
what is the probability of getting a number not an
even, getting a number not a prime and a number
multiple of 2 for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd die respectively.

J. Additional activities or Research the other rules of probability and advance

application or remediation study it.
