Recreation is for the rich as well as for the poor. It is for the young, the adults and for
senior citizens. It is also for normal people and for the ill and the handicapped. Recreation is
a universal need of man.
Man, since the dawn of history, has had some forms of recreation. His main concern
through was to survive after providing himself food, clothes, shelter and recreation from his
enemies he engaged himself somehow in some forms of relaxation activities.
Recreational activities/games became instrument for developing physical health. An
outlet for self-expression and creativity, a force for developing characters, possible
preventive and cure for social life. It also occupy the individual’s free time. Music, dances,
games and sports drama. Outdoor education and camping plus all sorts of arts and craft
activities like painting, ceramics, and leather craft, flower arrangement and flower making,
garden hobbies that gives human being pleasure and satisfaction to balance his busy and
pressured life.
The growth of recreation is the result of a number of developments – shorter

attitude toward life, all sorts of inventions like modern transportation facilities, television
networks, motion pictures and a great upsurge of fun machines that enable man to
experience a variety of leisure.
Recreation will continue to help shape his role as he adjusts to his complex
environment.

II. LEISURE AND RECREATION

The word leisure comes from the Latin word “LICERE” meaning “to be permitted”.
It
Means the time left after the practical necessities of life have been attended to. Eating,
sleeping and bodily care are essentials for existence, working is a must for subsistence. The
hours that are left after all these basic needs of men have been unaccomplished are referred
to as leisure.
The definition may vary but the emphasis is on the time element. Leisure is referred
to as unobligated time, free or spare time or unoccupied time when one is free to do what he
chooses.
Recreation includes any activity that is participated in voluntarily during leisure and
gives immediate satisfaction. It includes a variety of activities such as games, sports, music,
dances, art forms, hobbies and certain amusements.

Recreation may be classified as:

1. Spectator or participant type.
2. Active or passive.

3. Physical or mental.
4. Public, private or commercial.
III. CHARACTERISTICS OF RECREATION
The line or determination between recreational and non-recreational activities is not
rigid. Some forms of recreation can be combined with work, making them more enjoyable
and activities that are generally thought of as recreation may be fore some and even
drudgery to some people. Meyers and Brightbill (1970) gives the following characteristics of
recreation:

1. Recreation involves an activity

This is action as distinguished from rest and there is an exertion of power and forces
not always visible externally.
2. Recreation has no single form
Recreational activities include a variety of leisure pursuits and may be found in
various settings. Its flexibility gives depths to recreation.
3. Recreation is determined by motivation
Why is one activity attractive to a person where another activity has greater appeal
to someone else? The interest, motives and values of an individual determine the kind and
recreation he engages in.
4. Recreation occurs in unobligated time
Eating, sleeping, bodily care and work are activities done for existence and
subsistence. Recreation pursuits are done during leisure. Participation in amusement
activities when the individual is supposed to work or attend classes will never give
satisfaction to the individual. His conscience will bother him.
5. Recreation is voluntarily participated
The individual has a complete freedom to choose the activity or activities he wishes
to participate in or watch.
6. Recreation is universally sought and practiced
“All work and no play will make juan a dull boy.” the saying goes without recreation
life becomes unbearable and it is never satisfying and balanced. Recreation is an open road
to opportunities for self-discovery, self-expression and creativity.
7. Recreation has by-products
Rewards in terms of personal development, intellectual, physical, and social growth,
better health, and improved citizenship and derived from involvement in worth-while
recreational activities, undesirable forms may contribute to degeneration of personality and
disintegration.
8. Recreation gives direct satisfaction
