THE EFFECTIVENESS OF E-LEARNING CLASSES

Table of Contents

Chapter 1: The Problems and Its Background

• Introduction

The global impact of COVID19 pandemic that in early months of 2020 is tremendous.

To contain the spread of the virus, the government of all countries restricted the

movement of its citizens and the normal activities in every community were controlled.

As community implemented its own health protocols, mass gatherings were prohibited,

activities with close contacts were banned, and policies on social distancing and were

strictly implemented.

The education sector was among those adversely affected by the Covid-19 pandemic

Additionally, every young person's education was significantly impacted. However,

despite this, we continued with our studies rather than stopping entirely because our

homes are now our classrooms. We now enjoy taking online classes, virtual classes, and

distance learning modules because they have grown in popularity. But is this actually

helpful, or will our students face an additional hardship? Based on my experiences over

more than two years as a student, I have both good and bad things. Since I set aside time

to study and complete my homework, I find that this study system is convenient for me.

But the challenge here is that I find it challenging to finish a lesson because, in addition

to studying, I still have a lot of other things to do, like housework. The absence of

technology and internet during our classes in the midst of the pandemic presents another

difficulty for our students. When comparing face-to-face classes and online classes, it is

clear that there are more assignments and other activities that must be completed online

than in face-to-face classes because they must be completed at the same time, which

prevents us from working together. Instead, we must complete the various tasks while

sitting in front of our computers. It appears to be a more difficult test than the

conventional classroom instruction. Due to the fact that they can only communicate via

chat or email, teachers and students also have trouble communicating with one another.

• Statement of the Problem

The study's reported that the challenges were internet connectivity, gadget, and

the outcome of the learners, online education experience, technology use tools, time

management, anxiety, and coronavirus disease stress. It can be said that taking classes

online is popular right now and that doing well in them, even while at home, is a huge

challenge for everyone. Due to the fact that not everyone can afford to have internet at

home, Google Meet, Google Classroom or Messenger and etc. are often used for

communication instead.

As the pandemic prolonged, educators were threatened of the detrimental effects

of the lockdown and the disruption of mental development of the students.

The lack of interaction with students is a significant drawback of online courses.

But fortunately, access to data networks is simple for the generation of today. Although it

is not the same as face-to-face learning or classes, it still enables students to communicate

with friends and even teachers. The teachers went beyond their duties to help the students

and were present throughout the majority of the day.

A few of the issues that everyone must handle include creating and distributing

modules, preparing a smartphone or laptop for an online class, and altering this set-up.

• Significance of the Study

This study demonstrated that, even in the event of a pandemic, e-learning

platforms are helpful to all students. E-learning platforms' / online class usability and

ease of use enable students to continue their education even when the movement of the

community were restricted. These two characteristics raise students' levels of satisfaction

at school, even at home. The use of these platforms in the classroom has a big impact on

academic factors. Finally, students' understanding is improved when the system and the

information are of a caliber that adequately meets their needs. Therefore, this study has

demonstrated that because of their distinct and distinctive features, E-learning platforms

are irrelevant alternative teaching methods in addition to traditional classes.

• Scope and Limitation of the Study

To ensure continuity of providing learning programs to all learners they shifted to

alternative modalities. Among those modalities is conducting classes using E-learning

platforms. Education is the only industry that is completely transferred to online mode in

most countries around the world. Online learning was the best solution for continuing

education during the pandemic, especially in tertiary education. The way that students are

educated is a tremendous change. with E-Learning / online class, learning is made

simpler, easier, and more effective than with the old-fashioned chalk and board method.

Although the environment in a classroom still differs when the teacher and students

interact personally, it is necessary to make the method of imparting the lesson more

engaging, imperative, and necessary in order to foster the student's ability to concentrate

and pour cooperation.

Chapter 2. Review of Related Literature

• Conceptual and Research Literature

E- learning / Online class

Online learning can be any type of learning that takes place on the internet. This may be a

supplemental course, a full degree program, or self-study. More times than not, online learning is

asynchronous, because students don't have to learn at the same time and place as their instructors

are teaching. Online class are used by students to interact with one another while reading,

viewing, listening to, and watching educational resources. The ability to more easily share

knowledge is one of digital media's primary roles in modern society. The evolution of libraries or

collections of knowledge as digital resources for education is one of the keys to the development

of digital infrastructure in the field of knowledge. In the context of knowledge sharing,

innovative and academic projects are also becoming more and more common in public spaces.

The drawbacks of technology and our capacity to utilize it, on the other hand, have given rise to

brand-new issues.

The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of various factors on students' opinions of

these online learning platforms. Many researchers have been concerned about the acceptance and

adoption of online learning platforms since 2006. People's acceptance of online learning

platforms has gotten a lot of attention in recent years because they are being used to build new

educational environments, educational tools, and schools that are very different from traditional

classrooms. The adoption of various models reflects the pressing need to address how this

technology is perceived by students, teachers, and others, as well as how it is actually used. The

adopted model's variations show how different models, like TAM, FB, and UTAUT, can be used

to investigate these technologies. During the pandemic, a review of any learning platform's

effectiveness concentrated on significant external elements like gender, cultural differences,

personality types, technical support, technology training, equipment accessibility, and

experience. These studies also made clear the significance of the flow theory and perceived

enjoyment. The main justification for this is that these elements may increase the likelihood that

users will stay on these platforms during the pandemic. They can cooperate with the other

models to provide more thorough analyses and results on how these factors affect the teaching-

learning process.

Sufficient gadget to access for the E-Learning / Online class

Nowadays, technology is important for students. Since they need to develop their

learning abilities and broaden their knowledge, these devices are important for them. But they

can also help teachers get better at what they do.

With the educational trend of online learning, students can learn anything they want at

their own pace. While education is important in the modern era, it is equally important to take

student interests seriously. E-learning makes it possible for students to learn most of the subjects

they are interested in.

However, it doesn't restrict the student in any way unless and until the proper resources

are made available to them, along with content created by someone who is already aware of the

learner's needs and objectives. However, the COVID-19 changes to eLearning have been very

beneficial for students who are enthusiastic about their careers.

When everyone was attempting to save themselves, eLearning gave them the opportunity

to learn more new things and advance their careers. The devices and necessary tools that

eLearning students will need when enrolled in an eLearning session will be discussed in this

article.

smartphones. These gadgets have advantages and disadvantages specific to eLearning, just like

tablets do. Depending on your individual training requirements, you'll need to make a decision.

Reliable internet connectivity

One of the most powerful and effective informational tools available in the world

today is the internet. For students, using the internet has many advantages and has been found to

be among the best places to learn. Students' lives have changed, and it has made many things

simpler for them. Now that so many students are enrolled in online courses, academic education

is changing. Nowadays, the majority of assignments are finished on computers while using the

internet. Although there are many advantages to the internet, there are also some disadvantages,

so it is crucial to teach students how to use it responsibly.

For students who are shy to talk or ask questions to their teachers, the internet acts as a bridge.

Since our teachers aren't always with us, we can ask them questions that we have trouble

understanding or that we can't find the answers to using social media applications. To put it

another way, we can manage our faculty. Additionally, it has been simple for teachers to inform

their students of any announcements or reminders they may have missed. We have benefited

greatly from the Internet, particularly in our current generation where almost all activities are

learned online.

Today's students experience both positive and negative impacts from the Internet.

Students benefit greatly from it in terms of research papers, projects, and assignments,

particularly online. The majority of the information that students require is either readily

available online or can be found there. Students stop visiting libraries or picking up books

because they are confident that they can find everything they need online. It is said that learning

is more enjoyable if you are having fun, and the Internet and social media both offer educational

games. Additionally, thanks to educational video games, students are motivated to learn more

now than they were before the Internet.

Students have adequate to the materials necessary in their studies

The only information sources in higher education were lectures, books, and course

materials. This shift toward more open access to information and the use of online resources

other than those offered by lecturers is likely to hasten and alter how students learn. In terms of

students' academic engagement in the classroom, this study aims to help students better

understand the impact of these changes and perceptions of their studies. There has been

extensive research on the value of lecturers, the value of online learning resources, and the

relationship between students and lecturers. However, only a small amount of research has been

done to compare how internet use among students in various nations and cultures affects them

personally.

Online learning is convenient. After a long day, perhaps some of you are burdened by a long

commute. It is impossible to consider making one more trip before returning home. With the

advent of virtual learning, you can now choose to attend classes in the comfort of your own

home while donning your favorite pajamas. You can look up any videos you might have missed

later and catch up on class. Even better, you could utilize your commute time by taking an online

course while riding the bus or train home. All you need is a computer or smartphone with an

internet connection.

Online classes are more cost-effective because the student no longer needs to book a

physical space to hold classes, which results in enormous savings. In the end, this results in more

affordable classes for the student. Your costs as a student quickly increase when you have to

physically attend a class. When you take classes online, you not only save money on the

essentials like books and supplies, but you also save money on lunch and travel expenses.

Online learning can result in social isolation for both faculty and students because there is

little to no social interaction. According to Sander Tamm of e-student.org, "the e-learning

methods currently used in education tend to make participating students undergo contemplation,

remoteness, and a lack of interaction." Stress and anxiety levels can rise as a result of the

absence of interpersonal interaction in online learning environments. Online learning can also

prevent students from developing critical communication skills. This shows that not being able

to interact with other students and teachers during online school can have serious negative

effects, as Neil Kokemuller from Seattle explains, as it "takes away from some of the social and

team-building that occurs informally in college classrooms."

In conclusion, I believe that the disadvantages of online learning outweigh the

advantages. Even though online education helps to keep our community safe during COVID-19,

the disadvantages are much more noticeable than the benefits. The many negatives presented in

e-learning outrank the beneficial impacts, therefore it should only be used during a situation

where in-person learning is neither viable nor available.

Instructor effective in conducting online classes

A productive environment is important for learning whether it takes place in a physical

classroom or online. Although students are not confined to a single space, teachers still need to

take deliberate steps to control their behavior and engagement in an online environment. Below

are some obstacles to online learning that teachers can expect, along with online classroom

management techniques to successfully overcome them.

Five times more information is learned in an e-learning or online class than in a

conventional face-to-face class by the students who attend. Online classes give students total

control over their education, and since they are studying at home, they can complete their

assignments whenever they want. In comparison to traditional classes, students who take online

courses typically work more quickly and retain more information. They can learn more quickly

in the classroom when the material is familiar to them, but they must learn more slowly when the

material takes more time.

Online education has many advantages, including flexibility. Online courses are

frequently available for students who might not be able to participate in traditional classes. For

example, a full-time worker going back to school can plan reading, writing, and test time for the

evenings or weekends. Additionally, when they have other obligations or work part-time,

students may combine online and traditional classes to fill out their schedules.

Distractions can be disadvantageous in online classes because they may tempt students who use

their computers and the Internet to participate in online learning. It's possible for a student

working on a challenging assignment to find herself online browsing, checking social

networking sites, or watching the newest trending video. Setting aside breaks in between work

periods is one way students can manage their time more skillfully and avoid these distractions.

By knowing that she can check social networking sites after finishing her schoolwork, the online

learner will be able to concentrate on her assignments.

In addition to the studies on general education mentioned above, other studies have looked at

students' perspectives on emergency remote education. According to Abbasi et al. (2020),

students preferred in-person instruction over online learning when they were unable to attend

class due to the epidemic. As a result, administrative teams at schools and educators should take

the necessary steps to enhance online learning environments.

Agarwal and Kaushik (2020) made the claim that students believed online courses

changed their normal procedures, saved a significant amount of time, and made it simple for

them to obtain teaching materials based on a survey of 77 medical students in their classroom

settings. The number of participants and technical difficulties during class discussions were the

main learning obstacles. When Owusu-Fordjour et al. (2020) looked into 214 college students'

online learning, they discovered that the pandemic had a detrimental impact on their education

because many of them were unaccustomed to learning effectively on their own. The learning

platforms that were used presented a problem for the majority of the students in this area because

they lacked access to the Internet and technical knowledge of Internet-connected devices.

In the recent years, particularly, many universities and institutions have adopted a novel strategy

called virtual learning to effectively impart knowledge to students. Active learning

environments, creative interactions, and course planning are priorities in a virtual learning

environment. Teachers in an online learning setting give their students the guidance they need to

be successful while still being self-reliant.

Virtual learning has advantages and disadvantages for both students and teachers, just like any

other process. Virtual learning's main benefit is that it improves students' perception,

communication, educational quality, and critical thinking while also fostering a sense of student

independence. However, one of the biggest disadvantages of this new teaching approach is

probably that it takes a lot of people a while to get used to it. However, since technology

advances at a breakneck pace, we must make every effort to keep up.

Virtual learning ultimately has a variety of effects on students in higher education. There are

situations where students will encounter difficulties, and there are situations where they will

greatly profit from and enjoy this experience.

The term "basic online modality" refers to the skillful application of the most fundamental online

learning resources, including the grade book, navigation tools, and announcements feature. It is

frequently grouped with other terms like instructor expertise in e-teaching (Paechter, Maier, &

Macher, 2010), service quality (Mohammadi, 2015), and instructional quality (Artino, 2010). It

is sometimes referred to as technology when it is used in a limited sense (Asoodar et al., 2016;

Bollinger & Martindale, 2004; Sun et al., 2008). Sun et alempirical .'s study was the only one

that did not consider Basic Online Modality to be a significant piece of technology (2008). Some

studies stress the significance of training because basic instructor training addresses basic online

modality (e.g., Asoodar et al., 2016).

Technical difficulties, increased screen time, a feeling of isolation, and other drawbacks

of online learning are all outweighed by its advantages in terms of affordability, accessibility,

and effectiveness. Nevertheless, no matter how everything turns out, never forget to enjoy the

journey and recognize your successes along the way.

Students may access online classes

On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) designated COVID-19 as a

pandemic illness. In an effort to stop the COVID-19 virus from spreading, an emergency state

was declared on March 19. There is a two-month curfew that follows it.

Due to university closures, education is now primarily conducted online. The necessity of having

sound infrastructure and being prepared to offer online courses is highlighted by the closure of

universities. Jordan is regarded as one of the top nations for Internet infrastructure, and the

Middle East as a whole is very advanced (Jordan Times, 2017). Online education becomes a tool

to stop the epidemic and ensure social segregation. Online courses offer practical learning

resources and give students 24/7 access to educational platforms at their convenience. In

addition, it provides flexibility regardless of location and hour. Additionally, it offers free

questions, open responses, and feedback on the subject matter of the assigned courses (Rosell,

2020).

Since the last decade, technology has played a significant role in education (Almahasees and

Jaccomard, 2020). To deal with the profound changes in technology, educational methods,

approaches, and strategies have been updated. Due to the widespread adoption of technology in

all spheres of life, the technological companies have created a number of online platforms (Al-

Azawei et al., 2017; Englund et al., 2017; Santos et al., 2019). Our social, business, and

educational lives are now influenced by technology. When taking online classes, the use of the

Internet is essential for spreading knowledge (Silva and Cartwright, 2017).

According to Christensen, online distance education in the United States has only attained a

secondary innovation quality: sustainability through expanding access to specific student

segments in an economical way. The customer and the provider are taken into account in

Christensen's work, which differs from a large portion of the cost effectiveness research

literature in education. When the consumer is considered in the cost-effectiveness discussion, it

becomes obvious that offering education online reduces the consumer's opportunity costs. As a

result, the innovation of online learning in formal higher education has benefited consumers as a

whole.

The question of whether online/distance education is innovative has been addressed by

Clayton Christensen, author of The Innovators Dilemma. Innovation comes in two flavors:

sustaining and disruptive. An enduring innovation is online education. Sustaining innovations

are advancements that benefit the customer or the provider but do not result in fundamental

changes to costs, quantities, or customer options. Within the context of the industry, enduring

innovations can coexist without difficulty.

The study carefully examined how professors and students viewed online education. According

to the study, online classes are more effective than online education. Due to the difficulty in

completing the adaptation to online courses and the lack of interaction between students and

their tutors, online learning students face a number of difficulties. E-learning platforms

encourage student-centered learning and are flexible enough to adapt to sudden crises like

COVID-19. Jordanian universities ought to participate in educating students about data security.

Additionally, the government ought to counsel telecommunications providers to enhance student

services at a reasonable cost. It is important to note that synchronous classes for students with

special needs are preferable, and that these students' progress should be facilitated by special

needs specialists.

Online classes an effective alternative to face-to-face classes

Due to the fact that more businesses are beginning to incorporate the benefits of face-to-face

learning into their digital strategies and develop online blended learning that meets all the

requirements, online learning is now even more effective. The best of both worlds can be found

when self-paced learning is combined with social group online learning when it is necessary. The

best combinations take advantage of the opportunities provided by the various modes of

learning. The previous drawbacks of online training have also been rendered obsolete by the

advancement of corporate E-learning technologies. Online blends can be consumed and are

equally effective.

Online education is generally more efficient than traditional classroom instruction. According to

research, 80% of organizations anticipate that as live training restrictions loosen, their use of

digital learning will either stay the same, increase, or only slightly decrease. E-learning probably

won't ever completely take the place of traditional classroom instruction. However, it is clear that

E-learning is here to stay and that organizations are increasingly viewing online learning as the

way of the future, with no immediate plans to invest in more face-to-face training.

In conclusion, there are many benefits to both face-to-face and online education. In many places,

the two systems have been used to make sure that students learn various skills. Furthermore,

technology has made online education widespread in the modern era. In order to stop the spread

of the virus, many nations are now encouraging the technique due to the current COVID-19

pandemic. One could counter that face-to-face instruction has more benefits than online

instruction. For instance, letting students interact with others enhances their development

because they learn about various cultures and religions. Additionally, the interaction between

students and teachers is successful, which aids teachers in understanding the difficulties that

students face in various courses. Face-to-face learning also has fewer disruptions than online

learning, where people may become distracted by background noise. As a result, the benefits of

face-to-face instruction show that the method is superior to online education and should be

promoted to enhance learners' performance and growth.

The basis of online learning is sharing information rather than modeling learning examples,

passing skills, or building relationships to foster learning. Online learners do not have to interact

with each other or build relationships. The lack of a sense of community predisposes learners to

the feeling of isolation. Communication happens through learning software or email, further

reducing the chances of holistic learning. The benefits of reduced costs, use of technology, and

progressive storage of data do not outweigh the primary needs of building skills, community, and

modeling examples.

According to the findings of a recent national research study, 78% of the more than 1,000

students polled still think that classroom instruction is preferable. Students are able to physically

view the work and use tactile stimulation for their learning needs, according to USA Today

(2016). Students who learn in person can identify their learning style. Students can use their

knowledge to guide them in their educational experience and needs by identifying their preferred

learning style.

Resources offered by online classes are adequate

This policy brief demonstrates that students' attitudes and dispositions toward learning, such as

ambition or motivation, are significant drivers of their educational achievements and can help

ensure that online learning is as effective as possible. It is based on forthcoming analysis in the

Skills Outlook 2021. This summary also demonstrated the critical roles that families and teachers

play in helping children navigate the difficulties of at-home learning. Families can support their

children emotionally and academically, and teachers can serve as mentors by promoting active

learning, motivating students, and making sure that no one is falling behind. These interventions

have a significant impact on how effective online learning is. Given the significant role that

teachers and families play in the context of school closures, governments can encourage

effective engagement by, for instance, increasing the availability of family leave and enhancing

parent-school communication.

Online learning, in the opinion of Susa Dhakal, offers students more flexibility in scheduling and

less financial outlay. They can pick the courses and subjects they want to learn and study them

when it's convenient for them. Learning new skills and boosting their level of knowledge while

remaining in their own environment is made possible by this. For instance, a Nepali student who

wants to take a business management course in Australia doesn't have to stay in Australia; he can

study online and finish the course from his home. Remote learning is therefore cost-effective and

time-saving.

However, there is less interaction between teachers and students in online courses and a

greater emphasis is placed on the theoretical side of learning. It promotes passive learning and

lacks the practical components of education. It is crystal clear that students believe they learn

less effectively outside of the classroom. According to a recent study, more students believed

classroom instruction to be far more effective than distance learning.

In conclusion, the popularity of online learning among young adults has been growing

steadily for many years. While some people view it favorably, others believe it to be ineffective.

Its effectiveness can be emphasized in order to prove that it is more cost-effective than

traditional classroom instruction.

• Study Framework

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

This research study used Media Ecology Theory by Marshall McLuhan. Media

Ecology Theory (MET) aims to understand the social impact of technology and

communication (McLuhan, 1964). Media Ecology Theory (MET) claims that media act

directly to shape and organize culture. Media ecology, or the study of how media and

communication processes influence human perception, feeling, understanding, and value,

is focused around communication studies (Parameswaran, 2008).

McLuhan’s theory of media ecology is best captured in his famous aphorism:

“The medium is the message.” Previously, "medium" was conceptualized in relation to

transportation. Today, it is commonly understood in communication studies as the

environment. Media ecology focuses on media-as-environment and environment-as-

media, with a clear interest in its evolution, effects, and forms.

The Impact of media technology is a key concept in MET, supported by three key

assumptions: Media permeates every action in society, media modifies our perceptions,

organizes our experiences, media connects the world. Together, we cannot escape the

presence of the media as they permeate the reality of our daily lives.

According to McLuhan, it’s not technological abnormality that demands our

attention, since it’s hard not to notice the new and different. Instead, we need to focus on

our everyday experience of technology. A medium shape us because we partake of it over

and over until it becomes an extension of ourselves.
