Foreword
This code was prepared by the Technical Committee on Construction Industry IT Standard under the
direction of the Information Technology Standards Committee
This code was prepared with reference to some parts of code of practice for Building Drawing, CP6:
1978, which was published by Singapore Institute of Standards and Industrial Research.
The use of computer-aided design (CAD) has been extensive and is still growing in the construction
industry in Singapore. The ability of CAD to allow reuse and sharing of information will contribute
greatly to the productivity in building design and construction, which involves extensive information
and co-ordination between all parties in building industry.
CAD files in the form of digital drawings are now a common medium of data exchange between all
parties in building industry and the building authorities. The development of a set of CAD symbols for
use by all bodies/parties is a component in fully realising the potential of CAD for more efficient work
and communications.
This standard has been drawn to establish a set of generic symbols to be used by all parties in
building industry who are involved in preparing and using technical documentation by means of CAD
systems. It is envisaged that the set of generic CAD symbols in this standard will be revised and
updated regularly to adjust to changing in CAD technology.
This standard has made reference to symbol libraries from various standard organisations. Many
symbols in this standard are also contributed by consulting firms, contractors and members of
professional institutions. Acknowledgement is made to these firms that have given their permission to
use the information in this standard.
NOTE
1. Singapore Standards are subject to periodic review to keep abreast of technological changes and
new technical developments. The revisions of Singapore Standard are announced through the
issue of either amendment slips or revised editions.
2. Compliance with a Singapore Standard does not exempt users from legal obligations.

Code of Practice for CAD Standards – Part 2, CAD Symbols
1 Scope and objectives
The scope of this standard is to recommend a set of drawing conventions and a common set of symbols to
be used by all parties in the building industry in the preparation of drawings.
The content of this standard is broadly classified under two categories – (1) Drafting Conventions and (2) 2D
Symbols.
2 Drafting conventions
Drafting convention are made of symbols to represent entities, which do not represent a building object, in a
drawing. These are hatch patterns, drawing sheet sizes, title blocks, abbreviations etc. They are grouped
under the following sub-headings and can be found in Annex A
3 2D symbols
2D symbols are symbols to represent entities of a building object in a drawing. They are drafted at 1:1 scale
and are stylised for 1:100 drawings. 2D Symbols are classified into three main categories and are found in
Annex B.
• Architectural symbols
• Doors & windows
• External works and landscaping
• Plumbing drainage and sanitary fitting
• Civil and structural symbols
• Civil
• Structural
• M & E symbols
• Air conditioning
• Electrical
• Fire Protection
• Plumbing & sanitary
• Gas
7
When the symbols are implemented on computer aided design platform, they will also contain two
additional non-graphical attributes. The first attribute describes the layer name on which this symbol
would be automatically inserted at the time of insertion. The second attribute holds the description of
the symbol itself. It is recommended that the file names of the symbols implemented on computer
aided design platform follow the DOS file format of 8.3. The file naming convention of the symbol will
follow the CAD Layer naming convention. (The file names will be transparent to users, as the
selection of symbols will be based on the description of the symbol).

Annex A Drafting conventions
A.1 Sheet sizes and title block
Sheet sizes are based on the ISO standards for sheet sizes. The standard sizes are A0 to A4. The
sizes are proportional, leading to simple reduction and enlargements. The bigger size sheets may be
easily folded for filing and dispatch to that of A4 size.
