Cybersex: Exploring Motives of Grade 11 Students Resorting on Sexual Activities within the Internet in

Vicente P. Trinidad National High School

INTRODUCTION

This research paper will aim to find out the motives or reasons behind students’ participation in
“Cybersex”. Miller (2013) via the book “Principles of Addiction”, Cybersex can be defined as a
subcategory of online sexual activity where Internet is used for sexually gratifying activities. Cybersex
can be related to sexual trafficking but is done online. That makes it hard to be dealt with, because it can
happen anytime, anywhere. With the use of the Internet, Cybersex is very accessible. That is why even
minors are very prone to it making it a threat to the society.

The Internet is making it very easy to spread Cybersex. Not only it affect adults but it also affect
minors that is why it is considered as a rising problem to our society. This rising problem is very
controversial, not only it is unknown or new to people’s minds but it is also something that is not being
looked into. Asia Times Staff (2019) said that up to 80% of cybersex victims are Filipino minors. Most
Filipino children are lured or baited by their families into cybersex to earn money. According to the
International Justice-Mission Philippines, 80% of the victims were minors, half of which were 12 years
old or younger. Based on the numbers, age is not a necessity for cybersex trafficking to happen. It would
not matter even if the victim is very young since this world is tainted, hinting the need to conduct this
research. This research is very crucial to raise awareness to people’s minds about this problem and it
could also be a way to prevent crimes affiliated with Cybersex.

This research will focus on raising awareness about cybersex and how students are being at risk
while participating in cybersex. Raising awareness is a must because many people do not know what
cybersex is. They may have never heard of it or they may have but still not really familiar with it. Some
people also think that cybersex crimes are just hoax, but it is really not. Cybersex does not only involve
sexual trafficking within the internet. It could also be little gestures that people does not take seriously
like the well-known terminology in social media, “Sex on Chat” that will be discussed further later on.
Also, this research would like to focus on providing a basis on how to address this rising problem that
concerns many people who are affected.

This study will investigate the motives of students behind their experiences in sexual activities
within the internet. It will be a qualitative research since the researchers are going to conduct an interview
with the respondents. Since it is a case study, the researchers will not need a lot of respondents so this
research is going to stick with only three respondents. They are students of Grade 11 in Vicente P.
Trinidad National High School. The participants will be providing a confidential information so it will be
best to not name them since they will be providing a sensitive and explicit information about their lived
experiences.

This study aims to determine the causes of students’ participation in cybersex. For the reason that
cybersex is a threat to society, this study aims to prevent students’ participation in cybersex crime to
lessen the rate of cybersex victims. This topic needs a lot of attention, since it is very controversial,
problematic and people does not take it seriously. This research paper is very important to raise awareness
about cybersex, motives of people participating in cybersex, and remind the parents of these students to
look out for their children. Therefore, conducting this research is very significant for students, because it
aims to keep them out of the dangers of cybersex.
