Unit 3: Quadratic Relations

Lesson 7: Quadratic Relations of the Form y = a (x – r) (x – s)

Learning GOAL: In this lesson, I will use the xintercept form of
a quadratic relation to describe the relation and graph it.

[A] Quadratic Relation in the form y = a (x  r) (x  s)

Observation: A relation in the form y = a(x – r)(x – s) is quadratic.

The xintercepts, or zeros are r and s.

[B] Graphing
Describe the graph of the quadratic
relation y = (x – 4)(x + 2)

Sketch the graph and label the

xintercepts, vertex and axis of
y = (x – 4)(x + 2)
symmetry.

To sketch the graph of 6
y = a(xr)(xs), follow these steps : 5

1. On graph paper, plot the values
of r and s on the xaxis. These 3
are the xintercepts of the 2
parabola.

3. Draw the axis of symmetry.
3
4. Find the ycoordinate of the 4
vertex by substituting x = 1 into

5. Plot the vertex and join the two x
intercepts and vertex to form a
parabola.

[C] Examples
1. A quadratic relation has an equation of the form y = a(xr)(xs). The graph of the
relation has zeros at (2,0) and (6,0) and passes through the point (3,5).
Determine the value of ‘a’.

2. The zeros of a parabola are 10 and 30. The parabola crosses the yaxis at 50.
a) Determine an equation for the parabola.

b) Determine the coordinates of the vertex.
