TEEN DAYS OUT in the UK
Blue Planet Aquarium
If you’re aged 8 – 15, like sharks and are good at
swimming , this is the place for you. I always swimming
on Saturdays, but this weekend I’m not going to the
sports centre. After a diving lesson at the aquarium ,
I’m going swimming with real sharks! The sharks aren’t
very big and they aren’t dangerous. But your friends
won’t know that! Visiting the aquarium is quite
expensive, but it’s a good idea for a birthday present.

Magic Unicorn Theme
Park
Unicorns are magical animals from legends,
but this theme park isn’t very magical. The
riders and rollercoasters are OK, but nothing
special. The only bit my friends and I like is the
Magic Spell Academy, where they teach you to
do magic tricks. We’re not really enjoying our
trip!

#Teen rating Beamish, The living museum of the North

“Daniel, 14, Glasgow” Beamish is a ‘living’ museum. Instead of
looking at old things, I’m actually
experiencing life in the past! You can have a
lesson at the village school, buy things in the
old-fashioned shops and learn how to cook
traditional food. I usually hate museums, but
Beamish is different!

#Teen rating
Giant Swing Adrenaline Quarry “Daisy, 14, Durham”
This isn’t like swings you find in
children’s
playgrounds. It’s very high and scary! I didn’t think
this would be so much fun, its better than a
rollercoaster! You feel as if you are flying! The only
problem is that it doesn’t last very long.

My best friend

Friends are important to us. We do not need too many friends but a
few great friends makes a huge difference in our lives. I have such a good
friend in my life. Her name is Lily and we go to the same school. Although we
are the same age, we do not learn in the same class. Her class is one floor
below mine because we have different interests in studies. I love science and
she loves history.

Lily has a good sense of humour. She always makes me smile when I am
down. She sometimes makes jokes that I can laugh so hard my stomach hurts.
She is the most hardworking person I know and she is never selfish in sharing
what she knows. Her knowledge in world history is amazing. She dreams to
become a history journalist one day.

Lily and I live in the same neighbourhood. Every morning, we take the
school bus together to go to school. Sometimes, my mother would make two
packed meals to give one to Lily. We would eat together during the school
break. I can eat a lot. So when Lily cannot finish her meal I would be the first to
take her food. She always jokes that I might become a teddy bear if I keep
eating so much.

Another reason Lily and I become so close is because we share the

same love for netball. We both play for the school netball team and we train
three times a week after school. Lily is recently chosen as the team captain.
Coach likes that she is a fair person. One time I was late for training, she made
me run five rounds around the court as punishment even though we are close
friends. Besides, she trains hard and always communicate with us during
games.

I am grateful because I have a good friend. Lily has been like a sister to
me. I cannot imagine my life without her.

My school had a new volleyball coach and I attended their training recently. On
my first day of training, our coach talked about the sport and its rules. We were divided
into two teams. 35 Between us, there was a net
about a few metres high. Each team tried to score points by trying to get the ball to
touch the floor in the opponents’ court. We played hard but it was obvious we needed
more training.

I enjoyed the first day of training and it was great working out with other team
members. Coach Jackson even spoke to me personally. 36 He
also said that my height would definitely be an advantage in this sport. He wanted me
to give it a shot in the school volleyball team. 37

I have talked to my parents about this and they encourage me to go for it. My

mother thinks this could be a great opportunity to gain new experience and make new

friends. 38 I want to see how far I can go with this. Plus, I

have always been a fan of sports. 39 I might not have enough time for

my homework and revision once I start training with the group.

Instead of giving up, I spent some time doing research on how to manage my

time better. I found out my answers. 40 And if I follow my timetable

and do things the right way, I will be fine. I think this will be a good experience for me.

PAPER 2

PART 1

Hi Razif,

From all the hobbies you have mentioned. I think I love to do chores, such as be a
kitchen helper and house cleaner. I like to help my mom and sometimes my mom
give me cash for the things that I have done for her. Anyway in the same time I
can make my own saving. I think, there is nothing wrong with these jobs. The
good thing about it is that it is easy to find hobby like that. Maybe it is tiring for
you. However, helping your mom is the best thing that you can do especially
whenever she got sick and you can do the chores without her supervision. It is
because you already used to it. That’s all from me. See you soon.

Jake

PART 2

A person’s habits show who they really are. Many successful people like
Barack Obama, Michael Jordan, and Lee Chong Wei all have many good habits.
These habits are great examples for us to learn from. Here, I want to talk about a
good habit that I have always had with me since I was a little girl.

I always get up early in the morning even when I do not have school. My
mother is the person who taught me this. She always says if we wake up early,
we have more time to do more things and I believe in that too. When I have
school, I will get up early and make sure I have time to eat my breakfast. This will
allow me to focus better during classes. When it is holidays, I will wake up early
to help my mother with her house chores.

Besides, I also realise if I wake up early, I can spend my morning reading

and doing homework. In the afternoon, I will have plenty of time to go out and do
some outdoor activities. I feel healthier and less stressful after exercising.

I think it is important for all of us to have good habits. I recommend everyone to

try waking up early. You will feel that you have more time than the others and you
can do more things than other people. If you have not tried it, try it today!

Questions 17 – 24
Read the text below and answer questions 17 to 24.

I Love Chocolate!
Are you a chocoholic? I am a person who is very fond of chocolates and I eat a lot of it.
Chocolate is said to be the most popular food of all time. People nowadays eat chocolates in
many different forms. We eat chocolate candy, and we drink hot and cold chocolate drinks. The
chocolate we eat today is made from a lot of different ingredients, but the most important
ingredient is cacao bean. The story of cacao bean and its long journey to stores and supermarkets
all over the world started hundreds of years ago in Mexico. Cacao trees need hot and humid
weather and they originally grew in the Yucatán Peninsula.
The Maya were the first people to eat cacao beans. They picked cacao beans from wild trees and
cleared land to cultivate their own trees. They made a drink from cacao beans and exchanged the
beans for other goods. They also used cacao beans for religious ceremonies.
Mayan merchants travelled north and introduced cacao beans to the Aztec people. Soon the
cacao bean was part of the Aztecs´ lives. They also used it as a drink, as part of religious
ceremonies and even as money. With 10 beans, they could buy a rabbit. With 100 beans, they
could buy a slave. The Aztecs could not grow cacao trees because of the dry climate. When the
Aztecs conquered the Maya, they asked for cacao beans as a tribute.

biggest rocket. The day of the rocket festival is very exciting. It is a holiday for whole
village.

The girls wear their best silk sarongs and dance along the road through the village.
Then everybody goes to a field nearby and waits for the men to fire the rockets. They all
watch to see which rocket will go the highest. Only a few men stand near the rockets when
they fire them, because it is quite dangerous.

The men whose rockets go up the highest are very pleased. They have made the best
rocket, and maybe the villagers will have rain to grow their rice. But the men with least
successful rockets and do not go up as high as the other rockets, are not pleased. The
villagers take these men and throw them into a muddy pond!

The water cycle

Earth (0) had a limited amount of water. So, that water keeps (9) goes around. We
call it the water cycle. The water cycle begins with evaporation. Evaporation is when the
sun (10) heat up water in rivers, lakes or the ocean. Then, turns it into water vapour or
steam. The water vapour or steam leaves the body of water and goes (11) onto the air.
Transpiration is the process by which plants lose water out of their leaves. Condensation
is when water vapour in the air gets cold and changes back into water to (12) forming
clouds. Think of it this way, when you open a cold soda on a hot summer day, your soda
will (13) started to sweat as water droplets form on the outside of the can.

Precipitation occurs when so much water has (14) condensing that the air cannot
hold it anymore. This is how we get rain or snow. Collection happens when the
precipitation falls and is (15) collect back in the oceans, lakes and rivers. When it falls to
the ground, it will soak into the earth and become ground water. This is the water cycle
and (16) they just keeps repeating.

History of Bubble Tea

The famous bubble tea, created in Taichung, Taiwan in the 1980s, is a mix of milk
tea, tapioca pearls and syrup. It had gained popularity in Asia and then later across
the United States. Bubble tea is also known as “boba tea” and “zhen chu nai cha”
in Mandarin. It is a highly-caffeinated and sugary drink made from tea, milk, syrup
and its instantly noticeable large black tapioca “pearls”.

Bubble tea has become a global sensation. This beverage was first sold at the Chen
Shui Tang tea shop in the city of Taichung. The owner named Liu Han-chien sold
his well-known oolong tea. Liu wanted to change the way people drank tea, so he
experimented by putting traditional milk tea in a cocktail shaker with some ice. It
instantly became so popular and was Chun Shui Tang’s best seller.

The term “bubble tea” was then created because of the thick layer of foam that
forms on top of the drink after it is shaken. The addition of pearls or large tapioca
balls nicknamed “boba” happened in 1987, when a competition among staff
members was held to come up with a creative concoction. The store manager, Lin
Hsiu-hui, liked to eat fen yuan, or tapioca balls, so she added them to the milk tea.
The rest is history.

released CCTV footage of the incident in a bid to catch his attackers. The 19-year-old had to
have a plate inserted in his jaw after he was attacked by a stranger in Georgetown city centre
in the early hours of 11 September this year.

Georgetown Police said the victim was walking home from a night out when he was
approached by three men he did not know. One of the men can be seen punching the
teenager in the face, who then was crashed to the ground. He suffered grievous bodily harm
injuries and had to have surgery on his jaw, investigators said.

The three men then ran off leaving passers-by to run over and help the victim. One of the
passers-by tried to catch the attackers, yet he was hit on his head. They are described as
white, about 20 years old and about 6 feet tall. One of the men was wearing a black hoodie,
jeans and white trainers, another one was wearing a long-sleeved white T-shirt and black
trousers, and the third man wore a white T-shirt, jeans and a small shoulder bag.

"The CCTV highlights how just one punch can cause serious injury and have devastating
consequences," said investigating officer Lim Coffey. “The victim had to have a plate
inserted in his jaw following the assault and we are really keen to bring his attackers to
justice. The officer really hopes by releasing the video footage will prompt someone into
coming forward and provide information of the case.

Question 35 – 40
You are going to read a story about Buddha and his follower.
Six sentences have been removed from the story. Choose from the sentences (A – H) to fit each
gap (35 – 40). There are two extra sentences which you do not need to use.
For each question, mark the correct answer (A – H) on your answer sheet.

Sometimes, just let it be.

One day, Buddha was walking from one town to another town with a few of his
followers. This was in the initial days. While they were traveling, they happened to pass a
lake. They stopped there and Buddha told one of his disciples, “I am thirsty. 35

The disciple walked up to the lake. When he reached it, he noticed that some
people were washing clothes in the water. Right at that moment, a bullock cart started
crossing the lake. 36 The disciple thought, “How can I give this muddy water to
Buddha to drink?”. 37 “The water in there is very muddy. I don’t think it is fit to
drink”.

So, the Buddha said, let us take a little rest here by the tree. After about half an
hour, again Buddha asked the same disciple to go back to the lake and get him some water
to drink. 38 This time he found that the lake had absolutely clear water in it. The
mud had settled down and the water above it looked fit to be had. 39

The Buddha looked at the water, and then he looked up at the disciple and said,
“See, you let the water be and the mud settled down on its own. 40 It didn’t
require any effort. Sometimes, you just let it be.”
Adapted from https://www.moralstories.org/sometimes-just-let/

1
A As a result, the water became very muddy and turbid.

B How could you get me muddy water?

C So, he came back and told the Buddha.

D You got clear water.

E Please get me some water from that lake there.

F Thus, he collected some water in a pot and brought it to the Buddha.

G The Buddha was very mad at the disciple.

Dear Samantha,
It’s been two weeks since you moved. Everyone misses you. I hope you are (0)
adjusting well to your new school.
Life is pretty (9) the same here. Last week, Brian and I (10) just
talking about you. Remember that time when you and I (11) our school in the
swimming competition? We had to train with Coach Murphy for two months before the big
day! Every morning, we (12) by jogging three laps around the track. Then we

to perfect our swimming techniques.
The day of the competition finally arrived. In the end, we got third place. (14)
we didn’t win the gold medal, we all became much better swimmers. Coach Murphy was so
proud of what we had (15), he even organised an event for us. He always told us that
to be a great champion, compete with the best, but to be the greatest champion, compete with
yourself. Remember when we were called on stage to receive the Outstanding Swimmer award

Questions 19 to 26

Read the text carefully. Choose the best answer A, B, C or D. For each question, mark the
correct answer on your answer A, B, C or D on your answer sheet.

Today’s active adults may find their on-the-go lifestyle sometimes cause them to miss out on
important nutrients. Work, sports, children and lisure activities can have an effect on meal
preparations and eating habits. Therefore, the average diet today leaves a lot to be desired.
Research finds our meals lacking in a number of essential nutrients, including calcium,
pottasium, magnesium, and vitamins A, C and D. The need for additional food supplements has
pratically become a neccesity. The average person now eats very few helpings of fruits and
vegetables. Processed food removes the natural nutrients and replaces them with articial
supplements. The air we breathe contains incerasingly more oxidising pollutants.
That is why a variety of food supplements are in the market to help us get the
nutritional support to do our work well. These supplements can be obtained in pharmaices,
health stores and supermarkets. To be healthy, we must make sure we have a foundational
nutrition. We must give the body what it needs. The body does its best with whatever food we
feed it. Dietary supplements are products taken by mouth that contain dietary ingredients
intended to supplement the diet. The dietary ingredients in these products may include
vitamins, minerals, herbs or other botanicals, amino acids and substances such as enzymes,
organ tissues and metabolites. Dietary suppliments can also be extracts or concentrates and
may be found in many forms such as tablets, capsules, soft gels, liquids or powders.

It is important to take supplements from several different sources. It is not good to rely
on any one brand. You want to have a variety of nutritional products so that you are getting
whole food sources from three or four different manufacturers on a daily basis. This is the best
way to be sure that you are getting a full complement of fruits, vegetables, mushrooms and
other food sources that can provide peak nutrition for you. Consumers benefit from a food
supplement industry that ranks amongst the most sophisticated in the world. In the world of
holistic nutrition, we take whole food from nature that is grown organically. If we do not, then
we take superfood supplements. They are dried, ground into powder and then shaped into pills
or tablets. Superfoods that are popular in the market include spirulina, garlic, blue-green algae
and wheatgrass.
There is no doubt that we need a variety of nutrients ranging from carbohydrates,
protein, fat, vitamins, minerals and water each day to stay healthy. This includes calcium and
vitamin D to protect our bones, folic acid to produce and maintain new cells and vitamin A to
preserve a
8

healthy immune system and vision. Yet the source of these nutrients is important. Usually it is
best to try to get these nutrients from food as opposed to health supplements. Fruits,
vegetables, fish and other healthy foods contain nutrients and other substances not found in a
pill. We cannot get the same synergistic effect from a supplement.
Taking certain dietary suppliments in higher-than-recommended doses may even
interfere with nutrient absorption or cause side effects. While most of the suppliments are safe
for consumption as long as we follow the instructions and dosage, we should not take them as
we like. Getting our nutrients straight from a pill sounds easy, but supplements do not
necessarily deliver on the promise of better health. Some can even be dangerous, especially
when taken in larger-than-recommended amounts. Taking them excessively can be harmful.
For instance, an overdose of vitamin C can cause diarrhea. Another example is amino acid
supplements which are widely used bt athletes who believe that having more of these basic
building blocks available enables skeletal muscles to get stronger and have better endurance
without the added calories. However, an excess of amino acid supplements tends to cause an
imbalance of the amino acids already present in the body. Consequently, they cause fever, skin
rash, muscle and joint pains.

Questions 27 to 32
You are going to read an article about the 5G technology.
Six sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences (A to H) to fit
each gap (27 to 32). There are two extra sentences which you do not need to use.
For each question, mark the correct answer (A to H) on your answer sheet.

Understanding the Advantages of 5G

What is 5G exactly? 27 . It offers much faster data download-and-upload speeds.
Compared to 4G, 5G networks feature improvements that will have far-reaching impacts on
how people live, work, and play all over the world.
Each wireless network generation has reflected a significant increase in speed. The
benefits of 5G – the fifth generation of cellular network technology – will push far beyond 4G
LTE. 5G has the predicted speeds of up to 10Gbps, which amounts to a hundredfold increase if
compared to the speed of 4G. 28 . For example, with 4G, we need at least 10 minutes to
download a high-resolution movie at optimum speeds. However, we can download the same
movie at peak download speeds in just six seconds with 5G.
29 . In other words, latency is the time needed for a device to react to the order
given by a user. One of the goals for each wireless generation has been to reduce latency. New
5G networks will have even lower latency than 4G LTE, with the round-trip transmission of
data taking less than five milliseconds. The short latency of 5G can be applied in a wide range
of fields. 30 .
5G latency makes many previously unthinkable innovations possible and one of them is
Internet of Things (loT). 31 . These physical objects can connect and exchange data with
other devices and systems over the internet. For example, loT enables a manufacturer to
improve its manufacturing efficiency. With loT, the machines in factories can be connected,
monitored and analysed so that they can perform at their optimum levels.
In conclusion, 5G will usher in the Fourth Industrial Revolution and change the
economy. Due to the speeds and capacity that 5G network, promises to bring, it has the
potential to be an indispensable technology. It is estimated that by 2035, 5G will enable $ 12.3
trillion of global economic output and support 22 million jobs worldwide. 32
1

A It is the next generation of mobile internet connection.

B Therefore, it is essential for us to understand and embrace the technology.
C For example, in the field of medicine, a surgeon living in one country can perform a
‘tele-surgery’ on a patient living in another country by operating a surgical device
remotely.
D The United States, China, and South Korea are expected to be among the first to
install full 5G networks.
E In real life, the speed enhancements of 5G will mean exciting possibilities for
consumers.
F 5G will enable billions of new connections with speed and security.
G The Internet of Things (loT). Refers to the network of physical things, such as
machines, animals, people and computers, that are embedded with sensors, software,
and other technologies.
H Latency measures how long a signal takes to go from its source to its receiver, and
then back again.
