DCAP-5082C Rotor Grounding Protection Unit

1. Scope
DCAP-5082C generator rotor grounding protection unit, which is based on 32-bit DSP (Digital Signal
Processing) and high-speed Ethernet communication technology, is mainly used in rotor grounding-fault
protection of different generators (except brushless excitation generator).
It could accomplish rotor one or two points grounding protection utilizing bridge principle. After the
rotor one point grounding happens, the unit could memorize the grounding location, subsequently if the
other point puts to earth (namely rotor two points grounding), it could acknowledge rotor two points
grounding fault because the grounding location calculated has changed.

2. Main Functions
(1) Protective Functions
Rotor one point grounding protection
Rotor two points grounding protection
(2) 10 digital inputs, 1 DC analog input(excitation voltage ),6 digital outputs(relays)
(3) Auxiliary power supply failure alarm for the unit
(4) Time-adjust: software setting or GPS impulse setting.
(5) The unit can memory the latest 40 alarm records even after an auxiliary power supply failure.
(6) The unit has one RS-485 communication interface and one Ethernet communication interface that
are convenient to accomplish dual-network communication system.

3. Inputs and Outputs

3.1 Auxiliary Power Supply Voltage
The rated DC voltage of auxiliary power supply is DC220V or DC110V marked on the unit, and the
connecting terminals of auxiliary power supply are P+, P- respectively.
3.2 Binary Input Signals

It has 10 binary input signals. In a particular application, the user may reposition them, but the following
rules must be followed:
① Binary input signals from SI1 to SI9 can be defined for general use.
② SGP is GPS time-setting impulse input and GPS second pulse setting.
3.3 Binary Output Signals
It contains 6output signals(TS1-TS6) which correspond to 6 indication lamps on the unit front panel.
Each of them can be repositioned as a protective function(or the combination of several protective
functions)tripping signal by setting up tripping logic table. We can reposition the 6 output signals freely
in tripping logic table (Note: 1 means On and 0 Off). The 9th indication lamp stands for the normal
working of the unit.
3.4 DC Analog Input Quantity
It contains one DC analog input quantity used to collect excitation voltage, DC voltage and the details
ought to be marked on order.
3.5 Communication Interfaces
It has high-speed Ethernet and RS-485(shielded twisted wires or optical fiber)communication interfaces.
Various signals can be transmitted between the unit and the host control system through communication
network.

4. Human-Machine Interface
The front panel of the unit is made up of a 128X64 liquid crystal screen, 4 keys and the output
indication lamps. Most operations of the unit could be accomplished by operating the keys, and the

6. Protection Functions
6.1 Rotor One Point Grounding Protection
The unit has been monitoring the insulation of generator rotor to earth during running, it will calculate
the values of grounding resistance and grounding location as soon as there has been rotor grounding ( the
grounding location of which range is between 0 and 1 is the electrical distance from grounding point to
negative voltage position on rotor.) .
The criterion: the grounding resistance is less than the setting value of resistance in the one point
grounding fault.

& t

6.2 Rotor Two Points Grounding Protection

The one point grounding protection will operate on any stage rotor as soon as the rotor grounding has
happens, and then the two points grounding protection will be put into automatically, at this time it will
operate as long as the 2nd point puts to earth.
The criterion: the electrical distance between two grounding points is greater than the setting value of
grounding distance.

6.3 Operation, Alarm Reports

When the protections operate, the unit will get the fault reports; when warning events take place, it will
give the warning reports.

4
DCAP-5082C Rotor Grounding Protection Unit

Each report, which contains the event occurrence time, the voltage at that time and so on, can be
uploaded to a supervisory computer in time and saved, we can check the latest event reports at any time.
Fault or warning signals need to be reset by manual or by a supervisory computer through
communication.

7. Principle of Rotor Grounding Protection and Functional Test

7.1 The Protection Principle
When one point grounding happens and if there is any other grounding point outside rotor , it will form a
close circuit between two grounding points through the earth and generate grounding current as shown
below(there has no the rotor excitation power supply in the figure ). It could get two groups of different
grounding current parameters by transferring the state (on or off )of electronic switches S1 and S 2 ,then
the grounding resistance R g and grounding location  could be calculated in real time using the
above parameters and rotor voltage measured.
Note that it is supposed that the resistance rotor winding itself is equal to zero when computing
grounding resistance and grounding location. In fact rotor winding itself resistance almost can be
neglected compared with Rx and Rz , however, when brushless exciting way is used in the generator
rotor, it is impossible to gain real terminals U L  and U L  , namely violating the above assumption,
therefore the unit is not suitable to apply to the rotor using brushless exciting way.

The principle of rotor two points grounding protection:

When the rotor one point grounding happens, it could memorize the grounding location, after that if the
other point puts to earth (namely rotor two points grounding ), it could acknowledge rotor two points
grounding fault because the grounding location calculated has changed .
7.2 Functional Test
(It could utilize many methods as long as conforming to the protection principle and we will give a
simple method here.)
The rotor one point grounding protection test:
The connecting form as shown below, the 100Ω rheostat is used to simulate the rotor circuit, it could
calculate the operating values of protection by changing grounding resistance R g and grounding fault
.

5
DCAP-5082C Rotor Grounding Protection Unit

The rotor two points grounding protection test:

The connecting form as shown below, at first confirming grounding location  , it make the one point
grounding protection operate to change R g or R g , and then changing the grounding location  of
'

R g or R g' and exceeding the setting value ,the two points grounding protection will operate .

Besides, if only connecting with one resistance R g , the two points grounding protection will operate as
long as sliding unfixed terminal of rheostat makes  change and exceed the setting value after the one
point grounding protection has operated.
