Section – A (Short Answer type questions)
● Answer all questions: (10 x 2 =20Marks)
Unit-I
1. List the advantages of digital communication system over analog communication
system.

2. What is the necessity of Non-uniform quantization in speech coding?

3. Draw the waveforms of ASK, FSK and PSK signals for the data sequence
101101.
4. Compare ASK, BFSK and BPSK modulation techniques with respect to
Bandwidth and Euclidean distance.
Unit-III
5. A source emits one of four symbols A,B,C and D with probabilities 1/3,1/6,1/4
and 1/4 respectively. The successive symbols emitted by the source are
independent. Calculate the entropy of the source.
6. State Shannon-Hartley law.
Unit-IV
7. Write the properties of cyclic codes.
8. Define the following parameters related to convolutional codes.
(a) Code rate (b) Constraint Length

9. List the applications of spread spectrum modulation.
10. Differentiate direct sequence and frequency hopping spread spectrum modulation
techniques.

Unit-I

11. A) Draw the block diagram of digital communication system and explain about
each block.
OR
B) A television signal with a bandwidth of 4MHz is transmitted using binary
PCM.The number of quantization levels are 128.
Find (i) Code word length
(ii)Transmission Bandwidth
(iii) Signaling rate
(iv) o/p signal to quantization noise ratio.

12. A) Draw the block diagram of QPSK system and explain its working.
OR
B) Explain the operation of coherent and Non-coherent BFSK detectors with neat
diagram.
Unit-III

13. A) A DMS X has five symbols x1,x2,x3,x4 and x5 with


P(x1)=0.4,P(x2)=0.19,P(x3)=0.16,P(x4)=0.15 and P(x5)=0.1.
Construct a Shannon-Fano code for X, and calculate the efficiency of the code.
OR
B) State Shannon’s information capacity theorem and derive the expression for
limiting capacity of the channel.

14. A) The generator matrix for a (6, 3) block code is given below. Find all the code
vectors of this code.

B) For a (7, 4) cyclic code, the generator polynomial is G (p) =1+p+p3.Find the

15. A) Illustrate the functionality of frequency hopping spread spectrum modulation
with a neat diagram.
OR
B) Explain the operation of PN Sequence generator with a neat diagram.
Also write the characteristics.
