FUNCTION
LIMIT
OBJECTIVES:
The learners are expected to:
1. illustrate the concept of
a limit using a table of values
and graphs; and
2. distinguish between
𝐥𝐢𝐦 𝒇 𝒙 and f(c).
𝒙→𝒄
SKETCH ME OUT!
Graph the function defined
𝒙𝟐 − 𝟗
by 𝒇 𝒙 = using the table of
𝒙+𝟑
values below.
x -4 -3 -2 -1 0 1
y
1. Considering the graph of the function
𝒙𝟐 − 𝟗
𝒇 𝒙 = , what have you noticed when
𝒙+𝟑
x = -3?
2. What if we look at the value of the
function using the immediate
neighborhood of x = -3 (means x
approaches -3 from the left and from the
right), at to what value of y will it get
closer to?
3. Based on the example, how can we
describe the limit of a function?
𝐥𝐢𝐦− 𝒇 𝒙 = −6 𝐥𝐢𝐦+ 𝒇 𝒙 = −6

The Limit of a Function
The limit of a function
describes how a function
behaves as the independent
value gets closer to a certain
number.
Let a be a real number and f be a
function of x. We say that L is the
limit of f(x) as x approaches a when
f(x) gets closer and closer to L as x
approaches (but is not equal to) a. In
symbols, we denote this as
𝐥𝐢𝐦 𝒇 𝒙 = 𝑳
𝒙→𝒂
which is read as “the limit of f(x) as
x approaches a is equal to L”
Existence of Limit
The limit of a function f(x) exists if
and only if the one-sided limits of the
functions are equal.

LET’S TRY!
Find the limit of the function as illustrated by its graph,
and tell whether if the limit exists.
