ABSTRACT
HEALTH AND HYGIENE
Hygiene refers to behaviors that can improve
cleanliness and lead to good health, such as frequent handwashing, facial
cleanliness, and bathing with soap and water and some other personal cleanliness
and Environmental cleanliness. The present research aims to study hygienic
practices followed by the household to make society healthy. For this project my
whole team is going to select an area burdened with diseases. In that area we
found people are effected by some diseases that are occurred due to unhygienic
surroundings .And we will conduct a survey is made to find out what are the
main causes of the diseases that afflict the people and we make people aware of
this disease and care about the cleanliness of their surroundings. Individual health
and hygiene are largely dependent on adequate availability of drinking water and
proper sanitation. Therefore, a direct relationship between hygiene and health.
improper environmental sanitation and lack of personal and food hygiene have
been major causes of many diseases in developing countries and India is no
exception to this.
Hygienic is one of the basic determinants of quality of life and human
development index. The project result reveals that households are following the
hygiene practices in terms of defection and hand washing habits, water related
hygiene practices and domestic waste management and finally we will conclude
that health is directly depend on the personal and environmental hygiene .

INTRODUCTION

We conducted this community service project in our

village(gandredu). To get information from people in our locality. we prepared a
questions list separately for the survey. Our survey is about health and hygiene. Our
got the information regarding the diseases like diabetes, blood pressure, asthma,
kidney stones etc. We prepared a ppt to create awareness among people about
diseases and cleanliness of the body & the cleanliness around the surroundings and
inside their houses and also importance of balanced diet and regular check up. In the
first week of community service project we performed socio-economic survey in that
we came to know that people should have some basic knowledge about the health
and health issues & the cleanliness of the body and surroundings. So that we
decided to do project on health and hygiene.
Good health is an asset for individuals, their community’s and the nation at large. A
nation cannot progress without a healthy population. There are large numbers of
factors which effects our health. Some of these are balanced food, clean water and
clean environment which help to remain healthy while others such as germs and
stressful environment cause diseases and disorders.
Hygiene refers to behaviors that can improve cleanliness and lead to good health,
such as frequent handwashing, facial cleanliness, and bathing with soap and water
and some other personal cleanliness and Environmental cleanliness. The present
research aims to study hygienic practices followed by the household to make society

HEALTH
Health is defined as the state of complete physical, mental and social being and
the merely an absence of diseases and infirmity. Health refers to the body's natural
and healthy state. It is a great source of peace and contentment. physical health
and mental health are inter related to each other ,A pleasant mind will makes a
physical body good Health, according to the World Health Organization, is "a
state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the
absence of disease and infirmity".
A variety of definitions have been used for different purposes over time. Health
can be promoted by encouraging healthful activities, such as regular physical
exercise and adequate sleep, and by reducing or avoiding unhealthful activities or
situations, such as smoking or excessive stress.
Some factors affecting health are due to individual choices, such as whether to
engage in a high-risk behaviour, while others are due to structural causes, such as
whether the society is arranged in a way that makes it easier or harder for people
to get necessary healthcare services. Still, other factors are beyond both individual
and group choices, such as genetic disorders.

[5]
TYPES OF HEALTH

 PHYSICAL HEALTH

Physical health refers to the state of your physical body and how well it is operating.
It is influenced by levels of physical activity, adequate nutrition, rest, environments,
etc.

Physical health promotes proper care of our bodies for optimal health and
functioning. Obtaining an optimal level of physical wellness allows you to nurture
personal responsibility for your own health. As you become conscious of your
physical health, you are able to identify elements you are successful in as well as
elements you would like to improve.

Physical health consists of many components, but a brief list of the key areas are
given below:

 Physical activity – includes strength, flexibility, and endurance.

 Nutrition and diet – includes nutrient intake, fluid intake, and healthy digestion.
 Alcohol and drugs – includes the abstinence from or reduced consumption of
these substances.
 Medical self-care – includes addressing minor ailments or injuries and seeking
emergency care as necessary.
 Rest and sleep – includes periodic rest and relaxation, along with high-quality
sleep.

[6]
 MENTAL HEALTH
Mental health is a level of psychological well-being or an absence of mental illness. It
is the “psychological state of someone who is functioning at a satisfactory level of
emotional and behavioural adjustment”.

Good mental health doesn’t just mean if you don’t have a mental illness. It’s about
having a sense of purpose, getting involved with things, coping with stress and
setbacks, forming close relationships, and being in touch with your own thoughts
and emotions. To maintain mental health we have to be confident and accept
ourselves. In this case, yoga and breathing exercises help us to focus and keep
negative thoughts out of our minds.

What causes mental illness?

There is no single cause for mental illness. A number of factors can contribute to risk
for mental illness, such as

 Early adverse life experiences, such as trauma or a history of abuse.

 Experiences related to other ongoing (chronic) medical conditions, such as cancer
or diabetes.
 Biological factors or chemical imbalances in the brain.
 Use of alcohol or drugs.
 Having feelings of loneliness or isolation.

[7]
 SOCIAL HEALTH

Social health is how you get along with other people, which involves your ability to
form satisfying interpersonal relationships with others. It also relates to your ability
to adapt comfortably to different social situations and act appropriately in a variety
of settings.

If you want to really optimize your health, you need to go beyond physical and
mental strength and actually look at the strength of your close social relationships.
Research now shows that a lack of strong social ties puts you at a greater health risk
than obesity.

If we really want to understand human thriving, the social component is essential.

There is 80 years long Harvard study done on individuals that showed the quality of
close social relationships was actually the best victor of health and happiness. So not
only it’s important to consider the health of our bodies but we need to consider the
health of our communities.

[8]
 ENVIORNMENTAL HEALTH

Environmental Health is the field of science that studies how the environment
influences human health and disease. “Environment,” in this context, means things
in the natural environment like air, water, and soil, and also all the physical,
chemical, biological, and social features of our surroundings.

According to the National Institute of Environmental Health Science, The social

environment encompasses lifestyle factors like diet and exercise, socioeconomic
status, and other societal influences that may affect health.

We need to be aware of the impact of changing the environment of our health, how
it can be influenced, and what can cause the complex diseases such as cancer,
cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome within malaria, TV, AIDS, etc. and how
our environment influenced to contract these diseases.

[9]
 SPIRITUAL HEALTH

Spiritual health refers to possessing, meaning, and purpose in life; having a clear set
of beliefs and living in accordance with your morals, values, and ethics. Essentially it
means understanding and having a clear definition of what is right and wrong and
living according to this understanding.

The National Wellness Institute says spiritual wellness follows the following tenets:

 It is better to ponder the meaning of life for ourselves and to be tolerant of the
beliefs of others than to close our minds and become intolerant.
 It is better to live each day in a way that is consistent with our values and beliefs
than to do otherwise and feel untrue to ourselves.

Many factors play a part in defining spirituality – religious faith, beliefs, values,
ethics, principles, and morals. Some gain spirituality by growing in their personal
relationships with others, or through being at peace with nature. Spirituality allows
us to find the inner calm and peace needed to get through whatever life brings, no
matter what one’s beliefs are or where they may be on your spiritual journey.

The human spirit is the most neglected aspect of our selves. Just uas we exercise to
condition our bodies, a healthy spirit is nurtured by purposeful practice. The spirit is
the aspect of ourselves that can carry us through anything. If we take care of our
spirit, we will be able to experience a sense of peace and purpose even when life
deals us a severe blow. A strong spirit helps us to survive and thrive with grace,
even in the face of difficulty.

We should take care of our spirit to experience a sense of peace and purpose even
when life deals with some difficulty. A strong spirit only helps us to survive and
thrive with grace

[10]
HYGIENE
Hygiene refers to good practices like cleanliness, adequate wastewater disposal,
and safe drinking water supply that help to avoid disease and promote good
health. Maintaining hygienic practices may leads to good health.
Hygiene is a series of practices performed to preserve health. According to
the World Health Organization (WHO), "Hygiene refers to conditions and
practices that help to maintain health and prevent the spread of
diseases." Personal hygiene refers to maintaining the body's cleanliness.
Hygiene activities can be grouped into the following: home and everyday hygiene,
personal hygiene, medical hygiene, sleep hygiene and food hygiene. Home and
every day hygiene includes hand washing, respiratory hygiene, food hygiene at
home, hygiene in the kitchen, hygiene in the bathroom, laundry hygiene and
medical hygiene at home.

[11]
TYPES OF HYGIENE
 PERSONAL HYGIENE
Personal hygiene which involves the cleanliness of one’s body and clothing, proper
living habits, healthy diet, rest, and exercise, basically means cleanliness of your
body. Good personal hygiene means keeping all parts of the physical body clean and
healthy. It is an essential part of maintaining both physical and mental health. In
people who practice poor personal hygiene, the body offers a perfect environment
for the growth of germs, hence leaving it vulnerable to infection.

The main goal of personal hygiene is to improve or enhance personal standards of

cleanliness, within people’s living conditions. Some of the personal hygiene practices
include bathing, washing clothes, washing hands, proper use of the toilet, caring for
the teeth, nails, feet, personal grooming, maintaining good practices when either
spitting, sneezing, or coughing, and inculcating clean habits at a young age.

On a social level, people tend to avoid a person with poor personal hygiene, hence
resulting in isolation and loneliness.

[12]
 ENVIRONMENTAL HYGIENE

The aim of environmental hygiene is to create safe spaces so as to prevent diseases.

In general, environmental hygiene involves disinfection activities (to control the
harmful organisms and bacteria that threaten health), rodent control, disinfestation,
and fumigation activities. When the environment is polluted with toxic
waste through either spitting or vomiting.

The State is accountable for the respective cleaning of the environment using
companies that are in the field of environmental hygiene. This way, children and
other people who use the same street are prevented from falling ill due to exposure
to such waste. Environmental hygiene takes care of the health of both current and
future generations.

[13]
 DOMESTIC HYGIENE

Domestic hygiene which involves cleanliness, the sanitary preparation of food, and
ventilation, generally means cleanliness in homes. Domestic hygiene practices
include all the work done to keep people’s clothes, beddings, and houses clean.
These activities include washing clothes and beddings, cleaning the toilet, sweeping
and cleaning floors, and washing dishes after meals.

It is important to keep the house clean so that it remains a healthy place. In the case
where the house and things in it are not often cleaned, dirt and moisture accumulate,
making the house ideal for the breeding of parasites, germs, and disease-carrying
animals. These germs can cause infection or sickness to the people living in the
house. Domestic hygiene also entails the use of soap, proper ventilation, fresh air,
hygiene in food storage, proper waste disposal, and keeping away household pests,
rats, and insects.

[14]
 FOOD HYGIENE
One of the greatest risks to the health of a population is contaminated food. It is a
leading cause of disease outbreaks and transmission. Food that is kept for too long
contains pathogens or toxic chemicals whereas foodstuffs that are consumed raw,
such as vegetables and fruits, can get contaminated by flies, dirty hands, or unclean
water. Food that has been improperly prepared can also lead to chemical poisoning.
For instance, improperly pounded and cooked cassava leaves may contain
dangerous cyanide levels. Therefore, to promote good health, food should be
prepared and stored properly.

Any facility where food is prepared or served for public consumption must adhere
to the set hygiene practices by health regulating agencies. These systems are put in
place to regulate the general environment where food is prepared, the methods used
to prepare and serve it, how the food is stored, and the personal employee hygiene
standards. Required equipment for food hygiene includes stainless steel surfaces for
the preparation of food and cooking utensils. These regulations also include specific
standards for water and food temperatures and the required sanitation systems for
disinfecting and cleaning utensils and surfaces.
To learn more with regard to good hygiene and sanitation practices, enroll for
our Diploma level course of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene today.

POOR HYGIENE DISEASES

A disease is any disturbance in normal physiology of body due to internal or

external environment. Nowadays, the poor hygiene is the most significant cause of
diseases and even death in under developed countries. We will discuss some of the
common poor hygiene diseases .

The most common poor hygiene diseases include food poisoning, gastroenteritis,
diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting, nausea, skin infections, trachoma, pneumonia,
malaria and many more resulting from bacterial infections. Among the viral invasive
diseases due to poor hygiene include cold, flu, hepatitis A, gastroenteritis etc. Apart
from bacteria and viruses, other parasites also cause certain common diseases
including scabies infection , hookworm and thread worm infection and pediculosis.
Some of these above mentioned diseases are even fatal for example malaria was a
serial killer in previous century caused by malaria but its fatality is under control
now after the discovery of antibacterial drugs.

Poor hygiene is the main source for the development of these diseases. Hygiene is
further classified in to domestic and personal categories. Poor domestic hygiene
includes unclean environment. Unclean washrooms, use of unclean clothes and
standing water in and outside house. Malaria is spread by mosquitoes that usually
breed in standing water.

Personal hygiene refers to a persons habits i.e eating unhealthy food, drinking
unclean water, use of unsterilized utensils etc. All these unhygienic allow the
microorganisms to breed within the unhygienic environment and produces multiple
copies of themselves. These copies in turn invade human body and interface with
body functions resulting in a diseases. As every disease is dangerous it must be
treated to bring the functions back to normal and as we know the best treatment is to
take early precautions towards the conditions that cause disease.

1.Food poisoning

[16]
Reason:
Food poisoning is the outcome of having stale food or rotten food.
Effects :
Food poisoning leads to vomiting at times spitting out blood, loose
motions ,extreme sweating, choking of the wind pipe ,extreme
stomach ache etc. So it is advisable to never have street food

2.Acidity

Reason:
Having food that has too much oil.
Effects:
It is a burning sensation in the gut and in the chest at times. It can
further lead to peptic ulcers and mouth ulcers if not treated. This
raises the stomach pH and gives a restless and burning sensation

3.Body Odor

[17]
Reason:
Having street food can lead to adrastic body odour.
Effects:
Street food increases the toxin contents in the body, causing
bad odour from the body. So avoid street foods and detox
your body with plenty of water and fruits.

4.Acne

Reason:
Having junk food can develop and increase acne.
Effects:
The junk food contains a lot of oil and artificial flavourings and
colours which stimulate the sebaceous glands to secrete more than
normal sebum which causes acne.

5.Halitosis

[18]
Halitosis, popularly known as bad breath, is a disease of the mouth that causes
foul breath. In this condition, unpleasant odor comes out of the mouth of the
patient.
Reason:
Certain foods, adverse health conditions and unhygienic habits are
the main causes of bad breath.
Effects:
Bad breath

6.Asthma

Asthma is a disease affecting the airways that carry air to and from your lungs.
People who suffer from this chronic condition (long-lasting or recurrent) are said to
be asthmatic.
Reason:
Asthma has been found to be in higher abundance in homes where
there are cockroach infestations.
Effects:
The inside walls of an asthmatic's airways are swollen or inflamed.
This swelling or inflammation makes the airways extremely sensitive

[19]
to irritations and increases your susceptibility to an allergic reaction.

6.Diarrhoea

Reason:
A change in environment, especially to a place with less-than-optimal
sanitary conditions, may result in traveler’s diarrhoea. This condition is
caused by eating or drinking something unclean or contaminated.
Effects :

o it persists for more than a few days

o it’s accompanied by severe dehydration

o you have bloody or severe diarrhoea

o you have persistent vomiting

9.Maleria

Reason:

Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by parasites that are

[20]
transmitted to people through the bites of infected female Anopheles
mosquitoes. It is preventable and curable.

Effects:
fever, tiredness, vomiting, and headaches. In severe cases, it can
cause jaundice, seizures, coma, or death.

TRADITIONAL WAYS TO MAINTAIN CLEANLINESS
AND HYGIENE

To maintain cleanliness and hygiene at home or your workplace should not be an

issue when you know how to do it right. Cleanliness and Hygiene must be
maintained if you want to live a healthy and hygienic life. There is a famous
proverb, ‘health is wealth’; which means, if you are healthy then you are wealthy.
Health is most important and if you are healthy, you can lead a happy life. You can
enjoy good health if you maintain cleanliness and hygiene at home and your
workplace.

There are so many new diseases that are invading the human kind, and it is high
time that you do not compromise with the hygiene of your home. Maintaining
cleanliness and Hygiene is important and for that there are some good habits that
need to be followed.

Tips to maintain cleanliness and hygiene

It is your duty to make a clean and hygienic environment at home to lead a healthy,
happy and enjoyable life. And as they say, precaution is always better than cure, and
you can take necessary precautions to guard yourself against several deadly diseases
which may be caused due to unhygienic environment.

Whether you are living in one of the condo suits at 25 Mabelle condos or at any other
upscale and luxurious apartments, if the space is not thoroughly cleaned and
organized, it’s not going to give you the comfort and ambience for living happily.
Irrespective of whether you use cleaning services from a housekeeping agency or do
it yourself, here are some of the best ways to maintain cleanliness and hygiene at
home.
1. Do not leave buckets of water or opened container with water in or near your
home, as these places serve as perfect environment for breeding mosquitoes
causing fatal diseases.

[22]
2. Clean the ceiling and the walls to remove spider webs.
3. Do not forget to clean the blades of the fans as well.
4. Dusting the carpets before you place them on the floor is needed.
5. Wash the sofa covers and the cushions at regular intervals, like you can change
them monthly.
6. Clean the dust coating from the appliances and the furniture.
7. Sometimes, crumbs of food items can fall on the sofa or couch when you eat
there. Make sure you clean them immediately.
8. The rooms must have enough windows to make entry of sun rays. Sunlight can
kill millions of germ particles.
9. If you have fish bowl, then change the water on a regular interval.
10. Vacuum clean, sweep, or mop the floors regularly, doing it each day is
preferable.
11. If you have pets, then the rooms may get dirtier due their hairs or furs; make sure
to clean that too.
12. If you have kids at your home, then keeping the room is of primary importance.
13. Change the curtains too as they tend to get dirty because they come in contact
with the outside pollution.
14. Always cover the foods with covers, do not keep them open, as foods attract
several bugs like cockroaches.
15. Check the drainage system, to avoid water logging in bathroom and also kitchen.
16. Repair the pipes and the taps, if you see that they are leaking
17. Wash the plates after you have your meal, unwashed plates are the dens of
germs.
18. Clean the oil stains and the greasy sticky pans with washing soap, use less oil
which is good for health and also the kitchen.
19. Always use lid while cooking, cooking in pressure cooker is helpful.
20. Make sure the chopping board, the knife, and the kitchen counters are cleaned
properly before you use them.
21. Wash the veggies before you cut them.
22. Exhaust fans or kitchen vents are must to get rid of vapors and smells.
23. Place trash cans in kitchen, and empty it after use.

[23]
24. Installing an aqua guard or a water purifier is always advisable.
25. Not only the water has to be purified, but also the containers where you will
store water have to be clean.
26. Your kitchen should have at least one window for ventilation.
27. Keep your pets away from the kitchen space.
28. The kitchen vents or the exhaust fans have to be cleaned within regular intervals
as they get very dirty due to regular use. You can do servicing or clean these
appliances by calling professionals.
29. Use kitchen cleaners to clean the kitchen space, as it is found in several cases that
the visibly clean areas are contaminated by germs.
30. Ensure that the kitchen smells nice; you can use lemon extract or vinegar for this.
31. Wash your hands well before you prepare food, and also before you eat it.
32. Proper ventilation in bathroom is must.
33. Clean the bathroom regularly, if not every day, then very frequently.
34. Moisture causes mild dew in the bathroom, and from there several germs can
appear.
35. Clean the bathroom in hot water, hot water helps in killing all the germs like
bacteria.
36. The drainage should be efficient in bathroom, water logging must be avoided.
37. The water that you use in home for daily chores is stored in overhead tank. Clean
the overhead tank, at least once or twice the year. Food poisoning may cause if
the water is not clean.
38. Clean and then dry the towels of your bathroom. Dry the towels for few minutes
before you go to bed. Then in the morning you can get fresh towels.
39. If there are some small holes by the door or windows, then seal the holes
immediately. Pests like ants or cockroaches can enter your home through these.
40. To maintain hygiene at home, you must also clean yourself. Germs can enter
your home by various means, and you may be the carrier of germs. So
maintaining personal hygiene is also necessary.
41. If you are a smoker, then do not smoke inside your home, go outside in the
garden or balcony to smoke. The people around you who do not smoke can find
it very

[24]
What are Healthy Habits?
Healthy habits are things you do daily, frequently, or routinely that have a positive
impact on your physical and mental well-being. Habits form over time from
repeating the same routines and behaviours. Eventually, they become things you do
by default or subconsciously without having to think them through. Developing
positive habits such as eating healthy and exercising helps protect you from chronic
physical and mental problems. You'll feel and function better and get closer to
achieving a better work-life balance.
According to a 2009 study by the European Journal of Social Psychology, it could
take between 18 and 254 days to form a new habit. Having the right mindset
and sticking to the habit can shorten the timeframe.

Healthy Habits for a Healthier Lifestyle :

You can literally transform your life by changing the way you
eat, sleep, work, treat yourself, or deal with personal relationships. All you have to
do is to follow set routines, be disciplined, and be patient until they become a
natural part of your everyday life.

Healthy Eating Habits:

1. Eat breakfast every day

Breakfast is the “most important meal of the day.” You need it to replenish the
supply of glucose your body lost overnight. A healthy morning meal provides the
nutrients needed for your brain and body to function well.

Wake up early, so you'll have enough time to prepare your meal. Make a healthy
breakfast consisting of grains, e.g., oats, proteins, e.g., eggs, fruits, vegetables, and
dairy, such as fat-free yogurt.

2. Eat whole foods

Eating whole foods can help correct nutritional deficiencies that arise from eating
too much fast food. They have a higher nutritional value than processed foods, e.g.,
[25]
wheat bread, and can lower the risk of diabetes and other chronic diseases. Stock up
on whole grains, fruits, vegetables, milk, yogurt, lean meats like chicken and fish,
legumes, nuts, and seeds.

3. Have a “no-meat” day

Meat is packed with proteins and is a healthy part of your diet. Too much meat,
especially red meats like beef, can increase the risk of high cholesterol and heart
disease. Choose a day of the week you won’t eat meat, e.g. Fridays. Substitute it by
adding more greens to your plate, such as spinach.

4. Increase water intake

Drinking plenty of water helps remove toxins from your body and replenishes fluids
lost through sweat and urine. Water also optimizes the movement of nutrients and
oxygen to your cells. Drink 8 glasses of water a day, as recommended by doctors, to
stay hydrated and keep your body and joints functioning well.

5. Reduce sugar intake.

Stop adding sugar to your tea, coffee, or cereal. Consider zero-calorie sugar
substitutes such as Stevia. Remove foods high in sugars from your daily diet such as
sodas, fruit juices, cakes, and puddings.

6. Quit snacking in between meals

Snacking in between meals can cause unwanted weight gain, especially if you
consume those that are considered junk foods, e.g., chips, cookies, and sodas. Eat a
solid breakfast to prevent adding extra calories to your diet and stave off hunger and
cravings in between meals. If you need to boost energy, opt for a healthy snack such
as a protein bar.

7. Stop binge eating

Binge eating is consuming a lot of food when you’re not hungry and in one sitting.
Doing this regularly can lead to weight gain or an eating disorder if it’s done to cope

[26]
with emotional distress. Develop the habit of eating fiber-rich meals and drinking a
lot of water to curb overeating. Also, keep a journal to track moods that trigger food
cravings.

8. Remove soda from your diet

Sodas are sugar-filled drinks that generally do not contain nutrients and do nothing
more than increase your calorie intake. Opt for unsweetened beverages or 100% fruit
juices. Limit the replacement beverage to 1-2 servings a day. Grab bottled
water instead of reaching for a soda, even if it’s a ‘diet’ soda.

9. Read food labels

Know what’s in the foods you consume. Take a few minutes to read the nutrition
content and ingredients they contain. Some foods contain substances that can trigger
allergies or otherwise make you sick. Watch for sneaky marketing strategies like
100% fruit juice “from concentrate” to avoid consuming artificial sugars.

Healthy Exercise Habits

10. Keep yourself active

You don’t have to be gym-bound to exercise. Keeping your body moving is
considered exercise. Physical movement increases blood circulation, burns calories,
and helps maintain heart health. Take the stairs up instead of the elevator or get up
and move around your office every 30 minutes.

11. Exercise at least three times a week

A formal exercise routine is another healthy exercise habit to build. Regular exercise
strengthens your muscles, reduces the risk of diabetes and heart disease, and helps
manage weight. Choose something you’re comfortable with, whether it’s jogging
outdoors, running on a treadmill, stair climbing on an elliptical machine, swimming,
or aerobics.

[27]
12. Get outdoors for short walks
Walking is a simple and quick way to relieve tension and stress. Taking a 30-minute
early morning walk daily is a great way to boost your energy for the day. Following
your lunch break or after work is fine if a morning walk routine isn’t practical. What
matters is getting some form of exercise and mental relaxation on those walks.

13. Track your steps with a fitness device

I bought a step-tracking watch to count my steps daily and chart calories burned.
A wearable step tracker helps you to be more active. You can also use it to help
maintain your weight. Shoot for the popular daily goal of 10,000 steps or set a higher
goal. Activate the built-in alarm that lets you know it’s time to get stepping.

14. Do yoga
Yoga is a popular way to engage in low-impact exercise and can be as effective for
weight management as formal gym exercise routines. Get yourself a yoga mat for
comfort on the floor. Select a yoga program you could follow along at home or take
yoga classes at a yoga center. Remember to warm up to get your heart and muscles
ready for downward dog and other poses.

15. Dance for 30 minutes a day

Fast-paced dancing for 10 minutes three times a day is a fun way to increase your
step count and burn calories. Dancing burns calories fast and is good for lung and
heart health, building stamina, and keeping fit. Step into comfortable dancing shoes
and get moving to the beat of fast-paced, upbeat music. You’ll start sweating in no
time.

Healthy Sleep Habits

[28]
16. Set a sleep and wake schedule
Use your phone or another device to set a sleep-wake schedule. That way
you’ll consistently go to bed and wake up at a specific time. Try to get at least 6-9
hours of sleep. 6-9 hours of unbroken sleep helps prevent sleep deprivation,
according to the Sleep Foundation.

17. Don’t drink coffee before bed

I get it. You ‘run’ on coffee as so many other Americans do. As much as you feel like
you can’t survive without your cup of Joe, you have to have an end time for caffeine
consumption.

18. Eat hours before bedtime

Eating just before bed doesn’t give you an opportunity to burn off calories. Other
risks include gaining weight or developing chronic digestive conditions such as acid
reflux and heartburn. Practice eating your last meal of the day about three hours
before bed. This gives your body time to digest it. Eat a few slices of apple if hunger
takes over, but don’t make it a habit.

19. Unwind before bed

Optimize sleep by getting yourself mentally prepared. Relax in your recliner and
watch a show that makes you laugh. Read a book or meditate. As sleep nears, dim
your lights, put on sleep music, then lie down. Breathe gently and allow your body
to relax. Focus on your breath to prevent your mind from wandering to negativity
and allow your body to drift off into slumberland.

20. Put away electronics ahead of bedtime

You have to set boundaries with your electronic devices if you want to have the best
night’s ZZZ. Blue light from these devices interferes with the body’s release of
melatonin, a hormone that makes you feel drowsy. End screen time with your TV.
