2. Motivation

Let's have an activity before we

start our session. The activity is named as
"Solve me to get the password." I’ll divide
you into 2 groups. Each group must
choose 3 representatives. The game is
composed of 3 stages. Wherein the
participants can’t proceed to the next stage
if they can’t get the correct answer.

Are you ready? Okay you may start in Yes Ma’am!

3,2,1 go….

(after the activity)

How is your activity? Fun and enjoyable Ma’am.

What do you observe when you already

know the exact answer of the missing It has a patterns
term?

Okay your observation is correct. It has

patterns.

3. Lesson Proper
A. Introduction

Now at this moment we are going to

discuss about geometric sequence.

Another simple way of generating a

sequence is to start with a number “a” and
repeatedly multiply it by a fixed nonzero
constant “r”. This type of sequence is
called geometric sequence.

B. Presentation

Geometric sequence state that if the ratio

of any term to the one that precedes is the
same of all terms, then r, the common ratio
is that value.

For example, I have a sequence which is

2, 4, 8, 16, 32, ……..

Is it a geometric sequence or not?

Student 1 answer: Geometric
Why? Why not? sequence ma’am

It is geometric sequence because

they have the common ratio which is
Since, the ratio between each term and the 2.
one that it precedes, it is 2 for all the terms
therefore, it is a geometric sequence and
the common ratio is r=2.

How about this sequence?

Student 2: no ma’am the ratio is not
1, 2, 5, 7, 9, ……... the same for all the terms, so it’sS
not a geometric sequence.
So, a geometric sequence is a sequence
of the form a, ar, ar 2 , ar 3 ,ar 4,………. nth

Where:

a= 1st term

r= common ratio

nth=a n=¿ar n−1

¿

n= term position

How about if the first term is missing? How

can we find it?
Let’s have an example;

 The second term of a geometric

sequence is 4, and the fifth term is
32. Find the first term.

Since a 2 =4 and a 5= 32, we substituste

them in nth term formula to get

Equation 1;

4= a 1 r

Equation 2;

32=a 1 r 4

that we can solve for the value of r

4
a1 r 32
=
a1 r 4

3
r =8

r= √3 8

r= 2

Now we can solve for the value of the

first term by substituting the value of r
to either equation 1 or 2.

a 1r=4

a 1(2) = 4

a 1= 2

So, 2 is our 1st term

Now it is possible to write the standard
formula than we can find any term in the
geometric sequence. In particular we want
to find the ninth term of the geometric
sequence by letting n=9 and simplifying it.

a n= 2 ( 2 )n−1

a 9= 2(2)9−1

= 2 ( 2 )8

= 2(256)

= 512

Another example

 Generate a geometric sequence

with 5 terms such that each term is
half the previous term. Answers may
vary.

So, we can express it algebraically as

a
a, or 2a, a
2

Right?
Yes ma’am

If we pick 48 as our first term, we multiply it

by ½ to produce the second term. To
generate the third term, multiply the
second term ½, and so on.

So, any volunteer?

Ma’am!
Yes, Ms. Jolina

If you’re done, kindly explain your answer

Yes Ma’am

(Jolina answer)

a 1=48

a 2=48( 12 )=24
a =24 ( )=12
1
3
2

a =12 ( )=6
1
4
2
1
a 5=6( )=3
2

Since our 1st term is 48, I multiplied

it by ½ in order to get the half of it
which is 24 as my 2nd term. Then
multiplied 24 by ½ which results to
12 as my 3rd term. Again by
multiplying the 3rd term by the ratio
which is ½, I got the 4th term which
is 6. Finally I completed the 5 terms
by multiplying the 4th term also by ½
which is 3 as my 5th term.
So I have now my 5 terms geometric
sequence which is 48, 24, 12, 6, 3.
Okay that’s right.

Any question or clarification?

If none let’s try this. None so far

C. Guided Practice
Answer this problem on your paper
then later I called someone to
answer on the board
1.) Determine when the sequence is
geometric. If it is geometric, find the
common ratio.
a. 3, 12, 48, 192 ,….
b. 48, 24, 12, 6 ,…
2.) Write the geometric sequence with
5 terms if the first term is 0.5 and
common ratio 6.

Okay so letter a

Then what’s the common ratio?

Geometric Ma’am
Okay as you can see the given
consecutive terms is 5 and it’s easy for you Obviously 4 Ma’am
to get the common ratio between them,
right?
Yes Ma’am
How about letter b?

Also is geometric ma’am and its

Okay, correct! common ratio is ½ since every term
is half of its predecessor.
Another problem number 2
Please read..

So oh I know it’s easy for you. What are

you going to do? Reading

So here, you can use the formula of the

nth term by the given ratio in order for you
to get the second term and soon according
to the geometric sequence until you
already get the 5 terms.

So any volunteers?

Yes Rendon please write your answer on

the blackboard.
Ma’am!
(Raising their hands)

2). a 1= 0.5
a 2=0.5 ( 6 ) =3
a 3= 3 (6) =18
a 4=18(6) =108
a 5= 108 (6) = 648
Therefore, the geometric sequence
that satisfies the condition is 0.5, 3,
Okay that’s correct 18, 108, 648

How about others? Are you with me?

Okay it seems you’re all ready for the Yes Ma’am!

activity, now it’s your turn.

D. Independent Practice

Answer this on your seats and later on I’ll

be calling someone to answer on the
blackboard.

Determine the indicated terms below using

the geometric sequence formula.

1. The first term is 3, find the sixth term Student 1 answer: 96

if the common ratio is 2.
2. Find the tenth term of the geometric Student 2 answer: -0.01
sequence below.
1, -0.6, 0.36, -0.216,….
3. Find the eight term if the second Student 3 answer : 6,561
term is 9 and the fifth term is 243.

Okay class.
Are you done answering?

(calling student randomly to answer)
