CONVERGENT PLATE
BOUNDARY
CONVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARY
• Colliding or Destructive Plate Boundary
• Occurs when two plates push against each other.
While one plate dives beneath another, the crust is
destroyed and recycled back into the earth's interior.
• Continental to Continental
• Oceanic to Oceanic
• Oceanic to Continental
CONVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARY
• Subduction Zone - the area where tectonic plates dive
beneath other plates into the earth's interior.
• Convergent Plate Boundary can form mountains,
volcanos, and subduction zone that can form large
trenches.
CONVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARY
CONVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARY
CONVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARY
Examples:
Trench
• Mariana Trench in the Atlantic Ocean
Mountains
• Himalaya Mountains in Central Asia
• Western Andes Mountains in South America
• Northern Cascade Mountains in the Pacific Northwest
America
DIVERGENT PLATE
BOUNDARY
DIVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARY
• Constructive Boundary
• Occurs when two tectonic plates move away from each
other. Along these boundaries, earthquakes are
common and magma (molten rock) rises from the
Earth’s mantle to the surface, solidifying to create new
oceanic crust.
• Divergent Plate Boundary can form rift valleys, oceanic
trenches, and underwater mountain ranges.
CONVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARY
DIVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARY
• Mid Atlantic Ridge and East Africa Rift Valley are
example of divergent plate boundary.
TRANSFORM PLATE
BOUNDARY
TRANSFORM PLATE BOUNDARY
• Is a zone between two plates that slides horizontally
past one another.
• Transform boundary neither creates nor destroys a
crust, hence it is also called conservative boundary.
• Oceanic fracture zones - occur in seafloor
• Faults - occurs in land
• e. g. San Andreas Fault
