SAMPLE PROBLEMS

1. Consider the water flowing through converging channel as shown and

discharging freely to the atmosphere at the exit. What is the gage pressure at the
inlet? Assume the flow to be incompressible and neglect any frictional effects.
SAMPLE PROBLEMS
2. Given the following venture meter and two pressure shown, calculate the mass
flow rate of water in the circular pipe.
SAMPLE PROBLEMS
3. For the 100 − 𝑚𝑚 − 𝑑𝑖𝑎𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟 suction
pipe leading to a pump shown in figure
1, the pressure at point A in the suction
pipe is a vacuum of 180 𝑚𝑚 of mercury.
If the discharge is 0.0300 𝑚3⁄𝑠𝑒𝑐 of oil (𝑠
= 0.85), find the total energy head at
point A with respect to a datum at the
pump.
SAMPLE PROBLEMS
4. Water flows through the turbine in
figure at the rate of 0.214 𝑚3⁄𝑠 and the
pressures at A and B, respectively, are
147.5 𝑘𝑃𝑎 and −34.5 𝑘𝑃𝑎. Determine the
power delivered to the turbine by the
water.
Problem Set
1. For the Venturi meter shown in Fig. 7-13, the
deflection of mercury in the differential gage is
14.3 in. Determine the flow of water through the
meter if no energy is lost between A and B.

2. A 150-mm pipe carries 0.0813 m3/s of water. The

pipe branches into two pipes, one 50 mm in
diameter and the other 100 mm in diameter. If the
velocity in the 50-mm pipe is 12.2m/s, what is the
velocity in the 100-mm pipe?
Problem Set
3. For the turbine of Problem 7.32, if 48.8 kW are
extracted while the pressure gages at A and B are
reading 141.3 kPa and -33.1 kPa respectively, how
much water is flowing?
Problem Set

4. Oil with a specific gravity of 0.87 is flowing in the pipe shown in Fig. 7-21.
The pressure at point 1 is 500 kPa. If the head loss from point 1 to point 2 is
5.00 m of oil and the discharge of the oil is 0.050 m3/s, determine the pressure
at point 2.

5. A 300-mm pipe carries oil of sp gr 0.812 at a rate of 0.111 m3/s, and the
pressure at a point A is 18.4 kPa gage. If point A is 1.89 m above the datum
plane, calculate the energy at A.
