1.4 Definitions

Stress supports The stress supports are the piping supports whose function and
positioning are chosen on the basis of the flexibility requirements of the
piping, coming from the stress analysis verification calculations. Are to
be considered as stress supports: spring supports, stops, anchors,
supports on PTFE, saddles for large-diameter piping and shock
absorbers.
Non stress The non stress supports are the piping supports which are not
supports positioned and chosen on the basis of the flexibility requirements, but
with the purpose of maintaining the stresses due to the piping’s own
weight and to any external loads within the limit sets in the reference
standards. Are considered as “non-stress supports”: supports or
hangers foreseen to limit the sag of the piping, guides to keep the piping
in its own way, auxiliary supports for maintenance.
Standard supports The standard supports are all supports that can be defined according to
the standards STD.TP.SUP.5920 and STD.TP.SUP.5925.
Project standard The project standard supports are the standardised supports not
supports included in the standards STD.SUP.5920 and STD.TP.SUP.5925, but
foreseen in a specification issued for the project.
Special supports The special supports are the supports not realised according to the
standards STD.TP.SUP.5920/5925 but according to the project
standardisation, thus requiring their own drawing for the construction
and erection.
Large size They are the supports made by structures, posts, frames and structure
supports extensions. They can be constructed as follows:
a) As standard parts in accordance with STD.TP.SUP.5920/5925;
b) As special supports.
When these supports are extension of other structures or are structures
which require more than two foundations and are used repeatedly (e.g.
posts for blow down headers in the off-sites), it will established for each
project, whether they are to be considered as steel structures of CIV
competence rather than piping supports of TUB competence.
Logical supports Supports shown in the 3D model with the logical data only (position,
code, characteristic dimensions).
Physical supports Supports shown in the 3D model with their physical shape complete with
all their components with dimensions, in addition to the logical data
(position, code, characteristic dimensions).
Temporary Supports that can be dismantled and foreseen only to support the
supports piping temporary loads during the construction and/or testing, to be
removed before the plant mechanical completion.
Slug forces Forces that may be generated inside the pipe when the transported fluid
is in mixed phase (liquid + gas).

3. DESIGN OF SUPPORT SYSTEMS CRITERIA

The support systems design consists of the selection and positioning of simple or compound
supports, normally of Standard type, with the aim of:
a) creating a system of constraints for each piping system in accordance with the stress
verification; if not otherwise required for the project it will be in accordance with the design
criteria PRG.TP.CAL.0009;
b) distribute the loads due to piping weight;
c) keeping the stresses due to own weight and external loads within the reference codes
limits;
d) keeping the pipes into their own ways;
e) avoiding excessive distance between the supports that cause excessive sag of piping on
span, thus creating pockets which, in some cases, could be hazardous because of
localised corrosion or condensate flash, that could lead to phenomena of slug forces;
f) avoiding piping subject to vibration being in resonance with the excitant;

The criteria for choosing the normally utilised supports are schematically shown in the FLOW
CHART in the next page. In the criteria the following piping types have not been considered:
• cryogenic piping
• Cupro-Nickel piping
• RTRP and PVC piping
• piping connected to reciprocating machines
• piping with fluid temperature ≥ 600 °C
since their supports will be in accordance with the project standardised supports.

Loads to be sustained

The loads to be sustained by the supports will be calculated taking into account all the
applicable components listed here below.

a) Mass of conveyed fluid, calculated on the basis of the following densities:

- gas/steam/air: 0
- water: 1000 Kg/m3
- other liquids : own density of each liquid;

b) Insulation mass calculated according to the density of each type of insulation, 120 Kg/m3 is
to be provided if not otherwise indicated for the project;

c) All the loads due to thermal expansion and anyhow resulting from the stress analysis
calculations;

d) Overloads due to any water hammer or slug forces phenomena;

e) Concentrated loads due to the opening of safety valves;

f) Overloads due to earthquake, assuming a corrective factor in the piping own mass;

g) Wind force;

h) Overall mass of piping in hydraulic test conditions, i.e. piping full of water. In this case,
however, the loads due to wind and earthquake should not be considered. The load due to
the hydraulic test is not applied to the supports for lines subject to pneumatic test only.

3.2 Stress supports design

The design of the stress supports must be developed giving full consideration of the
requirements deriving from stress analysis verifications.
It is good practice that the stress supports are designed by a stress analysis specialist; in any
case the design of all stress supports shall be approved by the stress analysis specialist.

3.2.1. Spring supports

The characteristics of each spring support, such as the operating load and the working travel,
shall comply with the results of stress analysis calculations.
To indicate the spring supports characteristics, both of variable load and constant load type, the
data sheets DAT.TP.SUP.0102 and DAT.TP.SUP.0103 shall be completely filled in and issued
as project documents. These project documents are, together with the general Specification
SPC.TB.SUP.0602, the documents to be utilised for the supports procurements.

When a short delivery time is required, the above mentioned forms may be completed in two
successive stages. In the first one, which allows the issue of the purchase order, only the
information needed to identify the type and quantity of spring supports are specified, in a second
stage the dimensions for the construction of all the accessories (tie rods, clevis, pins, etc.) are
added.

Rev. 02 Date Nov. 2009

Sheet 10 (35)

3.2.2. Selection of spring support type

The selection of spring support type (constant or variable load) will be made on the basis of the
permissible load variation, to be calculated as follows:

V = Cm − Ce × 100
Ce
where:
V = Load variation
Cm = Erection load
Ce = Operating load

For load variations ≤ ± 15% variable load type supports will be used.
For load variations > ± 15% constant load type supports will be used.

Constant load type supports must be chosen with a total range that is 30÷40% greater than the
stress analysis requirement and, in any case, the difference between total range and required
theoretical range must never be less than 30 mm.

Special attention will be paid in the determination of the theoretical range, by analysing the
transient heating and cooling thermal conditions of the piping line/equipment.

In case of particular installations, where limited spaces are necessary (e.g. spring support under
equipment or on Skid) the variable loads spring supports may be the CupDisk©.
When the load is higher than 90kN and the travel is lower than 5 mm, the CupDisk© may be
utilised; for loads higher than 90kN and travels higher than 5 mm the most economical
advantageous solution will be evaluated between traditional spring and CupDisk© supports.
The CupDisk© supports may be utilised in the above mentioned cases even if their
characteristics are not within the minimum requirement of erection load adjustment, indicated in
the General Specification SPC.TB.SUP.0602.
For the selection criteria of CupDisk© see the specification SPC.TB.SUP.0605, while for their
procurement a project document will be issued on the basis of the typical specification
SPT.TP.SUP.0103.

3.2.3. PTFE slide plates for piping

PTFE slide plates in accordance with standard STD.TP.SUP.5923 shall be used in all cases
where supports with a low coefficient of friction (coefficient 0.1) are required by the stress
analysis verifications.

3.2.4. Slide plates thermal spray coated with graphite and lubricated for high temperature piping
When supports with low friction coefficient (coefficient 0,15) have been considered in the stress
analysis verification for lines with operating temperature higher than 300°C, slide plates thermal
spray coated with graphite will be provided according to the Standard STD.TP.SUP.5922.

3.2.5. PTFE slide plates for exchangers and horizontal vessels

If equipment needs to slide on low friction support plates, due to piping stress analysis
requirements, a detailed drawing must be prepared in order to have the correct erection of the
equipment and eventually the saddles modification, in accordance with the form
DAT.TP.PLT.0019.

3.2.6. Hydraulic shock absorbers

When from the stress analysis verification it is required the use of hydraulic shock absorbers,
the necessary details for the definition of shock absorber type must be provided, these being:
a) erection length;
b) travel range required to allow the free thermal expansion;
c) the dynamic load to be contained.

The specification to be utilised for the indication of hydraulic shock absorbers will be issued, as
project document, on the basis of the typical specification SPT.TP.SUP.0101.

3.2.7. Support and anchor sleepers

The piping loads on support and anchor sleepers will be transmitted to CIV by filling in the form
DAT.TP.SUP.0105 and issuing the data sheet for the project.

3.3 Non-stress supports design

Although supports are to be designed taking into account the thermal expansion phenomena
and stresses of each piping system and equipments, here below are given guidelines for typical
cases and the most frequently occurring situations.
Furthermore the requirements of “General Information” in the STD.TP.SUP.5920, chapter 1.1,
must be adhered to.
The non-stress supports for lines NPS < 2” shall be designed at field in accordance with the
specification SPC.TP.SUP.0604, if not otherwise required for the project.

3.3.1. Horizontal piping on pipe-racks or pipe-ways

The support design shall provide:
a) guides on straight runs, positioned as per scheme in Appendix D;
b) maximum distance between supports not higher than those shown in Appendices A, B and
C;
c) intermediate support, attached to adjacent pipe, for single pipes with an allowable span that
is less than the distance between two consecutive supports.
The adjacent pipe chosen as a supporting pipe must have diameter at least three sizes
greater than the supported pipe, and never less than 4”.
EXAMPLES:

SUPPORTING PIPE NPS ≥ 4” 6” 8”

SUPPORTED PIPE NPS 1½” 2” 3”

exceptions will be allowed only after stress and deflection checks of the supporting pipe;
d) reinforcing plates or saddles for non-insulated pipes at the supporting points for loads greater
than those given in the general notes in the standard STD.TP.SUP.5920 diagram 1.1.1.8.a
“Allowable loads for non-reinforced pipes on 20 mm diameter rods or structure beams”.
e) for all pipes for which a slope is required towards a definite direction, the max allowable span
should be so that the max deflection of pipe is less than the level difference between two
adjacent support points, in order to avoid pockets.

4. SUPPORTS OF PIPING CONNECTED TO EQUIPMENTS

4.1 Piping on columns or vertical vessels

The stress analysis requirements for supports and guides will be integrated with the following:
a) The rest support must be as close as possible to the nozzle. If there is a horizontal spool
immediately adjacent to the nozzle, the rest support will be foreseen in the points indicated in
Appendix E;;
b) the guides along the vertical run will be spaced as indicated in Appendix E;
c) ease of erection is also to be considered when positioning and spacing the guides, therefore
it will be useful grouping the guides for a number of pipes at a common elevation. This
criteria is valid also for columns with reinforcing rings, where by positioning the guides on the
rings it is not necessary the welding on the shell;
d) for large diameter piping (NPS ≥ 16”), standard distances between the guides are not
established since the support system is generally based on stress analysis requirements.

4.2 Piping connected to turbines and centrifugal pumps and compressors

The main requirement for support for these lines is to avoid loads on the machines higher than
the allowed ones due to thermal expansion and piping weight. Therefore the support design
must reflect the stress analysis calculation results. Furthermore the following general criteria will
also be taken into account:
a) the support system will permit the setting up for the nozzle alignment. Therefore the first
support near each nozzle must be of adjustable type and with a low friction sliding plate
(PTFE);
b) the supports and related foundation plinths must not create difficulties for the access to the
machines, to valves operation and flanges assembly/disassembly;
c) the foundation plinths of ground supports must not interfere with the floor drain hubs, the
underground cables or with the equipment foundations. If interference between foundation
occurs they will be analysed with the CIV foundation designer;
d) the supports must be positioned in such a way to allow the dismantling of the piping around
the machine for maintenance or removal, as well as to allow the installation and dismantling
of temporary strainers without having to install temporary supports.

4.3 Piping connected to reciprocating pumps and compressors

Besides providing support, the supporting system must also maintain within allowable values the
stresses on the piping deriving from vibrations transmitted by the machine and from the
mechanical vibrations induced by the pressure pulsations. Thus the supporting structures will be
designed taking into account both static and dynamic loads.
The support system will be realized in accordance with calculations results of stress analysis
and analogue simulation described in the design practice PRG.TP.CAL.0009.

Sheet 13 (35)

As general rules the individual supports will be:

a) independent from any building and with their own foundations, to avoid the transmission of
vibrations to other plant components;
b) rigid, with foundations of mass adequate to the loads;
c) constructed in such a way to ensure that their components are subject to tension and
compression stresses only, but not to bending stresses;
d) the guides must be designed with zero clearance; this can be achieved with the use of
adjustable devices, with the insertion of spring washer in the “hold down” type support, or
with the insertion of rubbery materials between pipe and support/clamp (neoprene or
equivalent).

4.4 Piping connected to heaters

As well as complying with stress analysis verifications results, the following general criteria must
be considered:
a) when choosing and positioning supports adjacent to the nozzles, if an anchor has not been
provided by the manufacturer, it is necessary provide supports which will not stop the
expansion of the coil, as foreseen in the stress analysis calculations;
b) where spectacle blinds or dismantling spools are inserted, both the upstream and
downstream piping spool must be adequately supported considering also the conditions of
dismantled spool;
c) avoid the support obstructing the walking floors of service platforms.
When supports connected to the heater structures are to be provided, the information related to
their position and loads will be communicated to MAPAF for their transmission to the
Manufacturer.

4.5 Piping connected to air-coolers

In addition to the information from stress analysis verifications, the following general criteria
must be considered:
a) provide for the spaces necessary between the various bundles to insert, when requested, the
additional supporting structures for piping supports;
b) take into account the dismantling of bundles, without having to disassemble parts the support
structures or to put up temporary supports.
When additional structures for piping supports are foreseen, the information on their position
and loads will be communicated to AMEC for the transmission to the Manufacturer.

4.6 Piping connected to heat exchangers

The supports of piping connected to heat exchangers will not prevent the line dismantling and/or
the replacement of the flanged joint gasket, for this reason it is preferred to foresee always the
first support located near the equipment to be of adjustable type. The position of this adjustable
support may be as indicated in the following schemes.

4.6.2. Solution with support connection point located at elevation different from the lower shell tangent
line, normally utilised for piping with operating temperature < 150 °C.

4.7 Attachments for piping supports on pressure vessels

The attachments and plates for supports, to be welded to both vertical and horizontal pressure
vessels, will be defined and listed together with their characteristics by using the data sheet
DAT.TP.SUP.0104 and the typical specification SPT.TP.SUP.0100, which shall be issued for
the project and sent to AMEC for the transmission to Manufacturer.
The location of attachments and plates on courses wildings shall be avoided, for this reason it is
necessary to verify their location with the courses layout made available from Manufacturers
through AMEC, and agree any displacements deemed necessary.
When a different priority indication is not given from AMEC, priority must be given for the
information on attachments and plates to all vessels for which the final heat treatment is
foreseen to be done by the Manufacturer, as no further welding can be carried out after this
construction phase.

5. SUPPORTS POSITIONING CRITERIA

The supports are to be located so that they do not obstruct the normal passage and will allow a
minimum vertical free clearance of 2200 mm where the passage of personnel is foreseen.

5.1 Supports on ground floor or structure

Posts and portals must be positioned so that they do not restrict access to equipment and do
not obstruct routine maintenance and plant access. The following must be avoided:
a) the use of posts in the area covered by the pipe-rack;
b) the use of supports which require foundations in the vicinity of underground piping or electric
cables;
c) the use of supports standing on the coverings of trenches, except for exceptional
circumstances and for limited loads, to be agreed with CIV, which do not limit anyway the
access to the interior of the trench.

5.2 Guides

Guides will be located in such a way so that they do not permit the lateral displacement of
piping, by utilising the criteria given in Appendix D.

6. SUPPORT SHOES AND SADDLES

6.1 Support shoes and saddles for horizontal pipes

6.1.1. Minimum required length

Normally, the support shoes or saddles are mounted in the centre of the support.
The length must be at least twice the axial movement of the piping plus 100 mm, and not less
than 300 mm.
In the case the minimum required length is higher than the one provided in the support
standards, it is preferred the solution of special shoe or saddle having length higher than the
preset installation.

6.1.2. Clamped shoes

For piping where it is not advisable to execute erection welds at site, clamped shoes will be
adopted. Generally these piping lines are the following:
- metallic piping for which the post welding heat treatment (PWHT) is always required in the
Piping Class
- metallic piping having thin thicknesses (CS < sch. 20; SS < sch. 10S)
- piping internally lined
- piping in special material, such as: titanium, hastelloy, monel, cupronickel
- hot dip galvanized piping
- RTRP or PVC piping
- pipelines where the electric insulation is foreseen
The clamped support is not necessary on metallic piping when the Piping Class requires the
PWHT according to ASME code (usually indicated: “by code”), since the support welds do not
require the PWHT.
The general criteria for the use of this type of support are indicated in the Flow Chart shown in
the previous section 3 and will be confirmed for each project.

6.2 Reinforcing plates and saddles for non insulated piping

For non insulated piping reinforcing saddles and plates will be foreseen in the following cases:
- loads higher than those provided in table 1.1.1.8 of standard STD.TP.SUP.5920;
- materials incompatibility, to prevent galvanic corrosion.

The length of said plates and saddles will be in accordance with the requirements of previous
paragraph 6.1.1.

6.3 Saddles sizing

6.3.1 For all piping having NPS ≥ 20” and ≤ 80” saddles shall be foreseen in accordance with the
standard STD.TP.SUP.5920. When the load acting on the rest exceeds the limits indicated by
the standard, the local stresses acting both in the pipe shell and saddle itself will be checked.
The verification calculations will be done according to BSI BS.5500 or equivalent methods
approved by TUB.
The check will be carried out taking into account the conditions deemed most severe (hydraulic
test if requested, and/or operating conditions with the corroded thickness of the pipe).

Sheet 17 (35)

6.3.2 For all piping having NPS > 80″, both insulated and not saddles capable of bearing the load
acting on the support are to be used. For these saddles the local stresses, both in the pipe shell
and saddle itself, must be checked.
The checking method is the same as in the previous paragraph.

6.4 Brackets for vertical pipes NPS ≥ 40”

For vertical pipes of NPS ≥ 40”, both insulated or not, brackets and reinforcements capable of
bearing the acting load.
For the sizing and checking of these brackets refer to previous chapter 6.3.

6.5 Sloped piping

Sloped piping will be supported with variable height shimming, welded to the structure and
located under the shoe, saddle or pipe.
In order to minimize and optimize the shimming height, standard shoes and saddles will be used
with height of: 100, 150 and 200 mm, in accordance with the solutions shown in Appendix F.

7. SUPPORTS FOR SPECIAL MATERIALS AND SERVICES

7.1 Supports for cryogenic piping

Supports for cryogenic piping normally consist of a load-bearing steel component and a high
density polyurethane component in contact with the pipe. This in order to avoid the formation of
condensate or ice near each support, by considering also that, under certain thermal conditions,
the direct contact between the pipe and the metallic support could produce a local brittleness of
the supporting structure.
The supports for cryogenic piping will be defined and indicated in proper documents
(standardisation, specifications and drawings) issued for the project.

7.2 Supports for Cupro-Nickel piping

7.2.1. Cupro-nickel piping will be supported with carbon steel clamped supports. Furthermore a layer
of neoprene or similar material will always be placed between the support clamp and the pipe, to
prevent direct contact between pipe and support materials in order to avoid galvanic corrosion
phenomena.

7.2.2. For horizontal piping the maximum allowable span between two rests will be in accordance with
the Appendix B.

7.3 Supports for resin pipe

7.3.1. The supports of resin pipes (e.g. RTRP) will be normally of carbon steel clamped type.
Furthermore a layer of neoprene or similar material will be placed between support clamp and
pipe, in order to avoid that clamp tightening damages the pipe locally.

7.3.2. The maximum allowable span between two rests of horizontal pipes is normally given by the
Manufacturer on the basis of the pipe mechanical characteristics.
In the Appendix C is shown an example of maximum span values for RTRP pipes.

7.3.3. When metallic valves and/or heavy components are present in the piping, supports will be
foreseen in order to prevent the pipe bending. This may be achieved providing supports as
follows:
- bolted type support on the metallic valve flange;
- supports on resin pipe close to the valve.

7.4 Supports for PVC piping

Normally the PVC piping will be continuously supported by means of a carbon steel L shape,
having equal lengths and vertex in the lower position. The pipe is bound to the shape with U-
bolts and the shape will be located on the beams of piperack or dedicated structures.
The supports for PVC piping will be defined and indicated in proper documents (standardisation,
specifications and drawings) issued for the project.

7.5 Supports for piping with fluid temperature ≥ 600 °C

The supports for piping with fluid having temperature ≥ 600 °C will be normally of carbon steel
clamped type. Furthermore a layer of calcium silicate will be placed between the pipe and the
support clamp in order to thermally insulate the two elements.
These supports will be defined and indicated in proper documents (standardisation,
specifications and drawings) issued for the project.

8. TEMPORARY SUPPORTS

When temporary supports are necessary their choice and management will be carried out using
the same modalities of permanent supports.
Temporary supports for piping will always be of clamped type, while portals and posts will be
realised with bolted connections to facilitate their dismantling and removal.
Furthermore on the piping isometric drawings where they are shown the following note will be
added:

SUPPORT TO BE REMOVED BEFORE THE DECLARATION OF PLANT MECHANICAL

9. SUPPORTS TYPICAL SOLUTIONS

9.1 Control valve groups and by-pass

Control valve groups and by-pass, when located at grade adjacent to rack columns or other
structures, will be normally supported from grade to avoid additional loads not foreseen during
the structural design. Groups weighing less than 2500 N may be supported from the structure
beams.
The use of spring supports at ground is to be minimised for the cases when no other solution is
possible, by verifying also the option of relocating the group.

9.2 Supports on steel and reinforced concrete structures

9.2.1 Loads acting on the structures

All the loads transmitted to the structures by the piping will be defined according to the criteria
indicated in the document PRG.TP.SIN.1004.

9.2.2 Supports on reinforced concrete structures

All supports located on reinforced concrete structures will be connected to them by means of
metallic embedded plates or passing through holes for the insertion of connecting tie rods. The
location, sizing and loads of plates and tie rods will be defined according to the criteria given in
the document PRG.TP.SIN.1004.
When new supports or otherwise located supports are necessary after the structure
construction, it is possible to adopt solutions with clamps on the column or with expansion bolts.
However the use of these alternative methods should be minimised, in any case their feasibility
in the project will be always verified with CIV.

9.3 Stubs for supports attachment to elbows

The stubs, to be welded to the piping elbows will be marked on the isometrics in accordance
with the standard STD.TB.SUP.5069.

9.4 Posts and portals

Posts and portals will be selected from the types foreseen in the standards
STD.TP.SUP.5920/5925 on the basis of the dimensions and the indicated allowable loads.
For loads not foreseen in the standard, the static verification will be carried out to size all the
elements forming the special support as well as the related construction drawing.

9.5 Supports foundations

The support foundations list will be issued for the project by using the data form
DAT.TP.SUP.0101, where the loads necessary for the sizing of foundation, including the
supports own weight, will be indicated. The sizing will be done with the aid of the computer
program SLABLOCK that defines the support foundations according to the CIV standard
STD.CV.GEN.0004. When the foundations cannot be of standard type due to interferences
and/or high loads, they will be defined jointly with CIV.

Notes for the correct identification of portals

1) The correct indication of the identifying code, as shown in the above example “P-NNZ-LLLL-
KKKK-HHHH”, foresees the sequence of codes separated by the symbol “-“, without free
spaces and other separation symbols.
2) When the indication of a portal needs two parameters only, as shown in the above example
P-04B-1200-1000, it will be codified as shown, by omitting the not required parameters.

10.3. Supports standardized for the project

When in a project standardised supports are to be used different from those foreseen in the
standards STD.TP.SUP.5920/5925, they will be defined and represented in a specification
issued for the project.
The identification code of project standardised supports will be preceded by the letter “J”, as
shown in the following example:

JX-NN

where: J indicates it is a support standardised for the project

X is the code of the support function as indicated at chapter 10.1

10.7. Identification of support foundations

The foundations of piping supports are identified with different coding systems, described in the
next paragraphs, depending on the chosen methodology for the representation of the support
on the 3D model: logical support or physical support, as described in the next section 11.
The foundations of supports will be listed, together with their characteristics, in a specific list
issued for the project by utilising the data form DAT.TP.SUP.0101.

10.7.1 Identification of foundation of support represented as “logical support”

The support foundation will be identified with the PF letters at the beginning of the identifying
code, as shown in the here below example and in the examples of figure 1 in the next page.

PF-NNN-LLLL-AAA

where: PF indicates it is a support foundation

NNN is the foundation sequential number in the project foundation list
LLLL is the distance L (mm) between support and foundation (indicate 0 if
coincident)
AAA is the angle (degrees) between the plant north and the line joining the
support position and related foundation

Example: PF-025-250-90 (see figure 1)

indicates: the position of foundation 025, L=250 mm, angle 90° (east direction)

10.7.2 Identification of foundation of support represented as “physical support”

The foundations of supports represented with the “physical support” methodology that is
completely modelled for shape and dimensions will be identified with a code that indicates type
and dimensions as foreseen by the standard STD.CV.GEN.0004.
Example of identification:

E-2-1050-200

where: E indicates the foundation type

2 indicates the plinth type
1050 indicates the plinth height
200 indicates the height of above ground foundation

NOTES
1) The spans indicated in the tables of this appendix have been obtained in accordance with
the ASME B 31.3 code, on the basis of the following assumptions:
a) pipe on uninterrupted support;
b) assumption of stress as percentage of the max allowable stress at design temperature
according to ASME B 31.3 (Sh):
• for pipes conveying liquid with density = 1000 Kg/m3 : 33% Sh;
• for pipes conveying gas or vapour with T < 150 °C : 30% Sh (to reduce the span and
the wind effect on very long spans);
• for pipes conveying gas or vapour with T ≥ 150 °C : 25% Sh (to further reduce the
wind effect due to the greater exposed surface of insulation);
c) pipe maximum deflection:
8 mm for NPS < 2”
15 mm for NPS ≥ 2”
d) pipe weight calculated on the basis of nominal thickness;
e) calculation of moment of inertia and section modulus on the basis of nominal thickness;
f) for each material and temperature range the Young modulus at the considered max
temperature has been adopted.
2) To find out the max span for values (such as: materials, diameters, thicknesses,
temperatures and insulation) different than those specified, the following formula will be
adopted:

Sh × W
L=
e × 125 × q

where: L -span (m)

Sh -allowable stress according to ASME B 31.3 (N/mm2)
W -section modulus (mm3)
q -unitary weight (N/m)
e -reduction coefficient:
3 for pipes containing liquid with density = 1000 Kg/m3
3,3 for pipes containing gas or vapour with T < 150 °C
4 for pipes containing gas or vapour with T ≥ 150 °C

The max deflection of pipe supported with the previously calculated span will be verified
with the following formula:

q × L4
f =
185 × E × I × 103
where: f -deflection (mm)
q - unitary weight (N/m)
L -span length (mm)
E -Young modulus (N/mm2)
I - moment of inertia (mm4)
3) In case of concentrated loads on the pipes, like valves or supports for adjacent pipes, the
maximum span indicated in the table or calculated with the formulas of the previous note,
will be verified on the basis of the above said concentrated loads.

Notes
1) “L1” is the minimum length necessary to permit the piping maximum thermal expansion of 120 mm.
2) “B” is the dimension of loop as defined by stress analysis calculation.
2) For piping on pipe-rack or pipe-way, which usually have spans of 6 or 8 meters, the guides are realised
on each alignment for NPS up to 6” and on alternate alignment for NPS > 6”. In this case it is suggest to
locate the guides on the odd alignments, if possible, to make easier the calculation, the construction and
the controls.
