The monthly meeting of the Board of Directors of Highland Lakes Condominium Association was held on the third Monday
of the month, in accordance with the By-Laws of the Association. President Peggy Zonca called the March 18, 2024, regular
meeting of the Board of Directors to order at 7:05 p.m.

1. Meet Your New Neighbor: After reviewing the current interview questionnaire, the group decided that modi-
fications are needed. The group reviewed and approved the final draft of questions completed. It was agreed that
interested members Suzy Q Story, Cheryl Huizing, and Sandy Nolan would be the initial writers for these inter-
views as they arise.

2. Mission Statement: After a group discussion, the group decided on a final Mission Statement, which the
group will present for a vote at the next meeting.

3. By-Laws: Discussion and group consensus on revised By-Laws were drawn, which the group will present at
next month's meeting for final vote.

4. Community Participation: The committee discussed printing an article that encouraged community partici-
pation explaining why you could benefit from being involved. Watch for this article in our Next Herald.

SUBJECTS DISCUSSED:

1. Chili Cook-off Shuffleboard Tournament: Final plans are underway for this event, which will occur on Satur-
day, March 9th, from 1-4 p.m. This year's cook-off will include a shuffleboard tournament as an added attraction.

2. Women's Tea: This event will be held on Sunday, April 21st, from 2-4 p.m. Details can be found on our Face-
book page, on the scrolling monitors in our Clubhouse, and in our Herald. Reservations can be made at the Club-
house from April 1st-15th. Register as soon as possible, as seats will be limited.

3. Housekeeping: Joe has been given a list of minor projects in hopes of getting them taken care of. Thank you in
advance to Joe, our Property Manager, for making sure we are looking our best.

OLD BUSINESS:
1. Clubhouse landscaping update: The project is complete. The following issues/items remain:
• Lighting on the flagpole from the building still needs adjustment, and the lights from the ground need to be
fixed. Other patio lights need to be checked.
• A splitter for a hose hookup needs to be added to the sprinkler spigot. M&D will turn on the sprinkler sys-
tem for the season and add the hose hookup
• Shrubs on the southwest corner need protection from the rabbits eating them.
• Boulders must still be moved from the Richards court area to the spots marked with cones. Joe will follow
up.

2. Athletic court crack fill update: Joe stated that crack fill will be done this summer.

3. Updates on dock and bridge repairs update: Joe reported that Waters Edge submitted a plan for the dock
repair. It will be forwarded to the Township for permits. Due to monetary and regulatory restraints, the bridge
(Rippling Lane and Bryn Mawr Court area) repairs are on hold.

4. Trash project update: The association-wide trash project is on hold until Wayne County completes its work
on the State's (Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy) new materials management plan. We will
wait to see what the new regulations are.

5. Large signs on trash bins update: Signs are mounted.

6. Tennis court boards update: Staff will remove the boards and take them to the shop to fix.
It was noted that the lock on the back gate by the basketball court continues to be broken. Suggestions for rem-
edies discussed.

7. Dead/ diseased evergreen removal update: The diseased trees will be marked for removal.

8. Pathways project update: The next steps include repairing the walk around Crystal Lake and continuing the
sidewalk from Neptune Court to Mariner Court. No funds are available this budget year. Plans will be proposed
for the next budget year.

NEW BUSINESS:
1. Mulch for Boy Scout project pathway: Joe will follow up on finding mulch donations. Ruts need to be filled
in, and reinforcement is needed around the culvert that the path crosses.

2. Tree planting on Ironwood Court: Free Eastern Red Cedar trees have been donated to replace the diseased
trees on this court.

An Association-wide mulch project (trees and beds on common grounds) is planned for this spring/summer.
Water Landscape has been retained to clean up the northeast corner of Silver Springs Lake and other lake areas
as needed.

On Saturday, March 9th, HLCA had their 2nd Annual Chili Cook-off. A special thank you to the 4 contestants who
donated a crock-pot full of their favorite recipes. Contestants included Kathy Baldwin of Queen Anne Ct., Guy Balok
of Ironwood Ct., Richard Wilson, and Daniel Merchant, both of Longwood Ct. Approximately 20-plus people met at our
Clubhouse and sampled all four "special recipes." Each resident had the chance to cast one vote for their favorite.
After the final count of votes, it was determined that Kathy Baldwin, with her "White Chicken Chili," was this year's
winner. A Chili Cook-off apron was given to Kathy, along with bragging rights for being the 2024 Chili Champion. Look
for Kathy's special recipe on this month's “What’s Cooking?” page. In addition to chili, this year's cook-off event also
included a shuffleboard tournament. After enjoying delicious chili, some participants moved to the adjoining billiards
room to compete in the tabletop shuffleboard tournament. The exciting competition ended in an overtime round,
which declared Yvonne Wilson of Longwood Ct. the champion, defeating Rosemary Campion of Farragut Ct. This was
an easy game with often unexpected outcomes due to the heavy pucks sliding on a slippery surface! Everyone had a
fun time. Thank you to ALL who participated.

Did you know that storm drains on our streets and courts aren't magic
disappearing acts? Everything that goes down them flows directly into our
beautiful lakes!
That means things like:
● Oil
● Paint
● Yard waste
● Pet waste
● Run off from our trash corrals
● Soaps and detergents
can all pollute our lakes and harm the plants and animals that live there. These
pollutants can also make our lakes unsafe for swimming and fishing.
Here's what you can do to help:
● Only rainwater and melted snow goes down storm drains!
● Take used oil and paint to your local hazardous waste disposal center.
● Bag and dispose of yard waste properly.
● Pick up after your pet!
● Place only sealed sturdy trash bags in the trash carts.
● Wash your car at a commercial car wash that recycles water, or use
phosphate-free soap if washing at home.
By working together, we can keep our storm drains clear and our lakes healthy
for everyone to enjoy.
