The study of Indian music begins with the religious and philosophical aspects of
Indian culture. According to ancient scriptures, it was believed that Indian music was a
gift from heaven.
They thought that sound is of god and everything is a manifestation of god. It was
created by the Indian Gods Shiva (the destroyer), Bhrama (the creator), and Vishnu (the
preserver). The development of Indian music began from the religious chants called
Vedas, which were sung without accompaniment. As the years passed, other sacred
hymns like Rig Vedas were developed and integrated.
Religions and Beliefs in India
Religion is considered to be extremely important. India is known as the “land of
spirituality and philosophy” and it was the birthplace of some religions that exist in the
world. Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism are four of the world’s major religions.
Religion has been part of the country’s growing culture. Aside from the four major
religions, they also have Islam and Christianity. In Hinduism, their beliefs lay in
reincarnation.
Musical Characteristics of India
Indian music can be described through the musical characteristics: Hindustani and
Carnatic music.
Hindustani Music Carnatic Music

classical music Indian subcontinent

Softball is a game similar to baseball but played on a smaller diamond area and
uses a larger ball than the latter. The set of rules of baseball is almost the same with
softball. They differ in the way the ball is pitched. The objective of the game is to score
more runs than the opposing team after the end of the game.
Nature and Background of Softball
Softball is a game adapted from baseball. This game uses a larger ball but with a
smaller field. It was in 1887 that this was developed in Chicago which is considered as an
indoor game. The other names given to this sport are indoor baseball, soft bund ball,
mush ball, and kitten ball for the reason that is played by women. It was only in 1926 that
it earned the name softball.
Two Types of Softball Game
There are two types of softball game. One is the slow pitched softball and the other
one is the fast-pitched softball.

Skills used in Softball
Before you play softball, you should learn the skills involved in playing the game. It
is easier to play the game if you have acquired the skills in playing softball.
1. Throwing- The act of passing the ball to a teammate. There are two types
of throwing:
a. Underhand throwing is the act of passing the ball below the shoulder level.
b. Overhand throwing is the act of passing the ball by swinging your arm just
above the shoulder.
2. Fielding- Defensive act of catching the ball after a successful hit was made. It
could be a ground or a fly ball.
3. Batting- The act of hitting the ball by swinging the arms backward and hitting the
incoming ball by swinging it again toward the area of the ball origin.
4. Catching- The process of receiving the ball from a pitch or throw. Good
coordination is necessary for this kind of skill.
Different positions of the players in softball
1. Pitcher- The one who throws the ball toward a batter which is positioned at the
middle of the diamond.
2. Catcher- The player who controls the pitcher’s throw and positioned at the back
of the home plate. The catcher and the pitcher are the leaders of the game.
3. First Baseman- The player that is positioned on the right side of the diamond next
to the catcher’s position to his/her right.
4. Second Baseman- The one who is in the middle of the diamond next to first
base. He/She is in control between the gap from the first base going to
him/her.
5. Third Baseman- This player takes care of the hit that travels the third

What is an infection?
An infection is a condition in which pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and
protozoans enter the body and multiply.
Sometimes, pathogens have entered the body and you may not even notice. This is
because our body also has its ways of dealing with the pathogens.
Pathogens are disease-causing microorganisms. When a particular pathogen enters
the body, the immune system comes to work. The immune system sees the pathogen as
an invader so it will try to get rid of it or it "fight" the foreign invader. The process of
pathogens' invasion and the immune system's reactions undergo several stages.

What are the stages of infection?

1.Incubation stage
Is the time between the exposure to a pathogen and the appearance of symptoms.
The incubation period of COVID-19, which is the time between exposure to the
virus and symptom onset, is on average 5-6 days, but can be as long as 14 days. Thus,
quarantine should be in place for 14 days from the last exposure to a confirmed case

CAREER MODULES 2021-2022

St. Vincent School Foundation,
33
This means that the virus causing covid-19 has been in your body for a few
days without knowing it because there is no manifestation of symptoms. The signs and
symptoms may appear toward the end of the incubation period.
2.Prodromal stage
Is the time when the signs and symptoms of a disease start to appear.
Generally, this stage lasts for about a day or two and the person infected with the
pathogen, although showing signs and symptoms, may still function normally despite the
feeling of discomfort.
3.Acute stage
Is the period when the disease is at its peak and that the signs and symptoms
can be clinically used or tested to diagnose the disease.
4.Declining stage
Is the period when symptoms start to subside and the severity of the disease
declines. The patient feels an improvement but still can't return to doing normal
activities. The infection is still present but is now reduced.
5.Convalescent stage
Is the stage in which the symptoms of the disease begin to fade and the patient
recovers his/her health and strength.

What are the common communicable diseases in the Philippines?

What are misconceptions about communicable diseases?

The following are some misconceptions about communicable diseases:

Misconception: Once vaccinated, you can’t get the diseases again.
Truth: There are viruses that have different strains. You may become immune with a
particular strain of the virus but not in all the strains. Example: Dengue virus has about
four strains. If you get vaccinated against dengue, there is no guarantee that you won't
get sick of dengue again because you may be infected by a different strain.

CAREER MODULES 2021-2022

St. Vincent School Foundation,

Misconception: If you have already had the flu, you can't get it again.
Truth: Influenza virus is so contagious that according to studies, a person may acquire the
virus more than a hundred times during his/her lifetime.

Misconception: If you are healthy, you don't need to get vaccinated.

Truth: Pathogens may still infect healthy body, but the difference would be on strength of
body to fight the pathogen.

Misconception: You can't spread a communicable disease if you are not sick.
Truth: 20% to 30% of people have the flu and don't show symptoms.

Misconception: You can only infect others when you are in the healing stage.
Truth: You may infect others as long as they are exposed to the pathogens at any stage of
the disease.

The following are personal health habits that you may observe to prevent you from
acquiring or spreading diseases:
 Wash your hands regularly.
 Avoid sharing personal belongings.
 Stay and rest at home when sick.
 Handle and prepare food hygienically.
 Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze.
 Avoid touching animals that may bring diseases.
 Make sure you get vaccinated.
 Properly disinfect and clean surfaces like toilet bowls, sinks, etc.

Emerging and Re-emerging Diseases

Emerging diseases- are diseases that have newly appeared in the population, or that have
existed before and affected only a small number of people in isolated places, or the
disease have occurred in human history but have only been recognized recently as an
infectious disease.
Example diseases:
 Lassa Fever
 Ebola hemorrhagic fever
 Legionnaire disease
 Hemolytic uremic syndrome
 Aids
 Gastric ulcers
 Cholera
 Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome
 Pandemic influenza

CAREER MODULES 2021-2022

St. Vincent School Foundation,
33
Re-emerging disease- are diseases that had decreased in incidence and brought under
control but have surfaced again due to change in health conditions of the population,
and are again becoming health problems globally or in a population.
Example diseases:
 Cryptosporidiosis
 Diphtheria
 Malaria
 Meningitis
 Pertussis
 Rabies
 Rubeola (measles)
 Schistosomiasis
 Tuberculosis
 Yellow fever

What is self-monitoring skill to prevent communicable diseases?

Self-monitoring skill refers to an individual's ability to monitor his/her susceptibility
to common communicable diseases. You need to remember that prevention and
control of acquiring and spreading communicable diseases are highly personal in nature.
There are ways on how a person may prevent the transmission and acquisition of
the disease. One may "disease-proof" oneself by eating a balanced diet, having
regular exercise, and getting enough rest and sleep or by observing good health habits.
You need to bear in mind that one's self-monitoring can also affect others and
encourage them to do the same.

Programs and Policies to Prevent Communicable Diseases

Prevention and control of communicable diseases may start from each
individual. But to be more effective and for a larger scale, the government is also
implementing programs and policies for the prevention and control of communicable
diseases. The community's health is a concerted effort of all stakeholders.
The following are some of the programs and measures implemented by DOH and other
government agencies for the prevention and control of the communicable diseases:
 Guaranteeing a safe water supply
 Dealing properly with sewage treatment and disposal
 Introducing a food safety program
 Educating on animal control and pet caring programs
 Holding vaccination programs
