Trip #1

Feb 9, 2024
Instructions

Location: Librairie De Stiil Bookstore:

 351 Duluth Ave E, Montreal, Quebec H2W 1J3

 Meeting time 12:30pm in front of the Mont Royal metro.
 See map below for directions just in case you are late. Have a charged phone with you so
you can google your way there or back if you end up separating from the crowd.
 For this activity, start by taking some pictures of the trip from the metro to the bookstore.
Take pictures of what you find interesting. It is your subjective experience and what you
find interesting to look at that matters. This will be part of your creative expression. What
you see is important. These pictures will be uploaded on your assignment as part of your
first assignment.

After purchasing your books, you are invited to go to any number of places on your own, or with
friends. The idea is that you take some time to think about what you value, what it means to live
a fulfilled life, in a public place to practice thinking philosophically and being philosophical.
Being with other people is central to good philosophy. Here are my suggestions:
a. The Word (469 Rue Milton, Montreal, Quebec H2X 1W3)
1.8 km or 26 minutes away, this excursion takes you to one of Montreal’s oldest English used
bookstores. It is located in the heart of the McGill ghetto, which is an ironic name for it because
it is where only rich students can afford to live. It is close to McGill University and the McGill
metro. If you have not been there, it is worth visiting.

b. BAnQ (The Grande Bibliothèque de BAnQ, 475 Boul. de Maisonneuve E, Montreal,

Quebec H2L 5C4)
1.5 km or 19 minutes away, this is located at Berri-Uqam metro and it is the largest library in
Quebec. It has English books as well as French. It is an enormous building on several floors,
enclosed in a glass structure. Membership is free and everyone with a Quebec address has access
to it. It’s a great place to work, learn and even watch films.

c. Kouign Amann Bakery (316 Mont-Royal Ave E, Montreal, Quebec H2T 1P7)
700m or 10 minutes away. On the other hand, if you have some nickels and dimes to spend, treat
yourself to some of the best pastries you’ve ever tasted at this little bakery, just down the street
from your metro station.

d. The Anti-Café, Place des Arts on St Catherine street

Only 2 kilometres, or 29 minutes away. This is by far the coolest suggestion. Described as the
best place in Montreal to work, study or chill. It is a coffee shop concept turned upside-down.
You only pay for the time you spend inside, everything else comes free! Coffee, (including
cappuccinos, hot chocolate, and a large selection of tea, snacks, fruits and veggies, toast, eggs,
condiments, rice)... Everything is free. You pay 6.95$ for the first hour, 3$ second hour,
maximum 18$ for the day. You get a great view of Place Des Arts square with endless festivals,
concerts and events. This café is located 200 steps away from the metro Place Des Arts.

These are just some suggestions for where you can go to read, study, eat and socialize. Take
pictures of whatever you decide to do and integrate them with your written assignment. I would
like you to write a page of your reflections on the day, what you decided to do, how you enjoyed
it and of course, include uploaded pictures to show me. This should be about 500 words of
journal style writing. In your journal reflection, include your response to the article “Solvitur
Ambulando”.
