• Bio- engineering is use of living plants for engineering purposes.
• Vegetation is carefully selected for stabilizing roadside slopes, and site
suitability.
• Bio- engineering offers the engineer a new set of tools, but doesn’t
normally replace the use of civil engineering structures.
• Incorporating bio- engineering techniques usually offers a more
effective solution to the problem.
• Combines principles of ecology, hydrology, geology & physics

Qn. What does Bio engineering do?

1. Protect almost all slopes against erosion
2. Used to improve surface drainage and slumping

• Control the surface erosion on fill slope, slope stability
• Lower cost and lower long term maintenance cost
• Low maintenance of live plants after establishment
• Cost effective
• Environment friendly
• Water quality improvements
• Income generation
• Balances temperature and ecosystem
• Protects air pollution
• Sometimes other method cannot be used , so bio is only the option
• Use of local materials
• Creates Employment opportunity
• Environmental benefit of wildlife habitat

 Limitations of Bio engineering
• Vegetation cannot perform its engineering function in initial stage
• Root penetration on foundation and drains
• Causes adverse effects on performance of concrete and steel

 IDENTICATION OF PROBLEM ON SLOPE
• Slope failure occurs when the downward movements
of material due to gravity and shear stresses exceeds
the shear strength.
• Increased demand and construction of engineering
structures, cut and fill slopes has drastically increased ,
causing slope instability, so important to know and
identify problem causing on slope
