02 ¿WHAT SUBJECTS DO YOU NEED TO KNOW

TO STUDY LAW?
To study Law, it is essential to have knowledge in areas such as history, to
understand the development of legal systems; language and literature, to
improve reading, writing and analytical skills; philosophy, especially in ethics,
to substantiate the moral principles behind laws; and social sciences such as
sociology, psychology, and political science, which offer perspective on
human behavior and social structures. It is also helpful to have a basic
understanding of economics and basic mathematical skills for certain legal
specializations. Learning foreign languages benefits those who are interested
in international law or work in multilingual environments. Knowledge of

business, and regulate conduct to prevent harmful
actions. Its effective presence prevents chaos,
injustice and insecurity, being fundamental for the

04 ¿HOW DO INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY LAWS AFFECT

INNOVATION AND CREATIVITY IN MODERN SOCIETY?
Intellectual property (IP) laws, including patents, copyrights, trademarks and
industrial designs, play a crucial role in both promoting and restricting
innovation and creativity in modern society. On the one hand, they encourage
investment in new creations by offering a period of exclusivity to recover
investments, protect these investments, facilitate technology transfer and
establish quality standards. On the other hand, they can limit access to
essential resources, create monopolies, discourage research and complicate
the development of new products due to the fragmentation of rights. To
maximize benefits and minimize harms, it is crucial to seek a balance that
promotes innovation and open access, possibly through legal reforms and open
access policies.
The patent on a new drug can incentivize a pharmaceutical company to invest
in its development, ensuring that it can recover its costs and make a profit.
