INTRODUCTION

The Work Immersion Program

The Department of Education (DepEd) issues the Guidelines for Work Immersion

as basis for the implementation of work immersion in all Senior High Schools.

DepEd' s Student Immersion Program, as a key feature of the Senior High School

Curriculum, is a work related professional learning opportunities that will allow

students to gain important knowledge, skills and attitude in the chosen field. It will

provide an opportunity to the student to develop themselves in the workplace in a

supervised setting, while also allowing the employer to evaluate their performance

and management potential for future possible employment.

It can be a way to gain experience. Work immersion can also be a practice for

knowing what courses we will take in college. It is also an opportunity for us to show

what we can do and how to use our skills. You are able to communicate with other

people, have connections, build teamwork, and make friends at the same time at your

destined immersion.

With the limited hours, immersion can be a way to showcase your talents, personality,

and especially your skills according to the given tasks. It becomes a place to train and

learn more knowledge. You learn proper ways to manage things for better

coordination. (DO 30, S. 2017).

17
Importance of Work Immersion

In terms of education, the Philippine educational system has been developed to

provide the learner’s the best. It happened the moment we changed our own

curriculum system from the basic form to widely use one – the K-12 curriculum. And

just recently, the Department of Education (DepEd) has released the guidelines for the

conduct of work immersion activities for senior high school students in the country.

Work immersion is a key feature in the Senior High School curriculum (SHS) and

refers to the part of that consists of 80 hours of hands-on experience or work

simulation which Grades 11 and 12 students will undergo to expose them to the actual

workplace setting and to enrich the competencies provided by the school under the

supervision of the School Head and the designated personnel of the Partner. Work

immersion is the counterpart of the internship programs in the tertiary level.

The said learning experience that the students can get from it which can range from

80 hours will surely enable and help students as they familiarize themselves with the

workplace thus experience workplace simulation and apply their competencies

in areas of specialization. The completion of work immersion is a prerequisite to

graduation under the K-12 program. This is a first rate on the part of DepEd, since

18
young people like to explore and to connect with the people, this work immersion will

provide them to acquire relevant skills by performing in actual work setting.

The importance of work immersion must be seen as vital point of giving students a

venue to improve themselves through experiencing real stuff first hand. This is the

very highlight of the Senior High School program. It helps students to acquire

knowledge and experience that can help them grow as professional individuals.

Furthermore, this program provides opportunities to go through the actual

methodologies of a special job using the real tools, equipment and documents. In

effect, the work place becomes a development venue for us student trainee to learn

more about their chosen field and practice what we have learn from academy.

(Alberto H. R.)

Objectives of Work Immersion Program

become familiar with the workplace.

2. Work immersion provides senior high school learners with opportunities to

3. Work Immersion provides senior high school learners with opportunities to apply

environment to prepare for all curriculum exits.

SKILLS ACQUIRED

Interpersonal Skill

Relationship with the Supervisor The trainees were assigned at the General

Services Office of Local Government Unit (LGU) wherein their immediate supervisor

is Ms. Sherrymine C. Lazaga During the first day of training, the trainees are afraid to

mingle with their supervisor but later on they learned how to cope with the difficulty

of mingling with the supervisor.

The trainees found it comfortable working with the supervisor since the

supervisor treated them nicely. In terms of handling the student, the supervisor always

advised us to ask permission first before we run errands outside the office. The

supervisor always reminds the trainees of some policies, rules, and regulations at the

General Services office and kept asking them about the problems encountered. If the

30
trainees didn’t know how to do the task given the supervisor guides and helped them

to accomplish the said task.

The supervisor taught the trainees what is very important to this kind of

industry. She taught every trainee what they have, that "e; Communication &

quote; and through communication, everything will be in good place. Good

communication is one factor to fix any circumstances inside the organization. It will

help trainees to boost their confidence to approach their superior, staff, co-trainee, and

the students.

• Relationship with the Employees

The trainee was assigned at the General Services Office. It was not hard for

the trainee to mingle with the employees of the General Services Office. Since the

trainee student of at the same time an employee of the said institution, they had past

conversation with the staffs regarding on the status of grades, requirements and

request that the trainee often consult with the staffs.

The trainee found it comfortable working with the employee because they

did not just treat the trainee as trainee but as a friend. Even there are lots of work in

the office, the employees can still crack some jokes to the trainee to lighten the

atmosphere.

The staff at the General services Office were the one who helped the trainee in

familiarizing the process in giving time to enhance their skills to other employees, .

The employees also helped the trainee on some task or questions that the trainee

cannot handle. With this task, the trainee or someone new in the office can make

some mistake.

31
Relationship with other Trainees

Sometimes, it cannot avoid that co-workers are lazy and unwilling to work. So

the proper way to dealing on that kind of characteristics is to talk and ask if they need

help, what tasks are they wanted to do, and having an open forum. Having an open

forum helps us to establish a stronger relationship with other office mates. Sharing of

ideas and helping each other can also help one another to enjoy and get to know each

other well. Inspiration gives us strength to accomplish a task and encouraging one one

another to be focused and motivated helps to grow workers in a better and successful

life.

TECHNICAL SKILLS

On-the-job training helped the trainee on improving not only their

interpersonal skills but also their technical skills. The training at General Services

Offices helped the trainee on how to encode different types of classified information

from gasoline receipts, requests of purchase orders, posting in Philgeps. The trainee

learned that encoding is not that easy as what they think because they are dealing with

the important information to be encoded. The trainee also learned how to operate a

scanner, a printer and a photocopying machine.

32
PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED

The trainee encountered some problems before and during the practicum

program. The problems encountered by the trainee is presented below.

Before Immersion

It is difficult to find a company that is accountable and responsible that are able to

accept trainees to have a first experience to work because not all companies cannot

accommodate the trainees.

During the Immersion

Problems that are encountered during are time management, the relationship with the

leaders, and misunderstanding of the instructions.

After Immersion

After completing the work, the trainee had no issues encountered the trainee has no

trouble getting along with the staff Work Immersion is the main strategy for

expanding students’ skill sets and raising workers productivity going forward. It is

very suitable for acquiring competence skills Special to a student, particularly jobs

that require.

33
CONCLUSION

Work Immersion is an important part of Senior High School that develops the
personality of an individual. It enlightens the students that what they learned in their
classrooms should be applied practically, to be able to see if they learned.

Work Immersion is a vast help for the students to be prepared to work in an actual
work place. Because some of the Interns actual tasks were not mentioned on reference
books in school. A courtesy in encoding of receipts, encoding of purchased order,
posting in Philgeps, canvassing, printing documents, filing files, and awarding are the
activities the interns have learned during the work immersion program. Aside from
those above-mentioned accomplishment, the Interns were even taught of the
appropriate attitude in the workplace, from the way the Interns ought to be presentable
to their co-students, to the employees who assisted them and mostly to the officials
who they encountered in this way the Interns had increased personality development.

RECOMMENDATIONS

For the Practicum Program

It is advantageous for the students to have this experience as part of the curriculum
for the Wok Immersion program. The trainees who participated in the Work
Immersion acquired knowledge and skills that were useful to them. To ensure that
they are properly prepared, the trainees suggest extending the Practicum Program
beyond a few weeks.

For the Future Trainees

The trainee suggests that future students should always dress appropriately and
arrive on time. They must take the initiative and willingly complete any tasks that are
given to them. They must always be prepared to support and aid the workers they are
collaborating with. Never forget to show respect.
