Principle of arts
The principle of art and design represent how an artist uses elements of art as a
tool to create help convey the artist’s intent. These principles are the rules and
guidelines that are considered when judging an artwork.
Artist and creators make more powerful works when they utilize the principles
of art, when viewers are familiar with the elements of art, they become more aware of
the details and can better appreciate what they see and the message behind it.
What is It
PRINCIPLE OF ART
The principles of visual art are the rules, tools and/or guidelines that artists use to
organize the elements of art in an artwork. When successfully combined with the
elements of art they aid in creating an appealing or interesting work of art. It boosts
visual literacy.
1. Balance – can be define as a sense of stability and is achieved when the visual
weight of objects is distributed equally within a composition. In visual design
whether its illustration, graphic design, photography, balance is one-way forms
and space relate to each other, which deal the positioning and proportion of
elements in a design as they relate to each other and to the entire design space.
Type of balance
• Symmetry – both sides of a composition have the same elements in the
same position, as in a mirror-image, or the two both sides of a face.
• Asymmetry – the composition is balanced due to the contrast of any of
the elements of art, example, a large circle in one side of a composition
might be balance by small square on the other side.
• Radial – elements are equally space around a central point as in the
spokes coming out of the hub of a bicycle tire.
Contrast in color
4
3. Rhythm – can be described as times movement through space, an easy
connected path along which the eye
follows a regular arrangement of
motifs. It is usually achieved through
repetition of lines, colors, shapes,
and other elements. Which creates a
visual tempo in artworks and
provides a path for the viewer’s eye to
follow.
Regular Rhythm
Type of Rhythm
• Regular rhythm – occurs when the intervals, or elements themselves are
similar in size or length, it repeats the element over a predictable interval.
• Flowing rhythm describes an artwork that contains curved circular
elements that give the movement, examples include flowers, clouds or
waves.
• Alternating rhythm describes an artwork that contains a repetition of two
or more components that are used interchangeably. examples light and
dark colors or placing various shapes and/or colors in a repeating pattern.
• Progressive rhythm describes an artwork that contains repeating elements
in a pattern that change either in size or color as they repeat. Example
include building blocks arrange from smallest to largest and spiral.
4. Emphasis a principle of art that makes one part of a work dominant over other
parts which is called focal point which is the first part of the work to attract viewer
attention.
Focal point refers to an are in the composition that has the most
significance, an area that the artist wants to draw attention of the viewer.
5. Harmony – refers to how well all the visual elements work together, which
involves the selection/design of elements that share a common trait, but there
should be variety to avoid monotony.
Harmony
5
7. Movement – is the result of using elements of arts such that they move the
viewer’s eye around and within the image, which can be created by diagonal or
curvy lines, either real or implied, by edges by the illusion of space by repetition
of energetic mark-making.
8. Proportion is a principle of art which is the relationship of the size of one element
when compare to one. Example, a basketball and baseball are different in scale
but share the same in proportion. It is important in any work of art if the
proportion is incorrect, the result is the mage will look less realistic.
10. Pattern – is the uniform repetition of any elements of art or any combination
thereof. Anything can be turned into a pattern through repetition.
11. Unity a principle of art occurs when all elements of a piece combine to make a balance
harmonious relationship, or completeness as a whole.
