Problem Statement
The Civil Engineering Department has decided to construct a single-story Conference Hall to facilitate
various academic and professional events. The Architect, after thorough consideration of the
requirements, aesthetics, and spatial configuration, has prepared the architectural design. The floor
plan, which illustrates the layout of the hall, is provided in Figure 1. The sizes of structural members have
been already fixed by the architect which have been shown in provided figure.

Figure 1: Floor Plan

Analysis & Design

Load on Slab
Dead load = load from PCC + load from mud layer

DL = (0.15 x 3/12) + (0.1 x 2/12)

DL = 0.0542 k/ft2

From table 4.3-1, ASCE 7-16

Uniform service Live load = 100 psf

LL = 0.1 k/ft2

Total service load on slab = 0.0542 + 0.1

Total service load on slab = 0.1542 k/ft2

Total factored load = 1.2DL + 1.6LL

Total factored load = (1.2 x 0.0542) + (1.6 x 0.1)

Total factored load = 0.23 k/ft2

Analysis & Design of Beam B1 for Flexure

Beam B1 will take load from half of the verandah width

Load on beam B1, Wu = 1.6(0.1 x 4) + 1.2((0.15 x ) + (0.0542 x 4))
144
Load on beam B1, Wu = 1.35 k/ft

As the beam is on the periphery, therefore, we can say that it is an L beam

bf = least of (bw + 6hf , bw + Sw/2 or bw + ln /12)

bf = least of (15 + 6x3, 15 + 96/2, 15 + 354/12)

bf = least of (33”, 63”, 44.5”)

bf = 33”

Analysis & Design of Beam B1 for Shear

Vu =

Vu = 20.76 kips

shear capacity of beam without reinforcement, i.e. Vc is given by

Vc = ∅2√𝑓𝑐 ′ bd

Vc = 0.65 x 2√3000 x 15 x 21.5

Vc = 22.96 kips > Vu → no stirrups required but

We will provide #3 bars at 12” spacing.

Analysis & Design of Column C1

Column C1 will take half load along the length of slab and half along the width plus weight of half beam
on each side of column

Axial load on C1, P = load from slab (LL + DL) + self weight of beam (DL)

P = [(0.1 x 30.75 x 4) + (0.0542 x 30.75 x 4)] + (0.15 x 30.75 x 15 x 24/144)

P = 30.5 kips

Pn = 1.6(12.3) + 1.2(18.19)

Pn = 41.51 kips

For steel area required,

Pn = Pu = ∅[0.85𝑓𝑐′ (𝐴𝑔 − 𝐴𝑠 ) + 𝐴𝑠 𝑓𝑦 ]

41.51 = 0.8 x 0.65 [0.85𝑥 3(225 − 𝐴𝑠 ) + 𝐴𝑠 𝑥 60]

79.83 = 573.75 – 2.55As + 60As

As = -8.6 → no steel required but we will provide minimum reinforcement

i.e. 0.01Ag

As = 0.01 x 225 = 2.25 in2

Using #5 bars,

N = 2.25/0.31  8 bars

Tie bar selection (using #3 bars)

Minimum of (48 x 3/8, 16 x 5/8, minimum column dimension)

Minimum of (18”, 10”, 15”) → 10” is OK.

Analysis & Design of Column Footing

Service loads on column will be from beams and slab

LL = 0.1 x 4 x 30.75 = 12.3 k (From table 4.3-1)

DL = (0.0542 x 4 x 30.75) + (0.15 x 30.75 x 15 x 24/144) = 18.19 k

Total service load will be

Ps = LL + DL = 12.3 + 18.19

Ps = 30.5 kips

Total factored load is

Pu = 41.51 kips

Assuming h to be 15”

And using #4 bar

davg = 15 – (3 + 4/16)

davg = 11.75”

Effective bearing capacity, qe is given by

qe = qa – [𝑐 h – (z − h)𝑠𝑜𝑖𝑙 ]

qe = 2.204 – [0.15 x 1.25 + (4 − 1.25) 𝑥 0.1]

qe = 1.742 k/ft2

Area of footing required will be

𝑃𝑠
Areq =
𝑞𝑒
30.5
Areq =
1.742
Areq = 17.51 ft2

For square footing,

Breq = 4.18 ft

We will provide 5 ft isolated square footing

So Aprovided = 25 ft2

Vup = qu [B2 – (c + davg)2]

Vup = 1.66 [52 – (1.25 + 11.75/12)2]

Vup = 33.25 kips

Shear check

𝑏𝑜 = 4(𝑐 + 𝑑𝑎𝑣𝑔 ) = 107”

∅𝑉𝑐𝑝 = 4 𝑥 0.75 √3000 𝑥 107 𝑥 11.75

As = 0.28 in2

Using #4 bars,

N = 1.62/0.2  9 bars

Spacing = 4.5 x 12/8 = 6.75” c/c
