Sequencing
1
Sequencing:
✓ It refers to setting priorities to orders to determine their
sequence in fulfillment
✓ For each order the followingi is calculated:
▪ Average time in the factory
▪ Average delay in delivery
▪ Average waiting time
✓ According to which the manager of the factory will determine
the sequence of order fullfilment.
There are four ways that according to which orders can be
prioritized:
1. Sequencing based on shortest time
2. Sequencing based on critical orders
3. Sequencing based on FIFO
4. Sequencing based on delivery date
2
Example 1:
A large furniture producer received the following 4 orders
Required:
Determine the sequence for order fulfillment under each of the
following priority rules
1. Sequencing based on shortest time
2. Sequencing based on critical orders
3. Sequencing based on FIFO
4. Sequencing based on delivery date
Production orders Processing time in days Delivery date
A 15 20
B 13 17
C 10 18
d 25 32
3
Solution:
Sequencing based on shortest time :
Orders are classified ascendingly from the shortest to longest
time
Orders Processing Finishing Delivery Delay in Waiting
time time date delivery time
c 10 10 18 - -
+
B 13 23 17 6 10
A 15 38 20 18 23
D 25 63 32 31 38
Total 63 134 - 55 71

As shown in the following table:
Based on the surplus time orders are ranked as:
B- A- D- C

D 25 53 32 21 28
C 10 63 18 45 53
Total 63 157 74 94
7
1. Average time in the factory
total Finishing time \ number of orders
157\4 = 39.25 days
2- Average delay in delivery
Total delay in delivery \ number of orders
74\4 = 18.50 days
3- Average waiting time:
Total waiting time \ number of orders
94 \ 4 = 23.50 days
Sequencing based on FIFO:
Since we do not know which order comes first, we will assume
that the orders are arranged from the oldest to the newest

3- Average waiting time:
Total waiting time \ number of orders

10
Sequencing based on delivery date:
Orders are arranged based on the priority of delivery dates
According to the example:
B, C, A, D
order Processing Finishing Delivery Delay in Waiting
time time date delivery time
B 13 13 17 - -
C 10 23 18 5 13
A 15 38 20 18 23

1. Average time in the factory
total Finishing time \ number of orders
137\4 = 34.25 days
2- Average delay in delivery
Total delay in delivery \ number of orders
54\4 = 13.5 days
3- Average waiting time:
Total waiting time \ number of orders
74\ 4 = 18.5 days
12
• The selection of the sequencing method is based on the
relative importance of the evaluation criteria as shown in
the following table
Sequencing Average time in Average delay Average waiting
method the factory time time
Shortest time 33.50 13.75 17.75
Critical order 39.25 18.50 23.50
FIFO 36 15.50 20.25
Delivery time 34.25 13.50 18.50
Choice Shortest time Delivery time Shortest time

Example 2:
A large textile factory receives the following five orders .if you
know that all orders are received at the same time and reach
order requires 1 operation only to be carried out.
Required:
Determine the sequence for order fulfillment under each of the
following priority rules
1. Sequencing based on shortest time
2. Sequencing based on critical orders
3. Sequencing based on FIFO
4. Sequencing based on delivery date
