Year 10 Woodwork definitions – Term 3 - 2022

1. Complete the definitions for the following areas: give an explanation for each one and an
image also.
a) Veneer – in relation to timber and furniture is a thin piece of wood.

b) Isometric drawing – a 3D representation of an object, building or design on a 2D surface.

c) Mortise and tenon joint - connects two pieces of wood or other material.

d) Proto-type – first versions of a device or vehicle from which other forms are developed .

e) Mitre joint - A joint made by joining two surfaces together, usually at a 45° angle, to form
a corner.
f) Dowel – peg that holds pieces of wood together.

g) Vice – heavy duty wood clamp that is attached to a workbench.

h) Clamp – tool that holds pieces of wood securely in place.

i) Pedestal drilling machine - a power tool that can be mounted to a stand or bolted to a
workbench or the floor.
j) 3D printer – a machine that creates a 3d digital model into a physical object.

k) Mig welding machine – uses electricity to melt and join pieces of metal.

2. Complete the following safety scenario and give response to how the problems would be
addressed.
A business that is not being run in a safe manner is need of a plan to address the issues that
need to be fixed by the company so that workers will not be at risk of serious injury.
This company makes furniture from timber and metal. Some of the metal parts are painted.
You will need to research 4 types of equipment use to make timber furniture (must be
powered) and two types of equipment used to make metal furniture (also powered). As part
of the scenario consider the risks associated with spray painting.
Firstly, state the possible problems caused in the workplace and risk associated with the
equipment being used.
Next come up with a plan to make this workplace safe for the workers. Part of the solution
will also involve the reduction of noise for the workers.
At least 3 paragraphs required. (This is not a group project).
