W. P.

Carey Financial Literacy Program

The skills necessary to navigate a healthy financial future are imperative to every student’s life-
long success. However, over 60% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck and have no ability to
set aside money for short-term or long-term financial goals, regardless of socioeconomic
background. Over time, financial illiteracy can lead to problems like poor spending habits and
unmanageable debt that can impact a person for the duration of their life.

The Financial Literacy Program at the W. P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University
(ASU) is guided by ASU’s charter, which reads, in part, that the university is “measured not by
whom we exclude, but by whom we include and how they succeed.” ASU recognizes financial
inclusion, a key enabler to reducing poverty and boosting prosperity, can be a valuable
cornerstone to driving student success.

Strictly speaking, financial inclusion is defined as access to and knowledge of useful and affordable
financial products, services, and practices. W. P. Carey employs a broader view of the term and
sees financial inclusion as a tool to advance equity and access, thus minimizing educational gaps
for the general population.

Mission: To ensure that students thrive both professionally and financially, W. P. Carey is
committed to leveling the financial playing field for students and underserved communities by
promoting financial inclusion in our programs, research endeavors, and community partnerships.

Vision: As a natural outgrowth of the ASU charter, this mission-driven program will pave
accessible pathways to professions in a sector that has been predominately white and expand
access to financial literacy education for all students, including those from traditionally
underrepresented or disadvantaged communities.
Through the development and implementation of the curriculum by W. P. Carey Finance
Department Chair, Dr. Laura Lindsey, and partnership with organizations such as the Phoenix
Union School District and Teach for America, we hope to empower young people to take control
of their financial future at an earlier age, limiting the barriers to educational and professional
success.

With your support of the Financial Literacy Program, W. P. Carey will be able to establish a
financially self-sufficient program, giving us the capacity to expand our reach and ensure
sustained growth. Furthermore, your gift will allow W. P. Carey to achieve the following:

• Elevate the quality of financial literacy education for area students.

• Empower students with the ability to advocate for themselves as well as for those
in their immediate community such as parents, siblings, or extended family.
• Build a reserve of philanthropic support which will alleviate any costs for students
as well as any barriers to engagement.
• Increase engagement with community stakeholders through conferences and on-
campus/virtual workshops.

The cost per student for this program is $158 - $25 registration fee and $133 to transfer the credit
to ASU upon successful completion. The pilot program will launch in Fall 2023 and will include a
class of 150 students at Camelback High School. Upon successful completion of the pilot, we will
look to begin expansion of this program throughout the Phoenix Union School District and,
subsequently, the state of Arizona.

We are grateful for your support and consideration of our

request. We look forward to future discussions.
