Assess Quality of Received
Materials or Components
(Exploratory Course)
Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our
dear learners, can continue your studies and learn while at home.
Activities, questions, directions, exercises, and discussions are
carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.
Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall
guide you step-by-step as you discover and understand the lesson
prepared for you.
Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on
lessons in each SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on
completing this module or if you need to ask your facilitator or
your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the lesson.
At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-
check your learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity
and test. We trust that you will be honest in using these.
In addition to the material in the main text, notes to the
Teacher are also provided to our facilitators and parents for
strategies and reminders on how they can best help you on your
home-based learning.
Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary
marks on any part of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in
answering the exercises and tests. And read the instructions
carefully before performing each task.
If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty
in answering the tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult
your teacher or facilitator.
Thank you.

Let Us Learn!

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to
help you master the concepts and procedures on how to assess quality of
received materials or components. The scope of this module permits it to be
used in many different learning situations. The language used recognizes the
diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons are also arranged to follow
the standard sequence of the course. But the order in which you read them
can be changed to correspond with the textbook you are now using.

This module has one lesson:

• Lesson 1- Assess Quality of Received Materials or Components

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. obtain work instructions in accordance with standard operating

procedures (TLE_IAEPAS9-12AQS-Ia-1.1);
2. carry out work in accordance with standard operating procedures
3. (TLE_IAEPAS9-12AQS-Ia-1.2);
4. check received materials or component parts against workplace
standards and specifications (TLE_IAEPAS9-12AQS-Ia-1.3);
5. isolate faults and faulty materials. (TLE_IAEPAS9-12AQS-Ia-1.4);
6. record and /or report faults and faulty materials to the supervisor
concerned in accordance with workplace procedures (TLE_IAEPAS9-
12AQS-Ia-1.5); and

INFORMATION SHEET

Congratulations! You have done a great job! Now you ready to learn how
to assess quality of received materials or components. Keep up the good work!

Quality Standards

What is Quality?

The term quality is defined in many terms such as: a general term
applicable to any trait or characteristic whether individual or generic. Some
think of quality superiority or excellence, lack of manufacturing defects and
others view quality as products feature or price. It is also defined as
conformance to specifications. Quality of conformance relates to the degree to
which a product meets certain design standards.

What is Standards?

It is defined to be as constituting or conforming to a standard especially

as established by law or custom. It is also described as something set up or
established by an authority as a rule for the measure of quantity, weight,
extent, value, or quality. Standards provide organizations with the shared
vision, understanding, procedures, and vocabulary needed to meet the
expectations of their stakeholders. Standards in the workplace are needed to
assure safety and the quality of the materials, components, and products, to
ensure that these are tailored-made for their purpose and promote the
operability of products and services.

What is Quality Standards?

Quality standards are defined as documents that provide requirements,

specifications, guidelines, or characteristics that can be used consistently to
ensure that materials, products, processes, and services are fit for their
purpose.

Principle of Quality Standards

1. Customer Focus
2. Leadership
3. Engagement of People
4. Process Approach
5. Improvement
6. Evidence Based Decision Making
7. Relationship Management

4
Assessing the quality of the received
materials or components makes a big
impact on the reliability and performance
of an electronic product. And to ensure
that there are no defects in in the quality
of the products, Standard Operating
Procedure (SOP) must be followed.
Standard Operating Procedure
(SOP) is essential to perform the job
properly and consistently to achieved
quality of the completed product from start

to finish.

To carry out work in assessing components received, the following

procedures should be considered:

A. Upon Receiving Materials/Components:

1. Ensure that the materials are destined to

be delivered in your department/section by
referring the notes on the packing slip.

2. Make sure of the quantity of the materials

that you will receive as indicated on the
purchase order.

Photos personally taken by Agnes Marian Alolor

3.Verify the items received by

checking the detailed information
and description of the values or
ratings of the materials or components
as packed.
Photos personally taken by Agnes Marian Alolor

5
B. Make an Inventory Report of the Materials/Components

All materials/components received must be documented through a list

and be reported to monitor how many of these are already on hand, purchased
and damaged or with faults. This process of assessing the quality of received
materials/components is very crucial for the performance and integrity of the
product to be assembled in electronics. You many use checklists or encode
data using the computer.

1. Record the date received, item

name, quantity of the materials/
components the specific description
of the material/component received
on the Inventory Report shown below.
The signature of the quality
checker is also needed after checking.

Photo is personally taken by the Agnes Marian Alolor

2. Identify if the materials are in a good

condition or damaged and /or needs
replacement. Examine for signs of
physical damage like cracks or
crushed parts. and when in doubt,
use the proper instrument to check
its condition. This will also be recorded
on the inventory report.

C. Recording/reporting of faults and faulty materials and components

If after the inventory there are faulty or defective materials/components

found, there is a need to record and report it using the table on Report on
Defective/Faulty Components or Materials with the following considerations:

1. Ensure sufficient information.

2. Identify the parameters of the

findings/faults.

Let Us Practice
Day 2

Did you understand the lesson above? Well, to check if you really
understand it, let us do the True of False activity.
Are you ready? Let us begin!

Activity 1.2 - IS IT TRUE or FALSE?

Direction: Read and understand the statement below. Write the word TRUE
if the statement is correct and FALSE if the statement is wrong. Write your
answer on a separate sheet of paper.

_____________ 1. Quality standards are important in assessing the quality of

received materials/components to ensure that materials,
products, processes, and services are fit for their purpose.

______________2. In replacing the faulty material/component, the replacement

should not correspond to the description of and value of the
replaced material/component.
.
______________3. Checking the quantity of materials/components received is
part of the receiving process in accordance with standard
operating procedures.

______________4. In assessing the quality of the component received, one

should not observe the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)
to achieved quality of the completed product from start
to finish.

______________5. An inventory report made in assessing the quality of received

components is important for the performance and integrity
of the product to be assembled in electronics.

9
Let Us Practice More
Day 3

Given the illustrations below, carefully check the physical appearance

of each component and document it through a list by filling up the table below
on Report on Inventory of Materials/Components. You may write your
answers on a separate sheet.
