PROXIMITY
Proximity is the principle that refers to the placement of
elements in relation to each other within a design.
Proximity is all about using visual space to
show relationships in your content.
Make sure that related items are
grouped together so that your design is
easier to understand.

5 BASIC PRINCIPLES

Simply means that one item is different

from another.
Contrast causes the eye to be drawn to a
particular area.
Contrast can guide the viewer’s eye to a focal
point, highlight important information and
add variety, or even drama, to a design.
SCHOOL OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
LAYOUT AND COMPOSITION

5 BASIC PRINCIPLES

Contrast refers to the arrangement

of different elements in a design to
create visual interest and
hierarchy. It is the difference
between two or more elements in a
design, such as color, size, shape,
texture, or style.

CONTRAST
Types of Contrast

Color Contrast - difference in color between different elements in a design,

such as the background and foreground, or between two or more graphic
elements.

Size contrast - This is the difference in size between different elements in a

design. By using different sizes, designers can create a visual hierarchy and
draw the viewer's attention to specific areas of the design.

CONTRAST
Types of Contrast

Shape contrast - This is the difference in shape between different elements

in a design. Using contrasting shapes can create visual interest and make
the design stand out.

Texture contrast - This is the difference in texture between different

elements in a design. Using contrasting textures can create depth and visual
interest.

REPITITION
This involves the repeating of visual elements such as colors, shapes, lines,
textures, patterns, or typography.
It creates a sense of unity and cohesiveness in a design, drawing the
viewer's attention to specific elements and establishing a visual rhythm.
Repetition can be used to create a sense of consistency throughout a design,
making it easier for the viewer to navigate and understand the content.
It can also be used to emphasize certain elements or to create a visual
hierarchy, guiding the viewer's eye through the design.

BACKTRACK & ANALYZE
VD100
Now that you have determined the 5 basic principles, take a look at your
previous activity.

Did you apply all of these principles correctly?

Are you missing some principles within your design?
Note possible weakness in your design so that the next design will be better.

The Design Space

Design space refers to the area where a design is created, and it includes
everything from the physical environment to the tools and software used to
create the design.

The Design Space

Physical Space
This refers to the physical environment
where the design is being created. The
physical space should be comfortable
and conducive to creativity. It should be
well-lit, quiet, and free from distractions.
Having a comfortable chair and desk, as
well as access to natural light and fresh
air, can also help.

Tools
In graphic design, the tools you use
to create your designs are important.
This includes software like Adobe
Creative Suite, as well as hardware
like a graphics tablet or a high-
quality monitor. It's important to use
tools that are reliable and
comfortable to use.

ACTIVITY Part2
MOBILE PHOTOGRAPHY
VD100

Now that you have a brief knowledge about composition ,follow the
instructions below.
• Form a group with 5 members.
• Each group must compile 20 photos taken with your mobile phones.
• Compile the images in a PowerPoint presentation stating the story(description),
and analysis behind each photos
• Post-process is allowed.
• You will present and explain your presentations next meeting.
• This activity will be scored by a grading rubric.
