Introduction: Holy Week in 2 Minutes by Busted Halo and / or Bishop Burbidge’s Holy Week
challenge (see links below)

Why Holy? Because we relive Jesus’ Passion, Death, and Resurrection during these days – the
PEAK of our FAITH as Catholics. It is Holy because of Jesus’ supreme sacrifice for our salvation.
Going through the Gospel Readings these days, we find the deeper meaning of our celebration.
We may be very familiar with the story of this week. But the Church teaches us that we need

FORMATION MODULE
to hear it over and over again in the Light of the Holy Spirit’s wisdom that we may discover the
Good News embedded in Jesus’ passion and death. Let us go through each day!

1. The 5th week of Lent is called Passiontide because the readings already foretell Jesus’
suffering. It is customary that on the Saturday before the 5 th Sunday of Lent images are
being covered with Violet cloth to signify Jesus’ hiding Himself among the crowds. As for
the crucifix, it is customary that only the corpus is veiled while the beams of the cross
are still shown. In some churches the veiling is done on or before the Thursday of this
week when the Gospel (John 8:51-59) says “Jesus hid and went out…” (see ORDO and
video link below PASSIONTIDE Special Feature:Veiling of Crucifixes, Icons and Statues).

2. Palm Sunday / Passion Sunday – such titles are given to this day due to the 2 Gospel
readings we proclaim on this day.

a. First is the triumphant entry into Jerusalem at the blessing of palms when done
outside the church (A: Matthew 21: 1-11, B: Mark 11: 1-10 or John 12: 12-16, C:
Luke 19: 28-40).
b. Second is the Passion Narrative at the Liturgy of the Word (A: Matthew 26:14-
27:66 or 27:11-54, B: Mark 14:1-15:47 or 15:1-39, C: Luke 22:14-23:56 or 23:1-
49) with a part where we kneel at Jesus’ death.
c. IN THE LITURGY SERVERS MUST TAKE NOTE OF THE FOLLOWING (see
Sacramentary and Ordo notes for details) If form 1 or 2 is used for the
blessing of palms
i. All images are veiled the day/night before with violet / purple cloth. As
for the crucifix, it is customary that only Jesus is veiled while the beams
of the cross are still shown. In some churches the veiling is done earlier.
(see ORDO)
ii. Prepare 2 sacramentary copies, 1 each for the outside of the church
and the sanctuary so that movement will be faster and easier for servers.
If there is only 1 sacramentary in church, ASK THE PRIEST IN
CHARGE / CELEBRANT if he wishes to use the misalette for the
blessing part.
iii. The Priest may wear a Red cope during the first part then change
into a red chasuble before entering the church, or he may wear the
chasuble all throughout.
iv. Incense is used ONLY FROM THE GOSPEL OF THE ENTRY INTO
JERUSALEM UPTO THE BLESSING OF THE ALTAR as the priest
enters the Sanctuary (Ordo note #7 or 8 of Palm Sunday)
v. Likewise, candles / torches are NOT USED DURING THE GOSPEL
OF THE LORD’S PASSION (Ordo note of Palm Sunday) but are used as
usual during the processions, offertory, and Gospel of the Entry into
Jerusalem.
vi. Processional Crucifix and candle holders are decorated with palms
and red cloth /ribbons (Ordo note of Palm Sunday)
vii. Bells are in a toned down mood. No continuous or high pitch bells
during processional and consecration. Single, solid toned bells are
recommended for use. This is to emphasize the Passion and Sacrificial
tone of the celebration of the Eucharist.

RLREYES & JCTEXON Page 2

SALESIAN YOUTH MOVEMENT - KNIGHTS OF THE ALTAR
FORMATION MODULE
viii. Holy Water must be prepared in the blessing area.
ix. Servers assigned as clerics / helpers, who do not bear any item during
procession are to bring palms. The MC assists the 12 apostles and
lectors, while the Main Servers assist the Priest/s.
x. Upon reaching the sanctuary after procession, the main server must be
prepared with the sacramentary as the priest starts with the Collect /
Opening Prayer because the Sign of the Cross happens before the
blessing of Palms and the Blessing takes the place of the Kyrie (see
sacramentary).

If form 3 is used, do not use incense and still follow iv-ix.

d. IN THE PHILIPPINE CONTEXT:

i. The chosen 12 apostles accompany the priest during the Mass (at the
designated slot) also bearing palm branches.
ii. In some parishes when form 1 entrance is used, the parishioners’ even
lay down blankets or shawls on the path where the priest will walk or a
red carpet is placed from the outside of the church to the sanctuary to
symbolize kingship and to reenact the Gospel passage.
iii. The prayer chanting of the Pabasa / Pasyon starts after the last Mass of
this day and continue up to Holy Wednesday evening or noon of Holy
Thursday.
iv. The senakulo / passion play is also staged starting this day up to Holy
Wednesday (preferably).
v. This is also called Alay Kapwa Sunday where in 2nd collections for the
poor are done.

3. Holy Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday’s readings focus on Isaiah’s Prophetic songs of
God’s Suffering Servant and Matthew and John’s Gospel narratives of the plots to kill
Jesus. These days also mark the 40th day of our Lenten Journey.
a. Holy Monday: Isaiah 42:1-7 introduces the Suffering Servant and his mission.
John 12:1-11 narrates an episode in Bethany when Mary anoints Jesus’ feet with
costly perfume to which Judas reacts. The Chief priests’ plot is revealed at the
end.
b. Holy Tuesday: Isaiah (49:1-6) further presents the Suffering Servant as one who
is focused on doing the Father’s will despite the odds. Traitor Tuesday as it is
fondly called by many priests because the Gospel of John narrates the meal
where Jesus tells of his betrayal by Judas and denial by Peter (John 13:21-33,
36-38).
c. Holy or Spy Wednesday: Isaiah 50:4-9 foretells the intense Suffering of this
Servant of God. Matthew 26:14-25 continues the theme of betrayal.
d. IN THE PHILIPPINE CONTEXT: Pasyon / Pabasa and Senakulo continues during
these days. Parishes may also organize the Parish wide Stations of the Cross
(Istasyon Heneral) and Passion Procession during these days. Kumpisalang
Bayan, Retreats and recollections are also organized during these days.

4. Paschal Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday-Easter Vigil) This is also
called THE HOUR OF JESUS.

RLREYES & JCTEXON Page 3

SALESIAN YOUTH MOVEMENT - KNIGHTS OF THE ALTAR
FORMATION MODULE
a. Triduum = 3 days = 3 most important days in Jesus’ Life and in Our Faith as
Catholic Christians.
b. Paschal = The word "paschal" is the equivalent of Greek "pascha" and is derived
from Aramaic "pasḥā" and Hebrew "pesaḥ", meaning "the passing over" (cf. Ex
12:13.23.27; cf. Is 31, 5). The origin is not known. Some scholars refer to
Assyrian "pasah" –appease or Egyptian "pa-sh" – remembrance or "pē-sah" – the
blow. The Bible links "pesaḥ" with "pāsaḥ" – two literal meanings are: to limp
and to perform a ritual dance around a sacrifice (1 K 18:21.26). Figuratively it
may be understood, "to jump", "to pass", "to spare". It refers to the passage of
God on the Passover night, when the Israelites left Egypt. God struck the houses
of Egyptians and left the Israelites untouched, i.e. passed over.

c. IN THE PHILIPPINE CONTEXT: Being the largest Catholic country in Asia, Holy
Thursday afternoon up to Easter Sunday are usually declared as non-working
holidays so that Catholics may fully take part in this peak celebration of faith.

5. Holy or Maundy Thursday / Huwebes Santo Liturgical Color: WHITE

a. Why Moundy? This recalls the episode of Jesus’ agony I the Garden wherein He
prayed leaning on a big stone / land mass (mound) and His sweat became like
drops of blood.
b. Today Jesus institutes the 2 Sacraments of His Love and Service that cannot
exist without the other – Holy orders and the Holy Eucharist.
c. The Chrism Mass is celebrated by the Bishop of the Diocese with all the clergy.
This is where the priests renew their vows and where the oils for the sick,
baptism, and confirmation are blessed and distributed. This takes place usually
early morning at the cathedral.
d. The Mass of the Lord’s Supper is celebrated in the Evening of this day
highlighted by the washing of the feet to emphasize that Jesus came to Serve
and not to be served, and to give His life as a ransom for many. Accordingly 12
men (and women) of good repute and who fit into the Church’s theme for this
year’s celebration (e.g. 2016 Year of Mercy) to represent the apostles. Recently,
Pope Francis has allowed women to be chosen for this role. (see article below)

e. IN THE LITURGY SERVERS MUST TAKE NOTE OF THE FOLLOWING (see

Sacramentary and Ordo notes for details)
i. Prepare all things needed ahead of time. Have a full team of servers
ready. Practice beforehand. Consult your priest in charge for
customs, traditions, and variations for the washing of the feet
and reposition of the Blessed Sacrament.
ii. Prepare double quantity of hosts for consecration because there is
no Mass but there is Holy Communion on Good Friday.
iii. The Bells are used Only for the Gloria but not during Eucharistic Prayer
and Consecration. It will only be used again on the Gloria of the Easter
Vigil onward. This silence of bells signals THE HOUR OF JESUS as John’s
Gospel puts it. This also tells the faithful that this is an extraordinary,
solemn, and silent occasion wherein we have to unite ourselves with
Jesus’ passion.

RLREYES & JCTEXON Page 4

SALESIAN YOUTH MOVEMENT - KNIGHTS OF THE ALTAR
FORMATION MODULE
iv. During the washing of the feet, servers must be attentive if the towel or
basin needs to be changed and if the ewer / pitcher needs to be refilled.
Assign 2 servers to assist the priest with his vestments. Assign 2-4
servers for the washing (1 each for the ewer, basin, and towel and a
prompter).
v. The Mass goes as usual except that after ablution, the ciboria containing
the Blessed Sacrament for Good Friday’s communion will be placed inside
a hidden chapel, preferably that of the priest’s convent. These will be
brought back to the sacristy before communion of the next day. A server
bearing an extra candle (not a processional one) accompanies the
ministers for this. The ciborium for procession and reposition will be left
on the altar. So, it is preferred that after communion, the servers hold
the sacramentary and microphone.

vi. Right after the post communion prayer there is no blessing and sign of
the Cross. Servers prepare for the benediction and reposition of the
Blessed Sacrament which usually takes the following order:
1. Main Servers assist the main celebrant who puts on the
humeral veil and cope while the 12 apostles, cross and
candle bearers, torch bearers, and other ministers bearing
the canopy kneel and wait in line along the aisle. (Consult
your priest in charge for the sequence of procession and
reposition.)
2. The Thurifer and boat bearer approach the priest main celebrant
who puts incense into the burning coal. Then all kneel.
3. The procession to the repository follows with the Blessed
Sacrament usually at the middle of the long line. Thurifer be
ready to walk backward as you continually incense the Blessed
Sacrament while walking. A server may be assigned to guide his
steps.
4. At the repository venue, a server awaits the arrival of the Blessed
Sacrament at the entrance and sets aside the canopy while
another server holds a second thurible with burning coals near the
repository. This is to ensure a smooth and silent movement.
5. Once the Blessed Sacrament arrives at the repository, all proceed
to their places and kneel. The main servers with the microphone
and benediction text stands beside the priest while the thurifer
and boat bearer wait on the other side. The usual benediction
follows. All remain silent in adoration until the priest stands and
proceeds to the sacristy with the servers, ministers, and apostles.
6. Adoration goes on until midnight. Some KOA may be assigned to
assist the priest as he takes the Blessed Sacrament to the chapel
where the other ciboria are placed. The tabernacle is left empty
and open.
7. As SYM KOA Saint John Bosco encourages us to allot time (for at
least 40 minutes to 1 hour) of personal Adoration.

RLREYES & JCTEXON Page 5

SALESIAN YOUTH MOVEMENT - KNIGHTS OF THE ALTAR
FORMATION MODULE
f. IN THE PHILIPPINE CONTEXT: Pasyon / Pabasa ends during this day. Visita
Iglesia is also done in 7 nearby churches this night as the Blessed Sacrament is
Adored until midnight. This is in response to Jesus’ invitation to His apostles to
stay and pray with Him in the garden. Confession is also available this day.

6. Good Friday / Biyernes Santo Liturgical Color: Red

a. Why do we call this day Good? Simply put, God is so Good that in His Goodness
He wished to restore the natural goodness of man by the passion and death of
Jesus – the Good Shepherd and Goodness incarnate.
b. The Stations of the Cross is prayed during this day. Confession is also available.
c. THERE IS NO MASS DURING THIS DAY! Red is used to signify both the Royalty
of the Suffering King and His Bloodshed which saves us.
d. At the Hour of Mercy (3:00pm) the Liturgy of the Lord’s Passion is celebrated in
the following order: (see the Sacramentary for more details)
i. Liturgy of the Word
ii. Veneration of the Cross
iii. Holy Communion
e. IN THE LITURGY SERVERS MUST TAKE NOTE OF THE FOLLOWING (see
Sacramentary and Ordo notes for details)
i. Maximum of 7-8 servers are needed. These assigned servers must be
quick and attentive. Only a few will be in the sanctuary but all servers
must attend this celebration of The Lord’s Passion.
ii. The processional cross and candles are not used both in the entrance and
the Liturgy of the word. The candles will accompany the crucifix during
unveiling and veneration.
iii. Incense and bells are not used.
iv. The tabernacle is bare and left open. The Sanctuary lamp/light is off.
The Blessed Sacrament for communion is secured either in the sacristy’s
repository or a nearby chapel/prayer room.
v. There are no Offertory, Sanctus, Eucharistic Prayer, and
Consecration. That’s why we don’t have Mass this day!
vi. After or during the veneration, the servers quickly place the cloths,
sacramentary, microphone, and candles on the altar. Then the
priests/ministers assisted by a candle bearer bring in the Blessed
Sacrament consecrated last Thursday night. The Communion rite follows.
The recessional is simple and silent.
vii. Consult your priest in charge as to where and how the crucifix will be
placed after veneration. If the Crucifix is laid on red cushion/s at the foot
of the altar, place 5 candles 1 near each of Jesus’ wounds.
viii. This day we genuflect not at the tabernacle but at the Crucifix.

f. IN THE PHILIPPINE CONTEXT:

i. The Tenebrae is prayed before noon.
ii. The 7 Last words are meditated on from Noon till before 3:00PM.
iii. The PRUSISYON NG PAGLILIBING ng SANTO INTIERO is done after
veneration in parishes with Mary- Mater Dolorosa, Mary Magdalene, John,
Nicodemus, and Joseph of Arimathea’s images accompanying

RLREYES & JCTEXON Page 6

SALESIAN YOUTH MOVEMENT - KNIGHTS OF THE ALTAR
FORMATION MODULE
iv. The traditional Penitensiya (penitents flogging themselves) and
Pagpapako sa krus (penitents having themselves crucified) are usually
done in provinces, particularly in Central Luzon (see ppt for pictures).
This practice is not recommended by the Catholic Bishops (see articles
below) but some namamanata (devotees) insist, and therefore are
advised that sorrow for ones sins need not be physically hurting but more
of an inward process.

g. FASTING AND ABSTINENCE IS REQUIRED OF ALL CATHOLICS AS A SIGN OF

UNITY WITH CHRIST’S PASSION AND DEATH.

7. Why Black Saturday?

a. AN ANCIENT HOMILY EXPLAINS…

The Lord's descent into hell

"What is happening? Today there is a great silence over the earth, a great
silence, and stillness, a great silence because the King sleeps; the earth was in
terror and was still, because God slept in the flesh and raised up those who were
sleeping from the ages. God has died in the flesh, and the underworld has
trembled.

Truly he goes to seek out our first parent like a lost sheep; he wishes to visit
those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death. He goes to free the
prisoner Adam and his fellow-prisoner Eve from their pains, he who is God, and
Adam's son.

The Lord goes in to them holding his victorious weapon, his cross. When Adam,
the first created man, sees him, he strikes his breast in terror and calls out to all:
'My Lord be with you all.' And Christ in reply says to Adam: ‘And with your spirit.’
And grasping his hand he raises him up, saying: ‘Awake, O sleeper, and arise
from the dead, and Christ shall give you light…’”
(see link below for full text from the Vatican)

b. IN THE LITURGY: There is no Mass or any other sacrament celebrated during

this day except Confession. We still genuflect before the Crucifix. All other
images remain veiled till midnight.
c. IN THE PHILIPPINE CONTEXT: Sabado de Gloria as we call it because of the
Easter Vigil that we celebrate on Saturday night

8. On the 3rd day He Rose Again? The Jews during Jesus’ time count sunrise to sunset as
one day and moon rise to dawn as another. Thus from Friday night to Saturday Morning
is one day and so Saturday Morning to Saturday evening is another day. Thus, the 3 rd
day is Saturday night till dawn of Easter Sunday (the day after the Sabbath). This is the
Easter Vigil
a. This is the MOTHER OF ALL VIGILS and THE NIGHT OF ALL NIGHTS
b. This is divided into 4 parts that are briefly explained (see sacramentary and ordo
for details)

RLREYES & JCTEXON Page 7

SALESIAN YOUTH MOVEMENT - KNIGHTS OF THE ALTAR
FORMATION MODULE
i. Service of Light – the Paschal candle is prepared and lit from the blessed
fire. THE LIGHT OF CHRIST… THANKS BE TO GOD!
ii. The Liturgy of the Word – Recalling Salvation History form the Old
Testament, we hear 7 Readings, Psalms, and Prayers. The Gloria is
sung the candles are lit, joyful bells are rung, and a joyful Collect is
prayed. Then Saint Paul’s Epistle is Read followed by Psalm 118 with
Alleluia as its response. More Alleluia is sung as we acclaim the Gospel of
the Resurrection.
iii. The Liturgy of Baptism – This takes the Place of the Apostles’ / Nicene
Creed. The priest blesses the water and the people who are to be
baptized adults or baptized Catholics like us who renew our vows.
iv. The Liturgy of the Eucharist – Eucharistic Prayer 1 is used. The Mass
goes as usual but Ends with a Resounding Alleluia!

c. IN THE LITURGY SERVERS MUST TAKE NOTE OF THE FOLLOWING (see

Sacramentary and Ordo notes for details)
i. The color GOLD is used this season to signify the Primacy of this Season
and the radiance of Christ’s Light.
ii. A FULL TEAM OF ALERT SERVERS IS NEEDED FOR THIS EVENT. Practice
with the priest celebrant is highly recommended.
iii. Prepare everything that is required for the liturgy way ahead of time.
Add to your list a flashlight for the servers who will assist in the service of
light.
iv. TIP 1: Once the servers have lit their candles from the Paschal candle,
light a vigil candle in a glass and keep it in the sacristy / backstage to be
used for the lighting of candles during the Gloria. All the candles for the
altar processional candle holders, and torches are kept in the
sacristy/back stage for easier mobilization. As the Reading from Saint
Paul is being read, the servers assigned to light and bring out the candles
prepare themselves. They light the candles from the candle that was lit
from the Paschal Candle. When the Gloria is prompted, they bring out
the candles and put them in place.
v. TIP 2: Have 2 Emcees for the Liturgy of the Word so that they alternately
accompany the readers and psalmists.
vi. TIP 3: During the liturgy of Baptism assign 2 servers at the font to
prepare Holy Water in the sprinkling buckets/bottles. They will also join
the priest’s as he/they bless/es the people.
vii. RECOMMENDED: Candles are not used during the Gospel IF THE
PASCHAL CANDLE IS BESIDE THE AMBO. This is to Highlight that
CHRIST IS THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD. Have the communion plate (and
torch) bearers go to their places for communion during the Agnus Dei
and kneel there facing the altar.

d. IN THE PHILIPPINE CONTEXT: The Salubong is done right after the Vigil Mass
or at the break of dawn depicting the meeting of the Risen Jesus and his Mother.
Traditionally 2 processions are being held from 2 points, the men with the Image
of Jesus and the women with Mary’s image vailed in black or dark Violet lace.
Once the 2 meet at the front of the church, a child dressed as an angel removes

Mary’s veil to reveal her smiling face and bright vestment that signifies the
transition from sorrow to joy! Then the Regina Coeli is prayed/chanted.

2. Evaluation: Serve With the Church

As part of the Salesian Youth Movement, we are encouraged to keep our Holy Week
observance solemn and summer vacation busy, and put more value to our Service -
Diakonia (apart from serving at Mass – social aspect). Join your parish’s Holy Week and
Easter activities, help out in preparing needed things for the Liturgy. Volunteer to serve in
daily Mass this vacation. Make sure that you will attend / serve the Holy week Liturgy
starting from Palm Sunday up to Easter Sunday. Set aside personal gimmicks as your
personal commitment and sign that serving is your priority. Go to confession this season of
before Easter.

TRIVIA: Saint John Bosco was canonized on an Easter Sunday and he believes that The Risen
Lord is the Source and Sustenance of all the Salesian works.

Conclude the meeting with the prayer after serving (old handbook), or David Haas’ The Servant
Song (see link below).
