During photosynthesis, light energy is used to split water molecules (H2O) into
hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen is combined with carbon dioxide (CO2) absorbed
from the air to produce glucose (C6H12O6), while the oxygen is released as a
byproduct. This oxygen sustains most life on Earth.
The process takes place primarily in the chloroplasts of plant cells, which contain
light-absorbing pigments like chlorophyll. Two stages are involved: the light-
dependent reactions which occur in the thylakoid membranes, and the light-
independent reactions (also known as the Calvin cycle) which take place in the
stroma.
Photosynthesis is vital for removing CO2 from the atmosphere and generating the
oxygen and organic compounds that heterotrophs, including humans, depend on.
Without this elegant process constantly occurring on a massive scale, most life on
Earth could not exist.
