How to Enable the Flesch-Kincaid Readability Scale

For Outlook

1. Open Outlook and click on “File” in the command ribbon.

2. Under file click on “Options”.

3. Under “Options” select “Mail”.


4. Under “Mail” click on “Spelling and Autocorrect…”

5. Make sure the Show readability statistics” box is checked. Then click on OK.
6. To use this tool when writing an e-mail simply click on the Review tab in the command ribbon
and then click on Spelling & Grammar button.

7. After the tool is done checking your e-mail for spelling and grammar mistakes, it will display a
summary box that looks like this. The Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level is at the bottom of this box.
For Word

1. Open a file in Word

2. Under “File” on the command ribbon, select “Options”.


3. On the “Word Options” menu, select “Proofing”. Make sure the “Show readability statistics”
box is checked. Then click on OK.
4. To use this tool when writing a document simply click on the Review tab in the command ribbon
and then click on Spelling & Grammar button.

5. After the tool is done checking your document for spelling and grammar mistakes, it will display
a summary box that looks like this. The Flesch Reading Ease and Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level are
at the bottom of this box.
