THE REALITY
Our children live in a world of powerful 24/7
media. There has been a drastic increase in the
amount of time children and youth are spending
with media over the last decade. Children ages 8 to
18 now spend an average of 7 hours and 38
minutes per day with entertainment media outside
of school, according to recent research.

technologies that reach a
large audience via mass
communication.

the mass media refers to the ability of
the media to help relax people and
create a means of escape from the stress
of everyday life. The entertainment
function of mass media has both positive
and negative effects.
TYPES OF MASS MEDIA
Have you ever wondered how the latest
news and information was communicated
in the past? Before there was the
Internet, television, or the radio, there
was the newspaper. The newspaper
was the original platform for mass
media.
MEDIA LITERACY
Media literacy is the ability to:
✓ access the media
✓ understand and critically evaluate media content
✓ create communications / produce messages

Media literacy cares about how people comprehend, interpret ,


analyze and compose media messages.
MEDIA LITERACY
Children and youth especially adolescents are exposed to a large
amount of media messages for entertainment through television,
internet, music, movies and videogames. Therefore, media literacy
plays a role in the socialization when children and youth are
exposed to these messages.
Entertainment leads to socialization
There is a need to understand the media work and citizens
should know the political, ideological, economic and cultural
dimensions of media.
