Bevezető
azért a testesültség erős változatát veszi górcső alá, mert valójában csak
ez tekinthető a kogníció új felfogásának. Mik tehát az állítások, ame-
lyek a testesültséget a mentális világ figyelemre méltó elméletévé teszik?
A testesültség erős verziójának központi eleme, hogy az elmeműkö-
dés sem tartalmait, sem műveleteit illetően nem elvont, szimbolikus
szinten szerveződik, hanem alapvetően perceptuális, illetve „testi” vagyis
testesült (Gallese és Lakoff 2005, Lakoff és Johnson 1999). Tehát minden
magasabbnak tekintett kognitív funkció valamilyen módon az érzéki ta-
pasztalatokra vezethető vissza, és a szenzomotoros működésekért fele-
lős agyterületek révén valósul meg – nem pedig matematikai művelete-
ken, és változókon alapuló információfeldolgozás révén (Marcus 2001).
Noha Lakoff és Johnson (Lakoff és Johnson 1999), illetve követőik (pl.
Evans et al. 2007, Kövecses és Benczes 2010) gyakran forradalmian új
megközelítésről beszélnek, valójában az eszmetörténet egyik legrégebbi
vitája jelenik meg itt új köntösben: mik is az elme tartalmai? Valami-
lyen módon eleve adottak, belsőlegesek, ahogyan az ideák Platónnál,
vagy az érzékelésből és a tapasztalásból, a külvilágból származnak-e,
ahogyan Arisztotelész tanította? Ez a kérdés ölt alakot a racionalisták
(pl. Descartes) és az empiristák (pl. Berkeley) polémiájában, de a pszi-
chológia mint önálló diszciplína első (és eldönthetetlen) vitáját is ez
képezte: gondolkodásunk vajon képi (Wundt és a Lipcsei iskola, illetve
Titchener a New York-i Cornellen), avagy kép nélküli, elvont (pl. Bühler,
illetve Külpe és a Würzburgi iskola) (Ogden 1911)? Később, az 1960-as
évektől Piaget és Quine hangsúlyozták a szenzomotoros működés elsőd-
legességét, legalábbis a pszichológiai fejlődés során, szemben Chomsky
és Fodor innátizmusával; majd az 1970-es évektől kezdve a kérdés az év-
tizedes, úgynevezett képzelet-vita formájában öltött testet, ahol Pylyshyn
álláspontja szerint a mentális képek epifenomenálisak, melléktermékei,
kísérőjelenségei csupán az idegszövet által a látás során végrehajtott
komputációknak (Pylyshyn 1973, Pylyshyn 2003), míg Kosslyn sze-
rint a mentális képek maguk a reprezentációs formák, a mentális mű-
veletek tartalmai (Kosslyn 1994). Ez az örök vita nem csupán az elme
tartalmainak kérdése körül forog: számos további filozófiai álláspontot
rejt magában a tanulás szerepére, az elme működésére vagy a tudás ere-
detét firtató öröklés-környezet vitára vonatkozóan, amelyek mintegy
csomagban érkeznek vele. Amikor a testesültség elmélete a mentális
reprezentációk tartalmaként az észlelést, a mentális műveletek és a fo-
galmi rendszer helyszínéül pedig a szenzomotoros rendszereket jelöli
meg, ebben az eszmetörténeti dilemmában is állást foglal: az örökléssel

Szenzomotoros nyelv
is, hogy mi az a csak az emberre jellemző elem, ami a (szűken vett, embe-
ri) nyelvet lehetővé teszi. Chomsky szerint ez a merge művelete (Berwick
és Chomsky 2011) (korábban a rekurzió), de Lakoff nem kínál megfejtést
arra, hogy mi teszi lehetővé az emberi nyelvet csak az embernél. Ha össze-
sen annyit állít, hogy a nyelv a szenzomotoros rendszer miatt nem emberi
találmány, akkor felmerül a kérdés: miért nem beszélnek legalább az em-
berszabásúak, évtizedekig tartó tanítás után sem? Ez az állítás ilyen for-
mában épp olyan üres, mint az, hogy nincs nyelvi modul, pláne anélkül,
hogy részletes magyarázatot kapnánk az erre utaló jelenségek tág körére.
