Philippines
By
about 30,000 BCE, the Negritos, who became the ancestors of today's
aboriginal Filipinos
(such as the
Aeta), probably lived in the archipelago. No evidence has survived
which
would
indicate details of ancient Filipino life such as their crops, culture, and
architecture.
Hist
orian William Henry Scott noted any theory which describes such details
for the period must
be pure hypothesis, and thus be
honestly presented as such.
The
Negritos are Filipino indigenous peoples with a hunter-gatherer
background, dating back
over
50,000 years. They have dark-colored skin, curly or kinky hair, and a
small-bodied physique.
Their
lifestyle revolves around hunting and gathering, relying on local flora
and fauna. Their
indigen
ous languages contain valuable information about insects, plants, and
animals. However,
the
disappearance of native languages due to logging, mining, and urban
migration threatens this
unique
knowledge. Negrito communities are focusing on preserving their
cultural heritage.

THE IGOROTS
Igorot people, an indigenous ethnolinguistic group in the Cordillera
region
of the Philippines, have a rich cultural heritage. They have bronzed skin,
high
cheekbones, almond-shaped eyes, and straight black hair. Their
traditional
clothing is practical, with woven garments made from pineapple fibers,
abaca,
or cotton. Tattoos serve as symbols of status and tribal identity. The
Igorot people
are known for their resilience and adaptability to their mountainous
environment.
They engage in farming, weaving, and metalworking, with houses made
of wood
and bamboo raised on stilts. Their religious practices blend indigenous
beliefs with
elements of folk Christianity. They hold festivals and celebrations,
reflecting their
agricultural lifestyle.
THE MANOBOS
The Manobo people, an indigenous community in Bitaugan, have a rich
cultural heritage rooted in tradition, values, and harmony with nature.
Their clothing reflects their connection to the land, with men wearing
loincloths and women wearing woven skirts and blouses. They practice
kumbiti,
a unique marriage arrangement, involving parental involvement and
respect.
The Manobos are known for their generosity and peaceful coexistence
with nature.
Elders play a crucial role in passing down cultural practices to younger
generations.
However, their isolation in Bitaugan poses challenges in preserving
their cultural heritage.
Government programs like the Modified Conditional Cash Transfer for
Indigenous People
and Community Family Development Sessions help Manobos adapt
while preserving their beliefs.
THE AUSTRONESIANS
More than 7,000 years ago, long after the ice that covered the world
melted, the
resulting rise in the sea level ushered in the arrival of another group
of people, the
Austronesians. They came to Southeast Asia by boats from Southern
China.
They had brown skin (kayumanggi).
