HYDRAULICS

TOTAL HYDROSTATIC FORCE ON SURFACES

Prepared By: Engr. Brian Eurolfan

Hydrostatic Force on Curved Surface
- The hydrostatic force is always
perpendicular to the surface
F

- That concept is also applicable if the

surface is curved

- For curved surface, we can treat the

hydrostatic force into a resultant where
FH
we can divide into its vertical and
horizontal components F
Fv
Hydrostatic Force on Curved Surface
Since F is the resultant of FH and Fv LIQUID BELOW THE BODY / CURVED SURFACE

F=√ FH 2 + Fv 2

FH – Total hydrostatic force on a plane area which is the FH

projection of the curved surface into a vertical plane.
F
Fv
FH = γ hഥ A

Fv – Weight of the liquid (real or imaginary) extending LIQUID ABOVE THE BODY / CURVED SURFACE
from the curved surface upward to the liquid surface.

W Fv
from γ= F
V
FH
W = Fv = γV

where V = volume of fluid above the curve

Sample Problem
1. Quarter circle shown is 3m long. Determine a) Fh, b)
Fv, c) F, d) Distance of Fh from “L” and e) Distance of Fv
from “L” 4m
water
L
a) Fh = γ hഥ A FH
2m
Fh = 9.81 * 5 * (3 * 2)
F
Fv
Fh = 294.3 KN

b) Fv = γ Vol
Fv = γ At L
At = A1 + A2 Fv = 327.909 KN
At = (4 * 2) + (π * 2 * 2 * (1/4))
At = 11.142 sq.m.
c) F = √ FH 2 + Fv 2

F=√ 294.3 2 + 327.909 2

Fv = 9.81 * 11.142 * 3

F = 440.61 KN

just sum moment at “L”
