Module 8 - Week 2 - 3
Target

The empirical formula shows the kind and proportions of atoms in a

substance in its simplest form. The chemical formula, on the other hand, is the
shorthand way of writing a substance by using chemical symbols and number
subscripts with the exact numbers of atoms.

In your previous lesson, you are done with the naming of compounds given
with their formula and writing formula given their name of the compound.

These modules will provide you with information and activities that will help
you understand Percent composition and Empirical Formula.

After going through these module, you are expected to:

1. Define percent composition and empirical formula.

2. Calculate the empirical formula from the percent composition of a
compound (STEM_GC11PCIf-32)

Packaged foods that you eat typically have nutritional information

provided on the label. The label on a jar of peanut butter reveals that one serving
size is considered to be 32g.

The label also gives the masses of various types of compounds that are present
in each serving. One serving contains 7g of protein, 15g of fat, and 3g of sugar.

By calculating the fraction of protein, fat, or sugar in one serving size of

peanut butter and converting to percent values, we can determine the composition
of peanut butter on a percent by mass basis.

The Percent composition of the Compound

One of the first steps in finding the formula is to determine percent

composition which includes as many percent as there are elements in the
compound. For example, the percent composition of K2CrO4 is 40.3 % K, 26.8% Cr,
and 32.9 % O. These percent must add up to 100%

In chemistry the relative amount of the elements in a compound are

expressed as the percent composition or the percent by mass of each element in the
compound. So, how is the percent by mass of an element computed?

The percent by mass of an element in a compound is the mass in grams of

the element divided by the mass in grams of the compound multiplied by 100%.

mass of the element

% mass of the element = 𝑥 100%
mass of compound

Here are the steps in calculating the percent composition:

Step 1: Calculate the molar mass of the compound.

Example: Calculate the molar mass of H2O
Element Number of atom/s mass (See Periodic Table) MM
H 2 1.01 g/mol 2.02 g
O 1 16.0 g/mol 16.0 g
The molar mass of water is 18.02 grams ( 2.02g + 16.0g)

3
Step 2: Divide the molar mass of each element by the molar mass of the
compound and multiply by 100%
Example:
2.02 𝑔 16.0 𝑔
% of H = x 100 % of O = x 100
18.02 𝑔 18.02 𝑔

= 11.2 % = 88.8 %

Sample Problems:

Discover

An Empirical formula is the chemical formula of a compound that gives the

proportions (ratios) of the elements present in the compound but not the actual
numbers or arrangement of atoms.

This would be the lowest whole number ratio of the elements in the compound.

From the percent composition data, we can calculate the empirical formula of
the compound. For example, the empirical formula of water is H2O. The subscripts
indicate that the ratio of hydrogen to oxygen in this molecule is two to one often
written as 2:1.

To find the empirical formula of a compound, the chemist measures the

percentage by mass of each element in the compound. From the percentage of each
element in the compound, the chemist then determines;

1. The number of moles of atoms of each element in 100g of the compound

and;
2. The ratio of the moles of atoms

A simple rhyme can be used to remember the process:

Percent to Mass
Mass to Mole
Divide by Small
Multiply 'til Whole
For example:
1. Determine the empirical formula of a compound whose percentage
composition is 50.05 % S and 49.95% O.
Solution:
Step 1: Percent to Mass
If we have 100g of the compound, 50.05 g would be sulfur and
49.95g would be Oxygen

14
Step 2: Mass to Mole
All we have to do is convert these masses to moles of atoms

1 mol of S atom
50.05 g of S 𝑥 = 1.56 mol of S atoms
32.1 g S

1 mol of O atom
49.95 g of O 𝑥 = 3.12 mol of O atoms
16.0 g O

Step 3: Divide by Small

Divide each mole value by the smallest number of moles
calculated.

1.56
𝑆: =1
1.56
The empirical formula is

3.12 SO2
𝑂: =2
1.56

The name of the compound is sulfur dioxide

Since the lowest possible ratio is a whole number we will stop at step 3.

2. Find the empirical formula for the substance with composition 52.9% Al
and 47.1 % O.

Step 1: Percent to Mass

Assume a 100.0-gram sample of the substance
52.9 g of Al, 47.1 g of O in 100.0 g sample

Step 2: Mass to Mole

All we have to do is convert these masses to moles of atoms
1 mol of S atom
52.9 g of Al 𝑥 = 1.96 mol of Al atoms
27.0 g Al

1 mol of S atom
47.1 g of O 𝑥 = 2.94 mol of O atoms
16.0 g O

15
Step 3: Divide by Small
Divide each mole value by the smallest number of moles
calculated.
1.96
𝐴𝑙: = 1
1.96

2.94
𝑂: = 1.50
1.56

Step 4: Multiply ‘til Whole

Incase division by the smallest number does not lead

directly to a whole-number ratio, but multiplication of each element by 2
gives a 2:3 ratio

The empirical formula is Al2O3

Careers in Chemistry

Chemists play a vital role in developing ne compounds for a variety of

uses. For instance, synthetic chemists make a new compound for industrial,
pharmaceutical, and home users. When chemists synthesize or discover a new
compound, the compound is analyzed quantitatively to determine its percent
composition.

These new compounds can include new medicines, personal-care

products, and cleaning materials. The new compounds are then analyzed by
analytical chemists, who give experimental data on their composition and
chemical formula.

Discover

When a chemist synthesizes or discover a new compound, the compound is

analyzed quantitively to determine its percent composition.

From the compound’s percent composition, the empirical formula is then

determined. An empirical formula consists of the symbol of all the elements present
in the compound.

On the other hand, the molecular formula gives the actual number of each
kind of atom present in a molecule of the compound.

The constituent elements are represented by their chemical symbols, and the
number of atoms of each element present in each molecule is shown as a subscript
following that element’s symbol.

For example:

• The molecular formula for glucose is C 6H12O6. The molecular formula

indicates the exact number of atoms in the molecule.
• The empirical formula expresses the smallest whole number ratio of the
atoms in the element. In this case, the empirical formula of glucose is CH 2O.
To convert between empirical and molecular formulas, the empirical formula can
be multiplied by a whole number to reach the molecular formula. In this case, the
empirical formula would be multiplied by 6 to get to the molecular formula.
• The compound dichlorine hexoxide has an empirical formula ClO3 and the
molecular formula Cl2O6
• The compound hydrogen peroxide has the empirical formula HO and the
molecular formula H2O2
Another example, hydrogen peroxide has the molecular formula H 2O2, as
shown by the subscripts in the chemical formula, are both 2. The lowest ratio,
however, of hydrogen to oxygen in hydrogen peroxide is 1:1.

Therefore, the empirical formula of hydrogen peroxide is HO.

1 mol of H atom
6.16 g of H 𝑥 = 6.10 mol of H
1.01 g H

1 mol of N atom
9.52 g of N 𝑥 = 0.68 mol of N
14.0 g N

1 mol of O atom
27.18 g of O 𝑥 = 1.70 mol of O
16.0 g O

Step 3: Divide by Small

Divide each mole value by the smallest number of moles
calculated.
4.76
𝐶: = 7
0.68

6.10
𝐻: = 8.97 ≈ 9
0.68

0.68
𝑁: = 1
0.68

1.70
𝑂: = 2.5
0.68

25
Step 4: Multiply ‘til Whole

If the number is too far to round (x.1 ~ x.9), then multiply each
solution by the same factor to get the lowest whole number multiple.

4.76
𝐶: = 7 x 2 = 14
0.68

6.10
𝐻: = 8.97 ≈ 9 x 2 = 18
0.68

0.68
𝑁: = 1x2= 2
0.68

1.70
𝑂: = 2.5 x 2 = 5
0.68

(a) The empirical formula is C14 H18 N2 O5

(b) find the molecular formula by finding the mass of the empirical
formula and setting up a ratio:

C14 H18 N2 O5 = 14(12.0 g) +18(1.01g) +2(14.0g) +5(16.0g)

= 294 g/mol

molar mass
empirical mass

294.30 g/mol
=1
294 g/mol

So, the molecular formula is the same as the empirical formula

C14 H18 N2 O5

2. What is the molecular formula of a compound with a molar mass of

60.0 g/mol and an empirical formula of CH4N?

Step 1: Calculate the molar mass of CH4N

Molar mass of CH4N = 12.0g + 4 (1.01 g) + 14.0 g = 30.0 g/mol

26
Step 2: Divide the given molar mass by the empirical formula mass to
determine n.

Solving for n
molar mass
n=
empirical mass

60.0g/mol
n= =2
30.0 g/mol

Step 3: Multiply the value of n in the subscript in the empirical formula

to determine the actual subscripts in the molecular formula.

C H4 N x 2 = C2 H8 N2
