RESEARCH TITLE:
The Use of Project EMBRACE Program in Enhancing Students' Reading Comprehension
Skills

BRIEF BACKGROUND/RATIONALE:

Reading is prominent aspects in written communications which are commonly used as

formal communication, especially for students at a higher level of education (Ayu, M., 2021).
Reading influences students’ achievement in learning English. In language teaching, reading is
usually taught interactively in the classroom to engage students’ participation (Ayu, Diem and
Viyanti, 2017). Reading intervention programs effectively improve reading skills for students
with reading disabilities or who struggle with reading (Nixon, 2023).
According to Seymour (2017) reading comprehension refers to the ability to process
information that appears in texts in order to develop meaning. Good reading comprehension is a
prerequisite for successful learning. Reading skills underlies all forms of academic activity and
offer an individual opportunity beyond school (Ocampo, 2018). Studies have shown that
competent reading leads to successful academic performance (Oakhill et al., 2014; Pourhosein et
al., 2016; Kaushik & Lipton, 2018; and Elleman & Oslund, 2019). Learners who are good
readers tend to be academically superior in the classroom. However, many Filipino learners have
poor reading comprehension and face significant challenges when reading (Gunobgunob, 2019).
Reading strategies is believed to improve students’ academic achievement (Rasinksi,
2019; Suprajit, 2019). According to the existing literature, although the relationship between
reading strategy use and reading comprehension ability of students and the relationship between
perceived reading self-efficacy and reading comprehension ability were studied in the context of
EFL and ESL, to the best of the researcher’s knowledge, there is still a dearth of studies on the
association between reading strategy use and the reading comprehension ability of students and
their reading self-efficacy and reading comprehension ability. The present study is therefore an
attempt to contribute to the existing literature on teaching students to read in English as a foreign
language. Developing and implementing effective reading strategies require a significant amount
of time, effort, and financial support. Various reading strategies could be implemented in the
classroom to assist students in reading processes. In Medina et al.’s study, teachers were taught
how to explicitly teach reading comprehension strategies, and they integrated these strategies
during teaching which improved their learners’ reading behavior.
Elevating Mastery to Boost Reading Ability and Comprehension Efficiency
(EMBRACE) is a project aimed at addressing the challenges faced by learners in reading
comprehension. By implementing innovative strategies and tailored interventions, EMBRACE
seeks to enhance students' reading skills and comprehension efficiency. The project EMBRACE
program aims to enhance students' understanding and interpretation of texts. Using innovative
techniques and strategies could help students develop critical thinking skills, improve vocabulary
and language comprehension, and ultimately become more effective readers. This program seeks
to empower students to confidently engage with various types of texts and extract meaning from
them.
The information given above shows a detailed overview about the relationship between
reading strategy use, and reading comprehension ability among students learning English as a
foreign language (EFL). It recognizes the importance of reading in academic achievement and
the challenges many Filipino learners face in reading comprehension. Drawing from existing
literature, the study aims to address the gap in research regarding the association between
reading strategy use, reading self-efficacy, and reading comprehension ability specifically within
the context of EFL learning. It seeks to contribute valuable insights to the existing body of
knowledge on teaching English reading skills to non-native speakers.

The study proposes to explore the effectiveness of various reading strategies in improving
students' reading comprehension skills and enhancing their perceived self-efficacy in reading. It
acknowledges the resource-intensive nature of developing and implementing effective reading
strategies and aims to provide practical recommendations for educators.
Furthermore, the study aligns with the goals of Project EMBRACE, which endeavors to
address the challenges faced by learners in reading comprehension by implementing innovative
strategies and providing professional development opportunities for teachers.
Moreover, this study aims to investigate the efficacy of the project EMBRACE program.
By understanding these, the researchers aspire to contribute valuable insights to the existing body
of knowledge and field of education.
Overall, this study seeks to advance our understanding of effective approaches to
teaching reading in English as a foreign language and contribute to the improvement of reading
skills and academic success among EFL learners.

RESEARCH OBEJECTIVES/ STATEMENTS OF PROBLEMS:

General: This study aims to investigate the efficacy of Project Embrace Program to the
students.
Specific:
1. What impact does the Project EMBRACE program have on students' reading comprehension
skills?
2. How do students' attitudes towards reading change after participating in the Project
EMBRACE program?
3. How effective Project Embrace Program in enhancing students' reading comprehension
skills?

RESEARCH DESIGN:
To attain the objective of the study which is to investigate the efficacy of Project
Embrace Program to the students. The researchers use Qualitative Research.
Qualitative Research is a type of research that explores and provides deeper insights into
real-world problems. Instead of collecting numerical data points or intervene or introduce
treatments just like in quantitative research, qualitative research helps generate hypotheses as
well as further investigate and understand quantitative data (Brannan, 2022).
The researchers of the study used survey. A survey is a research technique used to collect
data from a predetermined sample of respondents in order to gain information and insights on a
variety of topics of interest (Anand, 2022).
The researchers will also conduct a semi-structured interview. Semi-structured interview
is often open-ended, allowing for flexibility. Asking set questions in a set order allows for easy
comparison between respondents, but it can be limiting. Having less structure can help you see
patterns, while still allowing for comparisons between respondents (George, 2022).
SIGNIFICANCE:
This research aims to give full understanding on the efficacy of the Project Embrace
Program. The research study would be beneficial for the following:

To the Students. The study's findings can directly impact students by potentially improving
their reading comprehension skills. This can lead to better academic performance, increased
confidence in reading, and a more positive attitude towards learning.

To the Teachers. Understanding the efficacy of the Project EMBRACE program can help
teachers enhance their teaching strategies and improve student outcomes. It can provide them
with evidence-based practices that they can implement in their classrooms to better support
students' reading comprehension development.

To the School Administrators. School administrators can benefit from the study's findings by
gaining insights into effective reading comprehension interventions. This can inform decision-
making related to curriculum development, resource allocation, and professional development
for teachers.

To the Future Researchers: The study can serve as a foundation for future research on reading
comprehension interventions. It can guide researchers in designing studies to further investigate
the effectiveness of the Project EMBRACE program or other similar interventions, leading to
continuous improvement in educational practices.

To the Researchers. For researchers conducting the study, the significance lies in contributing
to the body of knowledge on reading comprehension interventions. Their findings can inform
educational policy and practice, potentially leading to widespread improvements in reading
comprehension outcomes for students.
