1. Given is the strain rate tensor, determine the corresponding velocity field in the spatial description
 tx 
te 0 0
d(x, t) =  0 0 tey + 1
y
0 te + 1 0

for x= 0, w0 = [t − 1, 0, 0]T and the velocity vector at origin v 0 = [t, 0, t]T for ∀ t is satisfied.
2. A tetrahedron shown in the figure below is subjected to a uniform deformation (F= F(t)), with
the following consequences:

(i) Points A,B,O do not move.

(ii) The volume of the solid becomes p times its initial volume.

(iii) The length of segment AC becomes p/ 2 times its initial length.

(iv) The final angle AOC becomes 45◦ .

Then,

(i) Why the infinitesimal strain theory cannot be used here? Justify your answer.

(ii) Determine the deformation gradient tensor, the possible values of p and the displacement field
in its material and spatial forms.

(iii) Draw the deformed solid.

3. For the material strain tensor  

0 tetX 0
E = tetX 0 0 
0 0 tetY
Determine the length of the line segment at time t=1, which at time t=0 (reference configuration)
is a straight joining points (1,1,1) and (2,2,2). 4. Considering that there is no displacement at the
origin, for each of the following strain systems, find the associated displacement components that
represent pure deformation.

(i) e12 = e22 = − νρg

E
(l − x3 ), e33 = ρg
E
(l − x3 ), e11 = e13 = e23 = 0
νM M
(ii) e11 = e22 = x,
EI 1
e33 = − EI x1 , e12 = e23 = e31 = 0.

[E] =  x23 0 −x2 

Find the stress vector at the point P (1, 0, −1) on the surface x22 + x23 = x1 .
