Introduction

According to P Tottot 2021, people carry and develop the two most important skills: reading and

writing. Learning these skills helps you succeed in school. Daily life, particularly for students.

The solid foundation for reading and writing is deeply engaged with both. Students and teachers

Learners' ability to read and write improves as they progress up the educational ladder. This

emphasizes the importance of basic literacy in individuals.

J Learn Disabil 2014; 47:374 stated that reading difficulty is defined from a normative

perspective (ie, how a child performs in reading compared with peers or educational

expectations). Reading difficulty has a number of causes, one of which is a reading disability.

Difficulties with fluent word reading can be caused by a variety of factors. Automatic word

recognition issues can contribute to fluency issues, which in turn frequently lead to

comprehension issues. Because the attention required for effortful reading diverts resources away

from comprehension, fluent reading is required for comprehension (Perfetti, 1985).

Osborne, P (2010), for each difficulty, I will discuss the symptoms and then list possible

solutions. Losing your place, you can lose track of what word you are on at any point, or you can

lose track of what line you are on when moving from one line to the next. Losing your place

wastes time and can inhibit your comprehension. Losing your focus, instead of paying attention

to the text, you are thinking about what you are going to do later, what some friend said, or why

you have to take the stupid SAT. Not getting the point, even though the words and sentences

may make sense, you may not be able to put them together to get the meaning of the passage.

Forgetting what you have read, you still need to recall the main ideas of the passages. If you

come to the end of the passage and cannot recall what it was about, you need to improve your

retention.

Smith, 1995, p.23 stated that reading is "an interactive process in which the reader's prior

knowledge of the world interacts with the message conveyed by the text, either directly or
3

indirectly". Reading is a process. As such, it has various stages (before-, during-, and after-

reading) at which different tasks need to be performed.

HA Lamas, 2015 cited that the school performance study of students is important because of its

relevance and one of the major points of contention in educational research is complexity and it

has received special attention in recent decades.

Reading efficiency relies on rapid and automatic tasks of word recognition, retrieval and

application of proper world knowledge (Lin, 2008, 2009). As Grabe (2002) pointed out that most

reading curricula in school did not provide L2 learners sufficient time to develop their reading

skills.

Noor (2010) and Pretorius (2002) noted that reading skills is a crucial skill in any academic or

higher learning environment that requires students to connect and digest ideas from books. He

also emphasized that the number of first-year language learners attending higher education

institutions is not prepared because of the reading demands and numerous challenges. As a

result, academic success is dependent on students' knowledge of and use of reading strategies.

Reading is a great method of understanding the messages of text or passages involving the

development of comprehension ability, writing style, vocabulary, spelling, and grammar

(Krashen, 2014). Linse and Nunan (2005) define reading as a set of abilities that includes

decoding, making sense and also delivering the meaning of words from a printed book or written

text. In order to begin reading, learners need to be able to understand each symbol printed in the

written text and decode it as the way they comprehend what they read.

Novotny (2011) stated that high school students are requiring reading many materials and

understand them. She also asserted a problem that high school students in America are having

less ability in comprehending text rather than languages.

The repetition of reading activity is called reading habit. Issa et al. (2012) explained then that

reading habit is an activity of reading requiring permanent and continuity of practice and

becoming a part of someone’s life. Reading habit can also be defined as intentional activity
4

which is arranged consistently in order to gain knowledge related to the academic achievement

(Acheaw and Larson, 2014).

A study by Acheaw and Larson (2014) claimed the main problem of what learners are facing

now is that the lack of reading interest. They stated that it is not dealing with the inability

students of reading but the interest itself. As time goes by, students tend to play their gadget

rather than read a book. Palani (2012) also asserted that the existence of media technology

development is becoming the main problem of why learners are not interest into reading such as

books, magazines, journals, or newspaper anymore.

Mahyar (2012) has conducted study which reveals the influence of reading habit and the

students’ writing skill. This previous study revealed that the student with good reading habit

shows good as well in their writing production.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The primary aim of this study is to identify the effect of reading difficulties on the academic

performance of the HUMMS students. This study aimed to answer the following questions:

1.) Does reading difficulties of a student affect their lifestyle?

2.) What is the importance of the reding difficulties on the academic performance of the

student?

SCOPE AND DELIMINATION

The study was conducted within the area of Magalang Christian Ecumenical School, Inc. among

all humanities and social sciences students. The study is focused on reading difficulties on the

academic performance of the humanities and social sciences students. The researchers distributed

questionnaires to the participants to gather data for their study. The main goal of the study is to

discover the reading difficulties and ways how to comprehend the story with ease.
5

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The researchers strongly believe that the findings of this study might benefit the following:

Students. This study will be beneficial for them regarding their way of understanding and help

the humanities and social sciences students with their reading difficulties.

Teachers. This research will help them to come up with effective and meaningful teaching

strategies that will help the students with their reading difficulties. It will also be easier for them

to tackle related topics about research.

Future Researchers. This research will be useful reference for the researchers who would plan

to make any related study about the effect of reading difficulties on academic performance of

humanities and social sciences students.

HYPHOTHESIS

Identifying reading difficulties in the academic performance can help the senior high school

under humanities and social sciences students, because there is a lot related information related

to reading that we can see that can help them. The benefits of learning the reading difficulties are

that you will be able to recognize your lacking and help you improve and get better by learning

and applying the knowledge you will have in this research.

METHODS

Research Design

Purposive sampling was also used by the researchers to compile responses from respondents who

evaluated the elements influencing difficulties. A survey questionnaire was employed in this

study to collect data from the participants. The study’s findings demonstrated how reading issues

impact student’s daily lives and academic achievement. Reading difficulty is a sign of a person’s

inability to use and comprehend written language fluently. Adults are also tormented by it in

addition to youngster.

Respondents

The respondents of this study were HUMSS students of Magalang Christian Ecumenical School,

Inc. there were 150 respondents, who were directly involved in answering the survey

questionnaires and they randomly picked 20 students on every section. If the estimated

respondents are not met, we will have to ask permission from the admin to give us permit that

allows us to conduct a survey on another school with the same strand.

Instrument

This research utilized the quantitative research methodology. The instrument that researchers

used in collecting data was questionnaires. The questionnaires contained survey questions that

were related on the Reading Difficulties on the academic performance of the senior high school

under humanities and social sciences students. The researchers chose to give out survey

questionnaires to determine the performance of the respondents.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers sought the necessary procedures in conducting this study.

 They seek approval from the admin of Magalang Christian Ecumenical School, Inc. for

the conduct of this study.

 They will seek approval from the advisers and the subject teachers of the students of the

Magalang Christian Ecumenical School, Inc. for the conduct of this study.

 The researchers will provide information about the nature of the study and the survey

questionnaire will be given to the respondent.
