OBJECT: To study the running and reversing of three phase induction motor.
THEORY: Induction motors consist of two main parts stator and rotor. These are separated by
uniform air gap the stator is built of sheet steel lamination of 0.4 mm to 0.5mm thickness insulated
from each other by varnish coating. Stator lamination is assembled in a steel yoke and slots are
pushed out on inner periphery. Semi enclosed slots are generally used for the stator because of
reduced exciting current and increase power factor. The rotor core is built up of steel lamination of
larger thickness because of very low frequency of rotor flux. Running of three phase induction motor
When a three-phase supply is fed to the stator winding of three-phase induction motor, a
magnetic field of constant amplitude is produced in the stator, which rotates at a constant speed. The
lines of force of stator field cut the rotor conductor an alternating emf is induced in the rotor
conductor because of relative speed between field and rotor conductors. As rotor windings are short
circuited, a current is circulating in rotor bars. The interaction of stator magnetic field and rotor
current produce a torque, which tries rotate the rotor in the direction of rotating flux.
Reversing of three phase induction motor By interchanging the phase sequence of any
two phase the direction of rotating flux will be reversed. As result the torque produce
due to interaction of rotor current and stator magnetic field will be in the reversed
direction. As the result the rotor rotates in the reverse direction
