Chapter 18: SENTENCE KINDS: BASED ON MEANING

TRANSFORMATION OF SENTENCE

 ASSERTIVE TO INTERROGATIVE :

 Rule 1: If the sentence is in the affirmative you have to change it into negative
interrogative. If it is in negative then you have to change it into bare interrogative.
Example:
Assertive: He was very gentle.
Interrogative: Was not he very gentle?
Affirmative: He is not a good person.
Interrogative: Is he a good person?

 Rule 2: No auxiliary verb in sentence →→ Change it by using →→ Do/does/did Or

Don't/doesn't/didn't.
Example:
Assertive: He plays Football.
Interrogative: Does he play football?
Assertive: They did not play football yesterday.
Interrogative: Did they play football yesterday?

 Rule3: Never → Replaced by → Ever.

Example:
Assertive: I never drink tea.
Interrogative: Do I ever drink tea?

 Rule 4: Everybody/everyone/ All → Replaced by → Who + Don't/ Doesn't/ Didn't

Example:
Assertive: Everybody wishes to be happy.
Interrogative: Who doesn't wish to be happy?

 Rule 5: Every + noun → Replaced by → Is there any + noun+ Who don't/doesn't/didn't.

Example:
Assertive: Every man wishes to be happy.
Interrogative: Is there any man who doesn't wish to be happy?

 Rule 6: No body/ no one / None → Replaced by → Who.

Example:
Assertive: Nobody could count my love for you.
Interrogative: Who could ever count my love for you?

 Rule 7: There is no → Replaced by → Is there any/ Who(person)/ What( thing).

Example:
Assertive: There is no use of this law.
Interrogative: What is the use of this law?
Assertive: There is no man happier than Jamil.
Interrogative: Who is happier than Jamil?

 Rule 8: It is no → Replaced by → Is there any/Why.

Example:
Assertive: It is no use of taking unfair means in the exam.
Interrogative: Why take unfair means in the exam?
Or,
Is there any use of this law?

 Rule 9: It does not matter → Replaced by → what though/ Does it matter.

Example:
Assertive: It does not matter if you fail in the exam.
Interrogative: What though if you fail in the exam?

 INTERROGATIVE TO ASSERTIVE:

 While transforming interrogative sentences into assertive sentences, we add 'not' if the

interrogative sentence is in the affirmative.

Example:

Interrogative: Is he not a bright student?

Assertive: He is a bright student.

 ASSERTIVE TO EXCLAMATORY:

 Rule 1: What /how + adjective + subject + verb + rest of the sentence +’!’
Note: If there is ‘a’ before adjective-- then it becomes ‘what a’, if not then it starts with
‘how’.
Example:
Assertive - It is a very beautiful place.
Exclamatory – What a beautiful place it is!
Assertive – The man is very honest.
Exclamatory – How honest the man is!

 Rule 2: If there is a wish/desire in assertive sentence then in exclamatory sentence it

starts with If/Had/ Oh that.
Example:
Assertive – I wish I had the wings of a bird.
Exclamatory – Had I the wings of bird!
Or,

If I had the wings of a bird!

Assertive – I wish I were a king.

Exclamatory – If I were a king!

Assertive – I desire I were young again.

Exclamatory – Oh that I were young again!

 EXCLAMATORY TO ASSERTIVE:

 Rule 1: Subject+ verb + a/an + very/great + adjective + rest of the sentence

Example:

Exclamatory – What a nice flower it is!

Assertive – It is a very nice flower.

Exclamatory – What a genius student he is!

Assertive – He is a very genius student.

 Rule 2: In case of ‘Hurrah’ in exclamatory sentence, change it to – ‘It is matter of joy+

that'

Example:
Exclamatory – Hurrah! We have won the game.

Assertive – It is a matter of joy that we have won the game.

Exclamatory – hurrah! I got the first prize.

Assertive – It is a matter of joy that I have got the first prize.

 Rule 3: In case of ‘If/Would that/ O that’ in exclamatory sentence, the assertive sentence

starts with ‘I wish’

Example:
Exclamatory – If I were a player!

Assertive – I wish I were a player.

Exclamatory - Would that I could be a player!

Assertive – I wish I could be a player.

Exclamatory – O that you were a cricketer!

Assertive – I wish you were a cricketer.

 Rule 4: In case of ‘Had’ in exclamatory sentence--Subject + wish + again subject + had +

rest of the sentence

Example:

Exclamatory – Had I the pairs of birds!

Assertive – I wish I had the pairs of birds.

Exclamatory – Had I been a king!

Assertive – I wish I had been a king.

 Rule 5: ‘Alas’ changes into ‘It is a matter of sorrow’

Example:

Exclamatory – Alas! We lost the game!

Assertive – It is a matter of sorrow that we lost the game.

Exclamatory – Alas! He failed in the examination!

Assertive – It is a matter of sorrow that he failed in the examination.

 AFFIRMATIVE TO NEGETIVE:
 While transforming an affirmative sentence into negative sentence, use an antonym for

the adjective and add a negative word so that the meaning of the sentence does not

change.

Note: If there is ‘always’ in an affirmative sentence, never will be used for ‘ever/always’

in negative sentence and verb /adjective/adverb will be opposite meaning.

Example:

Affirmative: He was always punctual.

Negative: He was never late.
