5 Answer question numbers 5 (a) – 5 (d) based on your understanding of the following
paragraph and the related studied concepts.

In any discussion about climate change, renewable energy usually tops the list of changes
the world can implement to stave off the worst effects of rising temperatures. That is
because renewable energy sources such as solar and wind do not emit carbon dioxide and
other greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming. The trouble with renewable
power sources is that they might not be produced at the time when most needed—during
periods of peak energy demand. The creation of energy from such sources also depends on
environmental conditions. Wind energy is harnessed when it is windy, and solar energy
creation is dependent on sunlight. Such challenges require a storage solution such as
lithium-ion batteries. They enable renewable energy generation to be stored until required.
The 2019 Nobel prize for chemistry was awarded for the development of lithium batteries.
Solar panels are used to convert solar energy to electrical energy. Efficiency of solar cells
also have been low. Scientists have now developed solar cells that is capable of converting

direct sunlight into electricity with 44.5 percent efficiency — making it, potentially, the most
efficient solar cell in the world. Current solar technology only converts electricity with a
maximum efficiency of about 25 percent. Solar cell efficiency refers to the portion of energy
in the form of sunlight that can be converted into electricity by the solar cell.

Many rural areas in India have no access to electricity, and the largest of these are
often the rural poor and their school-going children. IIT Bombay under a project distributed
solar study lamps, which will enhance schoolchildren’s daily night studies. The solar lamps
have solar panels and lithium ion batteries. Most schoolchildren in remote rural
communities without electric light find it difficult to compete with their peers who can read
more than three hours per night because of the availability of electricity. Partially using
renewable sources of energy can help homes to reduce their energy consumption and hence
reduce their expenses.
