III. CONTENT NOTES

An Operating System (OS) is an interface between a computer user and

computer hardware. It is a software which performs all the basic tasks like file
management, memory management, process management, handling input and
output, and controlling peripheral devices such as disk drives and printers.

A device driver when taken in the context of computer technology simply

refers to a program (software) normally developed by the hardware manufacturer to
allow it to interact with the computer system. This driver program is used by the
different components and applications in the machine to execute a specific task like
printing, DVD reading and writing, or connecting to the Internet, among others.
Device drivers are generally specific to the underlying Operating System and
hardware dependent which means that the correct version must be installed to
ensure proper operation of the supported device. In most cases, a new hardware is
accompanied with its own device driver and in other instances the manufacturer
provides a downloadable (often updated version from their own website).

Common procedures in installing device’s driver

1. Launch your web browser and go to the website of the manufacturer of your
hardware or use any search engine like google or yahoo to search for the
appropriate device driver.
2. Save the file to a folder in your hard drive. Upon completion of the download
process simply run the device driver to install it.
3. To install a device driver from the accompanying CD media, simply insert it
into the CD or DVD driver of your machine.
4. An installation program will be launched which will initiate the process. Simply
follow the prompts that will appear on the screen to complete the setting up of
the appropriate device driver. The installation program will also terminate
automatically once the process is completed.
5. Device drivers may also be distributed using removable storage like flash
drives. These types usually represent driver updates to take advantage of
functions in newer Operating System platforms. Insert the flash drive in the
appropriate port.
6. If the installation does not begin automatically, simply open the explorer
program and navigate to the appropriate driver. Locate the executable file
which will launch the device application.
7. Make sure to choose the correct version which corresponds to your Operating
System. Follow the onscreen prompts until the process is completed.
8. In all device driver installation procedures, make sure to scan the files with
your protection software before beginning the process. Once the device driver
has been successfully installed into the system, reboot the machine to ensure
all changes are reflected in the Operating System.

Installing driver/device driver
A. Via installation Disc
• (Motherboard ECS 865G-M8 Insyde BIOS)
• Operating System: Windows OS
• Motherboard Manual
• Motherboard Driver/Installation Disc (supports Motherboard ECS
865G-M8 Insyde BIOS)
• Computer with Optical Disc Drive (ODD)

Cautions:
• Never try to install all software that is not specified for use with your
device e.g. Motherboard ECS 865G-M8 Inside BIOS
• if the auto-install CD-ROM does not work on your system, you can still
install drivers through the file manager for your OS (for example,
windows explorer)
• Before installing any software, always inspect the folder for files named
README.TXT, INSTALL.TXT, or something similar. These files may
contain important information that is not included in this SLK.

When you insert the CD-ROM disc in the CD-ROM drive, the autorun feature will
automatically bring up the install screen. The screen has three buttons on it, Setup,
Browse CD and Exit

Running Setup
1. Click Setup. The installation program begins
2. Click Next. The following screen appears.
3. Check the box next to the items you want to install. The default
options are recommended.
4. Click Next run in the Installation Wizard. An item installation screen
appears

3
B. Via Network
• Workstations
• Prepared/saved driver in a computer connected to an active network
(Motherboard ECS 865G -M8 Insyde BIOS)
• Configured /Active LAN network
Procedures:
1. Share the directory that contains driver in a network/shared
network.
2. Determine the IP address or hostname
Example: Go the start button or press windows button on your
keyboard then press R >type “\\192.168.1.1 >then press enter
then you will find the shared folder on a network. Make it sure that
you remember the shared folder name.
3. Enter to your shared folder and press .exe setup file. After this step
you can follow the preceding steps discussed on “via Installation
Disc”.

C. Via Portable Device (Flash Drive)

• computer with enabled USB ports
• portable device (e.g. flash drive) that contains device driver
(Motherboard ECS 865G-M8 Insyde BIOS)
• Welcome diversions. The most rewarding adventures often start with
an unexpected detour. Perhaps that distraction will guide you
onward.
Procedures:
1. Insert your flash drive
2. Press windows button >My computer>
3. Locate your flash drive in your My Computer /This PC
4. Find the folder that contains the driver
5. Run exe. setup then you can follow the preceding steps discussed
on “a. via installation disc)

4

VI. ADDITIONAL READINGS

More commonly known as a driver, a device driver or hardware driver is a

group of files that enable one or more hardware devices to communicate with the
computer's operating system. Without drivers, the computer would not be able to
send and receive data correctly to hardware devices, such as a printer.

What devices need drivers?

Hardware devices that are unknown by the operating system or that have
features that are unknown by the operating system all require drivers. Below is a list
of hardware devices and peripherals that require drivers.
• Card reader
• Controller
• Modem
• Motherboard chipset
• Network card
• Printer
• Scanner
• Sound card
• Tape drive
• USB devices
• Video card

7
What devices may not need drivers
Today's operating systems have a lot of generic drivers that allow hardware to
work at a basic level without needing drivers or software. However, if that device has
features unknown to the operating system, it will not work without drivers. For
example, you could plug any keyboard into a computer and expect it to work.
However, if that keyboard has any special keys or features, they will not work until
the drivers are installed.
• CPU
• Disc drive
• Fan
• Hard drive
• Heat sink
• Joystick
• Keyboard
• Mouse
• Monitor
• Power supply
• RAM
• Speakers
• Thumb drive
• UPS
Note: The operating systems generic driver may not be updated as often as
the drivers from a hardware manufacturer or computer manufacturer.

What happens if a driver is not installed?

If the appropriate driver is not installed, the device may not function properly, if
at all. With some devices, the device may work, but all of its features may not work.
For example, a computer mouse usually works without drivers, but if it has more
buttons than the traditional mouse, those extra buttons will not work until the drivers
are installed.

For Microsoft Windows users, missing drivers may cause a driver conflict or an
error that is shown in the Device Manager. If problems or conflicts are encountered
with drivers, the computer manufacturer or hardware manufacturer releases a driver
update to fix the problems. If updated drivers are available, those drivers need to be
installed to replace the existing driver code.

Can a driver make my computer do more?

Installing a driver only makes the hardware installed in the computer function
properly. If the correct driver is not installed, installing the latest driver for the
hardware can take full advantage of the device. However, you cannot install a driver
for hardware not installed in the computer and expect it to make your computer
faster or more capable. In other words, installing video card drivers for a video card
that's not installed in the computer does not give your computer all the capabilities of
that video card. In this example, you'd need the video card hardware and the video
card drivers to be installed.
